History

Founding and Clan Politics

Konoha stood at the boundary between the Uchiha and Senju ancestral territories along the Naka River. Its founding alliance did not prohibit either clan from withdrawing—a provision Senju Cloud acknowledged when Akira announced the Uchiha’s secession 416 436.

The village’s clans retained substantial private holdings outside Konoha, including farmland, forests, ancestral estates, and secret bases. These properties provided alternatives to remaining within the village and became important when Akira began relocating the Uchiha 416 417.

Suppression of the Uchiha

After the Nine-Tails Incident, suspicion divided both Konoha and the Uchiha. Clan members regarded Shisui’s cooperation with village leadership as betrayal, while Akira identified the upper ranks’ suppression and the deaths of Uchiha experts on outside missions as immediate threats 366 367 374.

By Konoha Year 54, the Uchiha Combat Faction was preparing a coup. Akira rejected the plan: Anbu surveillance had removed the possibility of surprise, and the clan’s approximately 700 ninja could not defeat the much larger village force in a direct confrontation 376 377.

On August 22 of that year, Danzo, Mitokado Homura, and Utatane Koharu proposed cutting the Guard Division’s budget by 40%. Hiruzen settled on 30%; the reduction was subsequently implemented alongside increased opportunities for young Uchiha to enter other departments 381 387.

Akira responded by reorganizing the Guard Division and recruiting civilian assistants. Although this reduced friction with villagers, Hiruzen used rumors about salaried Uchiha avoiding work to prepare further budget cuts and provoke divisions within the clan. Akira then established the Naka River Trading Company to develop Uchiha ancestral property, which the elders viewed as a threat to village unity 392 395 405 416.

Blood Moon and Uchiha Secession

Hiruzen planned to recall loyal border elites under cover of the New Year rotation to support an operation against the Uchiha. The forces available for this secret action came principally from Anbu, Root, and the Sarutobi, Shimura, Utatane, and Mitokado clans rather than the village’s other clans 420.

The operation backfired. Akira’s faction used disguised self-detonating puppets inside the Guard Division building, attacked the four leadership clans’ residential districts, and raided the Hokage archives. Hiruzen subsequently placed Konoha on Level 1 alert and ordered the execution of any Uchiha found 431 432 433 435.

The surviving Hokage administration reported the following ninja losses:

Force Reported losses
Anbu 206 437
Sarutobi Clan 836 437
Shimura Clan 157 in the village, plus 153 in the Kitagawa raid force 437
Utatane Clan 103 437
Mitokado Clan 54 437
Root force sent to Kitagawa City 123, believed annihilated 437
Total 1,632 ninja, including 1,070 of at least Elite Chunin rank 437

Akira publicly challenged Hiruzen over Danzo’s Sharingan and Wood Release arm, his cooperation with the fugitive Orochimaru, and the encirclement of Uchiha territory. He then dissolved the Uchiha–Senju alliance. Senju Cloud accepted the clan’s right to leave, while other clan heads and civilian elites opposed Hiruzen’s demand for an immediate attack on Kitagawa City 436.

The Uchiha withdrew rather than seize the Hokage position. Akira judged that their isolation, hostile relations with other clans, and opposition from Hiruzen’s forces outside the village would make ruling Konoha untenable 437.

Border Pressure and the Kitagawa Standoff

News and released footage of the conflict damaged Konoha’s standing across the Shinobi World. Its border forces entered Level 1 alert, and the village recruited additional civilian and clan ninja. Sunagakure sought to capture more missions, while Iwagakure and Kumogakure prepared for possible war without immediately attacking 439 440.

Jiraiya returned to Konoha, and Tsunade took up a position on the northeastern border. Shikaku persuaded village leaders to postpone another extermination campaign, arguing that further losses would invite intervention from rival villages. Instead, they adopted economic blockade, agricultural attacks, and ambushes intended to weaken Kitagawa 441 442.

