Background / History

Hiruzen was a disciple of the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju, and was among the Hokage Guard Unit during the Kumogakure peace mission that ended in Tobirama staying behind to cover his disciples. Afterward, Hiruzen personally led search parties in an attempt to recover his teacher. He considers recovering Tobirama’s sealed body a personal and political obligation. 40

For much of his tenure, Hiruzen’s position was reinforced by the prior Hokage’s legacy, Mito Uzumaki’s support, and the Senju faction. Following Mito’s final trial and the conclusion of the Nine-Tails sealing crisis, he recognizes that he must lead Konoha without her protection. 56

He sees the growing divide between Konoha’s leadership and the Uchiha Clan as a future threat. After observing Uchiha Gen’s talent and temperament, Hiruzen seeks to bring him into the Hokage faction and cultivate him as a new bridge between the village and the Uchiha. 8 9
