Background / History
Danzo trained under Tobirama Senju alongside Torifu Akimichi. He also grew up with Kagami Uchiha and fought beside him for years. That experience gave him a detailed understanding of Kagami’s Sharingan, Fire Release, swordsmanship, and Phantom Body Flicker Technique 193 218.
As Konoha’s intelligence chief, Danzo handles the Third Hokage’s covert internal affairs and commands Root. He describes himself as the shadow supporting Hiruzen’s leadership, but also covets the Hokage position. When the possible recovery of Tobirama’s corpse becomes a political issue, he is identified as someone who would exploit Hiruzen’s mishandling of it to challenge his authority 40 169 181.
Appearance
Danzo is depicted as an upright, middle-aged man still in his physical prime, rather than the frail elder remembered from the original timeline 168.
- Clothing: Wears a black robe when arriving with his army 165.
- Eye: Already lacks one eye before his private meeting with Gen; the cause is not given 168.
- Injury: Later loses an arm to the Fourth Raikage’s hand-blade attack 217 219.
- Escort: Frequently appears surrounded by Root operatives, including during frontline combat 165 211.
Personality
Danzo combines genuine loyalty to Konoha with an inflated sense of his own importance. He is willing to sacrifice himself, but believes his death should occur only after he has become Hokage and can make a historically significant sacrifice like Tobirama’s. He likewise accepts the destruction of his subordinates if their deaths produce sufficient value 191.
His ambition shapes both military and political decisions. He seeks conspicuous battlefield achievements to offset his unpopular covert activities, preserve his authority, and strengthen his claim to the Hokage position. Despite presenting himself as indispensable to Konoha, he remains intensely cautious about his own safety and uses Root elites as protection 166 211.
Danzo is manipulative but not incompetent. He uses sentimental gifts, promises of succession, intelligence, and appeals to village duty to influence others. His narrow-mindedness and willingness to undermine allies make him exploitable: Orochimaru successfully turns his hunger for military credit into a trap and later uses his fear of physical decline to secure research support 169 174 180 220.
Abilities & Skills
Wind Release
Danzo’s masterful Wind Release is a principal basis of his Kage-level strength. Its cutting power is among the few conventional attacks capable of threatening the Third Raikage’s exceptionally durable body 168 193.
- Vacuum Wave: Used during his coordinated fight with Gen 193.
- Wind blades and bullets: Provide ranged pressure while Gen occupies the enemy at close range 193 212.
- Vacuum Great Sphere: Used to bombard the Third Raikage after Danzo retreats from close combat 214.
- Wind-enhanced shuriken: Combined with Gen’s precisely controlled Amaterasu to create attacks that threaten the Raikage despite his durability 214 215.
- Limitation: Against the Third Raikage alone, Danzo is physically outmatched and unlikely to obtain a safe opportunity to exploit his offensive power 193.
Swordsmanship and Mobility
Danzo inherited refined Konoha Style Swordsmanship from Tobirama. Alongside Wind Release, it allows him to fight at Kage level without the transplanted powers associated with his original-timeline elderly counterpart 168.
- Carries and draws a sword-cane when launching the fortress assault 192.
- Uses the Body Flicker Technique to depart with his Root escorts 169.
- Performs hand seals rapidly enough to nearly leave afterimages during his fight with the Third Raikage 214.
Summoning: Baku
Danzo summons Baku as an emergency defense against the Third Raikage’s Hell Stab: One-Finger Nukite 214.
- Its enormous suction and body temporarily obstruct the Raikage and disrupt his Lightning Release Armor 214.
- Baku is destroyed during the exchange, forcing Danzo to retreat and resume ranged attacks 214.
Intelligence and Covert Operations
As intelligence chief and Root leader, Danzo can draw on extensive information about individuals and military affairs inside and outside Konoha 181.
- Root’s intelligence network spans the Five Great Nations and includes deeply placed agents in Kumogakure 181.
- Obtains advance warning that Kumogakure intends to deploy the Six Paths Tools 181.
- Plans to investigate weaknesses among Gen’s associates and discreetly recruit his subordinates 181.
- Temporarily places Root personnel, intelligence assets, and roughly two thousand troops under Orochimaru’s command to enable a decisive offensive 181 182.
Battlefield Coordination
Danzo’s history with Kagami makes him unusually compatible with Gen’s inherited fighting style. In their first joint engagement, Gen’s frontline pressure creates openings for Danzo’s ranged Wind Release 193.
- Coordinates with Gen to inflict shallow wounds on the Third Raikage’s previously unbreached defense 214.
- Supports Gen while the latter bears the brunt of the Raikage’s close-range attacks 215.
- Later supports Torifu’s Butterfly Mode with Wind Release, drawing on their shared training and years of combat experience 218.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Sword-cane — Drawn when Danzo gives the signal for the assault on Feiniao Fortress 192.
- Kagami Uchiha’s tachi — Originally given to Kagami by Tobirama. According to Danzo, Kagami passed it to him after Danzo lost an identical gift during a mission. Danzo subsequently gives it to Gen as part of his recruitment attempt 168 169.