By summer of Konoha Year 59, the blockade had failed to destabilize Kitagawa City. Hiruzen again began gathering forces for an assault. Jiraiya and Tsunade temporarily left their border commands, forcing him to redeploy the recalled elites to protect the Land of Fire rather than attack the Uchiha 458.

Assault on Kitagawa City

Hiruzen eventually assembled approximately 1,800 elite troops: a 1,300-strong Legion of the Dead created through Impure World Reincarnation, supplemented by roughly 500 Anbu, Root, and clan elites. His intelligence estimated only 500–600 opponents inside Kitagawa City 460.

Akira broadcast the assault throughout the Shinobi World. Projection devices appeared in Konoha’s streets, where barriers prevented Anbu from destroying them. Initial support for the attack gave way to shock when viewers recognized deceased Konoha ninja among the attackers 461 462.

Kitagawa’s barrier withstood the opening bombardment, and the defenders answered with Chakra Cannons and Susanoo users. Hiruzen also revived Hashirama and Tobirama. After seeing evidence of the concealed conflict, Hashirama declared Hiruzen removed from office and called for negotiations, but the fighting continued. Akira ultimately subdued Hashirama and sealed Tobirama 462 464 465.

The defeat left Konoha demoralized. Following Akira’s declaration of war against the shinobi villages, Daimyo, and nobles, Shikaku began considering surrender or escape 467.

Encirclement and Surrender

The Angkor Legion, Kitagawa Legion, and First Fleet surrounded Konoha with approximately 11,000 personnel and more than twenty airborne warships. Headquarters had only about 4,600 ninja available; even gathering hidden clan forces, retirees, academy students, Anbu, and Root would raise the total to no more than approximately 9,000 468.

Shikaku, Senju Cloud, and Hyuga Hiashi agreed to surrender. Kakashi and other Konoha elites intercepted fleeing remnants of the Sarutobi-aligned clans, Anbu, and Root. Akira then entered the village with Shisui and a 500-strong Flame Army unit without a battle against the occupying force 468 469.

Shikaku initially proposed a merger, hoping Konoha’s troops would be useful against the Flame Gate’s other enemies. Akira countered by revealing approximately 200,000 Jonin-level soldiers and over a million reserves. He demonstrated the basis of that strength by implanting Sage Mecha into Neji, Rock Lee, and Tenten; their performance against Kakashi convinced the representatives that Konoha lacked bargaining power 469 470.

Konoha officially surrendered, ending its existence as one of the Five Great Shinobi Villages 471.

Government and Internal Factions

Konoha’s nominal unity concealed competing political blocs. Hiruzen could not automatically command either the smaller ninja clans or prominent civilian ninja; orders to eliminate the Uchiha would require explanations rather than unconditional obedience 391.

Faction or institution Position within Konoha
Hokage Faction Hiruzen’s power base, strongly supported by his own clan and allied leadership clans 391 420.
Elder Council Homura and Koharu participated in major decisions, including Guard Division funding and action against the Uchiha 381 420.
Danzo Faction / Root A separate coercive network that monitored the Uchiha and forcibly took members from other clans 388 437.
Uchiha Faction Internally split over coup plans, accommodation with Konoha, and Akira’s alternative leadership 378 405.
Hyuga Faction A major clan bloc; became Konoha’s leading noble family after Uchiha withdrawal 436.
Senju Faction Retained influence through branches, intermarriage, academy personnel, and the medical system despite its decline 391.
Ninja Clan Faction Included Ino-Shika-Cho, Inuzuka, and Aburame; did not fully obey the Hokage 391.
Commoner Elite Faction Included influential non-clan-aligned ninja; later provided a support base for Jiraiya 391 458.
  • Anbu — The Hokage’s direct service; its pre-Blood Moon membership exceeded 400, of whom more than 200 were lost in the conflict 436.
  • Guard Division — The Uchiha-associated security organization whose funding and reorganization became central political disputes 381 395.
  • Jonin leadership — Shikaku replaced Homura under the Fourth Hokage, but his authority became largely nominal after Hiruzen’s restoration 391.
  • Re-established Root — Hiruzen rebuilt Root after the Blood Moon losses. The narrative distinguishes its loyalty to Hiruzen personally from Anbu’s service to the Hokage’s office 458.

