Background / History

Hulk originated from an experimental project led by General Ross, with Bruce Banner becoming the resulting gamma-powered subject. Banner is a nuclear physicist with seven Ph.D.s and had previously reverse-engineered the Super Soldier Serum. 114 136

Before Ross located him, Banner lived as a fugitive, avoiding emotional stimulation because anger could surrender control of his body to Hulk. A prior attempt to capture him in Brazil ended with Ross's elite soldiers being defeated almost immediately. 115

At the University of Virginia, tear gas deployed by Ross's forces triggered Banner's transformation. Hulk protected Betty Ross, carried her out of the computer lab, and fought the soldiers sent to capture him. 116 Major Franski's force lured him into an unpopulated area, restrained him with White Noise Wave Cannons and expanding rubber, but Betty's plea awakened a trace of Banner's consciousness. Hulk broke free, severely injured Franski, destroyed two helicopters, and spared the surviving soldiers at Betty's request. 117 118 119

Banner later sought Samuel Sterns' supposed gamma antidote, hoping to live normally with Betty. The antidote temporarily suppressed Hulk, allowing Ross to capture Banner, but the trap ultimately led to Franski mutating into Abomination. 126 127 Hulk broke through the suppressant to save a falling helicopter carrying Betty and Ross, then fought Abomination on Fifth Avenue while heavily weakened by the antidote. 128

Hulk first cooperated with Tony Stark during the battle against Abomination. Although Hulk's resilience kept him in the fight, Abomination's superior strength, speed, reach, and combat experience repeatedly overwhelmed him. 130 131 After Abomination was defeated, Hulk attacked Regined until Coulson subdued him with White Noise Wave Cannons and a specialized liquefied agent that reverted him to Banner. 135 136

S.H.I.E.L.D. recovered Banner, who awoke from a coma emotionally suppressed by the Bohemian Potion and unable to transform. Wei Xiuming offered him either permanent emotional suppression or the Dual Driver; Banner chose the Driver, which merged his intellect with Hulk's body and produced Doc Green. 138 140

As Doc Green, Banner joined S.H.I.E.L.D. and performed both research and field work, including capturing an artificial vampire and defending a S.H.I.E.L.D. base from intruders. 207 209 He later fought alongside the Avengers during the Chitauri invasion of New York. 241

Appearance

In his original form, Hulk is a towering green monster over two meters tall, with arms as thick as an adult human's waist. His transformation massively expands Banner's musculature and bones, usually bursting ordinary clothing. 116

The original Hulk is driven primarily by rage and has little tactical understanding, relying on brute force, instinct, and escalating anger. He is portrayed as immature due to having existed for less than three years and having spent very little time active. 117 135

Despite his aggression, Hulk retains a protective connection to Betty Ross. Banner's concern for her can surface within Hulk's consciousness, and her pleas have caused him to stop attacking or spare opponents. 116 119

Doc Green is more balanced: Banner's memories and intellect coexist with Hulk's strength and aggression. The fusion leaves Banner more mellow and willing to accept S.H.I.E.L.D. assignments, though he remains wary of manipulation and distrustful of Natasha Romanoff's motives. 140 207 208
