Background

The Sharingan is the Uchiha Clan’s defining bloodline limit and a manifestation of Yin Release Chakra. Its awakening and number of tomoe determine an Uchiha’s standing, benefits, and authority within the clan. Awakened members receive clan support, while those with greater tomoe are regarded as stronger and hold greater status. 28 50 141

The Uchiha Clan considers the Sharingan’s emotional awakening and evolution central to its strength. Older Uchiha often find further evolution more difficult because their emotions are more stable, whereas young clan members are sent to battle partly because intense experiences can produce more powerful Sharingan. 51

The known progression runs from One-Tomoe to Two-Tomoe, Three-Tomoe, and ultimately the Mangekyō Sharingan. The Mangekyō is described as surpassing the Three-Tomoe stage and as the power that allowed Madara and Izuna Uchiha to contend with Hashirama and Tobirama Senju. 123
