Background / History

Konoha is home to the Uchiha Clan, one of its founding clans and described as the village's strongest ninja clan. The clan's influence and demands for status create continuing friction with the village's higher-ups, who are unwilling to accept power matching the Uchiha's military strength 8 14.

The Uchiha and Senju jointly founded Konoha. During Hashirama Senju's leadership, his strength and lack of prejudice toward the Uchiha helped contain disputes. Tobirama Senju subsequently placed the Uchiha in charge of the Military Police Force, granting them substantial authority while restricting their involvement elsewhere in the village's power structure. The deaths of Tobirama and Kagami Uchiha removed both the leader capable of suppressing these contradictions and the intermediary connecting the Uchiha to the village's upper ranks, allowing tensions to deepen 12 16 145.

The village's leadership regards Uchiha Gen as a potential successor to Kagami Uchiha: a politically reliable Uchiha who could help bridge the divide between the clan and Konoha's command structure 8 136.

Konoha's central authority rests with Hiruzen and his senior advisers. Beneath them, posts such as Jonin Squad Leader, Police Force leadership, and Anbu leadership carry substantial departmental authority. The Jonin Conference reviews appointments, military deployments, administrative finances, the Daimyo's military funding, and mission income through procedures established by Tobirama 142 144 149.

The team's composition serves Hiruzen's political goal of connecting a talented Uchiha to the Hokage faction. Enju's position as the Hokage's son and Orochimaru's role as their instructor strengthen the intended connection between Gen and the village leadership 8 9 16.

Kumogakure Delegation Incident

A Kumogakure envoy arrives in Konoha amid tense peace negotiations. Kumogakure shinobi subsequently kidnap villagers and target Kushina, prompting Konoha shinobi to mount rescues and Hiruzen to order a joint search for foreign spies operating in the village 36 42 43.

The Military Police Force, Anbu, and Intelligence Division cooperate in the search. Gen, Minato, and the Police Force receive credit for an S-rank mission for rescuing the kidnapped individuals. The incident also leads the leadership to approve the Police Force's previously rejected requests to participate in the war, anticipating further escalation and manpower shortages 43 50.

Nine-Tails Sealing

Konoha completes the Nine-Tails' sealing during Mito Uzumaki's trial for the next generation. The event marks the transfer of responsibility from Mito's generation to Hiruzen and the younger shinobi 56.

Mito's passing removes Hiruzen's last senior protector. Tsunade subsequently becomes the principal representative of the Senju, whose branches increasingly withdraw from public life as the older generation dies out 56 128.

Land of Rain War

Konoha establishes a military camp in the Land of Rain and commits genin, chunin, jonin, and medical personnel to the conflict 68 71 83. Its forces fight Sunagakure, Iwagakure, and Amegakure while Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade assume major command and combat roles 71 94 95 99.

After confronting Hanzo, Orochimaru persuades Amegakure to pursue an alliance with Konoha, reshaping the village's battle plans 99 100 104.

Sunagakure eventually withdraws its supplies and forces rather than continue a direct confrontation with Konoha's superior strength. Returning Konoha troops receive both celebrations and grieving families: the village's total force in the Land of Rain has fallen from more than six thousand to a little over five thousand after approximately a year of fighting 123.

Medical Department Debate

The Jonin Conference debates Tsunade's proposed Medical Department. Although wartime pressures initially block the plan, support from Orochimaru and many Uchiha jonin shifts the discussion; Hiruzen later authorizes the department under restrictions 144 145.

Gen helps build the Uchiha support behind the proposal by emphasizing reduced casualties, improved sustained combat capability, and opportunities within the new institution. The clan also considers investing in medical training and recruiting Yakushi Nonō to teach Medical Ninjutsu 141 142 145.

Conflict with Kumogakure

Konoha mobilizes nearly 8,000 shinobi when Kumogakure breaks through Danzō's defensive line. Orochimaru's force, including Uchiha Gen, reinforces the front and repels attacks led by the Third and Fourth Raikage and Karai 157 165.

Approximately four thousand reinforcements initially travel under Orochimaru. Danzō's withdrawal preserves his army but abandons territory and complicates the reinforcements' route, requiring reconnaissance and coordination before the separated Konoha forces can safely unite 157.

