Although vampires are predators superior to humans in folklore and mythology, their millennia-long entanglement has made them a part of human society. This involved billions of dollars, the funding source for Nick Fury's various secret bases under construction, and the maintenance costs for already established bases. Money that couldn't be accounted for through S.H.I.E.L.D.'s books generally came from this source.
