Background / History

Wang Gao was born in the Flower Country of the West Blue and was a distant relative of the pirate Ochoku. At age thirteen, he joined Ochoku's crew as a laborer, eventually becoming a responsible ship leader. In Grand Line Era 1495, Garp defeated him while pursuing Roger, and Wang Gao was imprisoned in Impel Down's Hunger Hell. His bounty before imprisonment was 72 million Belly. 1 2

During his confinement, another soul merged with his own. The merged soul became dominant while retaining Wang Gao's body, memories, Devil Fruit ability, and much of his original identity. This event transformed him from an impulsive pirate into a calculating researcher focused on survival, knowledge, and long-term planning. 2 4 20

After secretly removing his Seastone shackles with a finger bone fashioned into a key, Wang Gao remained inside Impel Down rather than attempting an immediate escape. He used the Chain-Chain Fruit to study genes, created the Drought Algae Vine for food, water, camouflage, and excavation, then escaped his cell through a tunnel while leaving behind a remotely controlled clone as a decoy. 3 5 6

Wang Gao established bases at Level 5.5, Camel Island, and later across multiple regions. He created artificial humans, recruited selected prisoners and allies, infiltrated Impel Down under James Cook's identity, and founded the Human Innovation Alliance.