Danzō later negotiates with Orochimaru over cooperation, command authority, and battle credit while warning that Kumogakure intends to use the Six Paths Tools. An advance team's infiltration subsequently opens the way for six thousand Konoha shinobi to assault the enemy fortress, with Gen, Orochimaru, and Danzō occupying the opposing village's strongest fighters 181 192 193.

The recovery of Feiniao Fortress ends a prolonged stalemate with a phased victory. Although the front returns approximately to its earlier position, reduced pressure from the Land of Rain and the stronghold's strategic value allow Konoha to shift from defense to offense 195.

Village Infiltration and Uchiha Succession

The transfer of more than seventy percent of the Military Police Force's elites to the front weakens its investigations within Konoha, particularly in the Uchiha Clan Grounds. Enemy operatives exploit the opening to infiltrate the Intelligence Division, steal records, and attack the Uchiha ancestral shrine in pursuit of Three-Tomoe Sharingan 200.

Gen and Orochimaru connect the attacks on the village and fortress to an elusive enemy possessing advanced infiltration skills and knowledge of the Uchiha. Analysis of a preserved White Zetsu finger reveals DNA identical to Hashirama's, suggesting that the enemy's research into the First Hokage's cells exceeds Konoha's own. They also consider the possibility that the attacks are intended to frame Gen and force his estrangement from the clan and village 201.

Gen's Mangekyō revelation secures the allegiance of the Uchiha elders and frontline elites amid Fugaku's disappearance. On returning to Konoha, he is asked by Hiruzen to stabilize the clan. The Great Elder has meanwhile suppressed internal dissent and taken over clan affairs and the Police Force following the former clan head's abdication 204 205.

The security breach has further consequences when Madara uses stolen information about Konoha's barrier techniques to unlock an ancient sealed chamber in the Land of Fire with Fugaku's assistance 226.

Scroll of Seals Access

As a reward for battlefield achievements, Hiruzen grants Gen permission to study one technique from the Scroll of Seals. Gen and Orochimaru return to Konoha after handing fortress defenses over to Torifu Akimichi and are escorted by Anbu into the restricted archive 201 204.

Gen finds the Flying Thunder God Jutsu absent from the catalog available to him and interprets its omission as evidence of Hiruzen's continuing distrust. He selects the Multi-Shadow Clone Technique, memorizes it under the archive's restrictions, and rapidly creates more than a dozen clones 204 205.

Advance through the Land of Frost

After Gen and Orochimaru return to Feiniao Fortress, Konoha concentrates approximately eight thousand troops on the front. Hiruzen entrusts Orochimaru with nearly half of the village's elite strength, seeking a rapid victory as prolonged warfare depletes Konoha's reserves 208.

Over the following months, Orochimaru's army wins successive battles and drives Kumogakure northward. By the beginning of the next year, Konoha reaches the border between the Lands of Hot Water and Frost, opening the possibility of threatening the Land of Lightning directly 208.

Decisive Victory and Its Aftermath

Konoha's later victory kills the Third Raikage and Karai, with Orochimaru responsible for Karai's death. Kumogakure's routed troops suffer further casualties under pursuit by giant snakes from Ryūchi Cave and Gen's shadow clones. Konoha publicly announces the battle as a glorious success capable of changing the course of the war 224.

The victory carries severe costs. The Akimichi clan head dies, Torifu is weakened enough to require nearly a year of recovery, Nara Lu Ping suffers serious injuries, and Danzō's reattached arm retains irreversible nerve and meridian damage. These losses force Orochimaru to rely on smaller raids rather than further large-scale operations, while Chōza returns to Konoha with his father's coffin for burial 224.

The war remains unresolved. Danzō stays in the field to direct Root agents inside Kumogakure, while Blue B becomes acting Raikage with support from the Fourth Raikage and Dodai. Kumogakure's survivors establish a final defensive line at the Land of Lightning's border, backed by increased funding from the Lightning Daimyo 225 226.

Konoha's pursuit brings it close to invading the Land of Lightning, reversing the near-retreat that preceded Orochimaru and Gen's arrival. Nevertheless, the deployed army has reached the limit of what it can accomplish without committing substantially more of Konoha's remaining strength 226.