- Wind-enhanced shuriken — Ranged weapons used in combination with Gen’s Amaterasu and Kagutsuchi 214 215.
Relationships
- Tobirama Senju — Teacher and model for Danzo’s ideal of a Hokage’s meaningful self-sacrifice 169 191.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Hokage, longtime associate, and political rival. Danzo performs covert work for him while seeking his position 40 169 181.
- Kagami Uchiha — Childhood companion and longtime battlefield partner. Danzo invokes their friendship when trying to recruit Kagami’s nephew, Gen 165 168 193.
- Uchiha Gen — Desired recruit, political obstacle, combat partner, and medical provider. Gen rejects leadership of Root but later cooperates with him against the Third Raikage 169 193 219.
- Orochimaru — Rival commander and reluctant collaborator. Their struggle over authority ends in temporary unified command; Orochimaru later exploits Danzo’s injury to obtain backing for cloning research 166 181 220.
- Torifu Akimichi — Fellow student of Tobirama and experienced combat partner. Torifu risks his life to protect Danzo during the Raikages’ assault 217 218.
- Root operatives — Loyal subordinates and personal guards. A group forms a human wall to protect him and is wiped out by the Third Raikage 218.
- Uchiha Clan — Target of Danzo’s aggressive precautions and schemes. Recruiting Gen would give him leverage over both the clan and Orochimaru 169.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Kumogakure Front and Command Rivalry
- Danzo and Hiruzen return from the Land of Hot Water after heavy losses against Kumogakure 127.
- A subsequent breakthrough led by the Third Raikage forces Danzo to retreat toward the national border. Preserving his army costs Konoha territory and complicates Orochimaru’s reinforcement operation 157.
- Danzo arrives after Orochimaru’s forces have repelled Kumogakure, leaving him without the battle’s credit and exposed to blame for delayed support 165.
- Both commanders seek control of the combined army. Danzo argues that better coordination would have allowed his reinforcements to deliver a decisive flank attack 166.
Attempt to Recruit Gen
- Danzo summons Gen to a private riverside meeting and presents Kagami’s sword as a keepsake 167 168.
- He offers to groom Gen as Root’s next leader, ostensibly so Gen can support Orochimaru as the future Fourth Hokage 169.
- His underlying objectives are to strengthen Root, gain leverage over the Uchiha, and subordinate Orochimaru’s faction. Gen accepts the sword but refuses recruitment 169.
- Gen subsequently worries that Danzo might target Uchiha Sumi to lure him into a trap; no such attack is established in the supplied events 170.
Trap and Forced Cooperation
- Orochimaru makes Danzo believe an important Kumogakure logistics site is vulnerable. The opening is false, and Danzo returns wounded with heavy losses among Root’s elites 179 180.
- Orochimaru arranges to rescue him rather than let him die; the manipulation remains secret between Orochimaru and Gen 180.
- Needing a victory to salvage his status, Danzo exchanges full military and intelligence cooperation for promised primary credit in the fortress campaign 181 182.
- He serves as the offensive’s nominal leader and charges ahead with conspicuous Wind Release attacks, while Orochimaru directs the operation 192.
Land of Frost Battle
- Danzo leads the charge to build prestige sufficient to compete with Orochimaru for the Hokage position, while keeping Root elites around him for protection 211.
- He and Gen contain and wound the Third Raikage through complementary attacks 212 214.
- Danzo reveals Amaterasu’s persistent burning effect to intimidate their opponent. Gen reprimands him for disclosing useful intelligence 215.
- The Third Raikage targets Danzo during his desperate last stand. Amid the rescue attempts, the Fourth Raikage severs Danzo’s arm 217.
- Root guards die defending him, while Torifu uses the dangerous red chili pill to continue fighting alongside him 218.
Replacement-Limb Bargain
- After Konoha’s victory, Danzo seeks Gen’s help with his severed arm 219.
- Gen explains that reattachment is possible, but burned nerves and meridians would leave its movement and hand-seal speed drastically reduced 220.
- Orochimaru proposes cloning replacement limbs through the Medical Department rather than repeating the lethal Wood Release experiments 220.
- Danzo agrees to seek Hiruzen’s approval and provide Hashirama Cells as payment. He hopes to recover his combat ability, share in the project’s prestige, and potentially obtain Wood Release power 220.
- The context does not establish that his arm is subsequently restored.
Notable Quotes
“He is the Hokage, the light of Konoha. I am Konoha’s shadow, existing as an important supplement to the Hokage.” 169
“If you ever need anything, you may come to this old man. Root’s doors will always be open to you.” 169
Trivia
- Gen notices that Kagami’s sword has a badly neglected hilt, undermining Danzo’s claim that he regularly uses it to remember old friends. He nevertheless considers the weapon likely authentic 169.
- Orochimaru later says he needs a “Danzo” of his own: someone to bear political responsibility for controversial work. He and Gen select Dan Katō as the intended public-facing safeguard for the cloning project 222.