Military Strength

Period Documented strength Qualification
Before Uchiha secession Approximately 10,000 standing ninja; roughly 20,000 including clan private forces, Anbu, and Root 376 Akira’s assessment when rejecting a coup.
During Flame Gate’s early expansion Around 100 openly acknowledged Elite Jonin; at most 200 including hidden forces 419 Included Anbu, Root, and concealed clan personnel.
Kitagawa assault Approximately 1,800 elite troops 460 Included 1,300 reincarnated ninja of at least Special Jonin rank.
Encirclement of Konoha Approximately 4,600 ninja at headquarters; emergency maximum around 9,000 468 Much of the standing force remained at the borders.
Surrender negotiations Maximum of approximately 300 Jonin, including Special Jonin 471 Insufficient leverage against the Flame Gate’s mass-produced Jonin forces.

Defenses and Strategic Assets

  • Barrier network — Akira destroyed a barrier node during the Blood Moon fighting, contributing to the village’s destruction and disorder 433.
  • Border armies — Required continued deployments against potential attacks from other Great Shinobi Villages 440 458.
  • Nine-Tails Jinchuriki — Naruto was treated as a final trump card during the post-secession crisis 436.
  • Forbidden-technique archives — The Hokage Building held the Scroll of Seals and a ninjutsu database, both taken by Akira 432 471.
  • Clan-held techniques — The Hokage archives did not contain Konoha’s entire inheritance; many families retained their own secret techniques 471.

Geography and Notable Locations

  • Naka River boundary — The Uchiha ancestral lands lay along the upper-middle reaches, and the Senju lands along the lower-middle reaches; Konoha occupied their territorial boundary 416.
  • Southern main gate — Faced the Angkor Legion during the encirclement 468.
  • Hokage Building — Contained leadership offices, conference facilities, and secret archives; later hosted the surrender negotiations 381 432 469.
  • Guard Division headquarters — The focal point of the Blood Moon trap and the attempted suppression of the Uchiha 431 435.
  • Training Ground 8 — Site of the Sage Mecha demonstration against Kakashi 470.
  • Kitagawa Territory — Located northwest of Konoha. Uchiha control disrupted the quickest connection between headquarters and the northwestern border 442.

Incorporation into the Flame Gate

The surrender replaced Konoha’s clan-based political order with Flame Gate citizenship 471.

  • Citizenship — Konoha personnel other than the Sarutobi lineage were to become ordinary Flame Gate citizens 471.
  • Employment — Entry into Flame Gate departments was optional and subject to strict screening 471.
  • Clan abolition — Clan heads, elders, and private clan laws lost legal standing. Families were limited to direct descendants within two or three generations 471.
  • Equal application — The restriction also abolished the Uchiha Clan as a legal institution; the surname remained 471.
  • Research handover — Major and minor clans were required to submit secret-technique materials and cooperate in Bloodline Limit research 471.
  • Redistribution — After integration, screened Konoha ninja were dispersed among the Flame Gate’s controlled areas rather than retained as a unified village force 487.

External Relations

  • Uchiha / Flame Gate — A founding clan became a secessionist power and ultimately absorbed Konoha after defeating Hiruzen’s attack 436 465 471.
  • Sunagakure — Konoha’s nominal ally under a submission treaty following the previous Great Shinobi War; exploited Konoha’s weakness by seeking additional missions 440.
  • Iwagakure — Prepared for war after the Blood Moon but avoided being the first village to attack 440.
  • Kumogakure — Reinforced its forces while weighing intervention; pressure from the Cloud border later constrained Hiruzen’s troop movements 440 458.
  • Kirigakure — Its internal strife initially prevented intervention in Konoha’s crisis. It was later revealed to be under Flame Gate control during the surrender negotiations 441 469.
  • Akatsuki — Viewed Uchiha secession as indirectly weakening Konoha and making the eventual capture of the Nine-Tails easier 439.
