Background / History

Loki was adopted by Odin after being born to Laufey, King of the Frost Giants. Odin's Divine Power concealed Loki's Frost Giant form and allowed him to live as an Asgardian prince, but Loki discovered his origin after touching the Casket of Ancient Winters in Odin's vault. Fearful that exposure would cost him Asgard, Odin's approval, and Frigga's affection, he sought legitimacy through the throne and the destruction of the Frost Giants. 187

He manipulated Thor into invading Jotunheim and arranged the Frost Giants' earlier intrusion into Odin's vault, forcing Odin to expend power and enter Odin's Sleep early. Odin nevertheless named Loki acting God King, giving him Gungnir until Thor regained his honor or Odin awakened. 187

As acting king, Loki allied with Laufey and intended to let the Frost Giants invade Midgard, then use the Bifrost as a planet-destroying weapon against their assembled forces. He expected this manufactured victory to turn him into Asgard's hero, but Heimdall's aid to Sif and the Warriors Three exposed the conspiracy to Thor. 195 196

After Thor returned to Asgard and his scheme failed, Loki fell from the Bifrost into space. Thanos recovered him and used his claim to Asgardian authority as political cover for an attack on Earth, ordering Loki to study magic and the Tesseract. 216 217
