Background / History
Rayleigh began practicing swordsmanship to survive rather than to pursue fame. Roger later brought him aboard his ship, where Rayleigh became the First Mate and devoted himself to helping Roger reach the top of the pirate world. Although he became a Great Swordsman, he never sought the title of the world’s strongest swordsman for himself. 12
As a core Roger Pirates officer, Rayleigh fought opponents such as Garp and Golden Lion Shiki, protected the crew from disasters, and helped develop younger members including Shirakawa. His own training style is practical and harsh: he tested Shirakawa’s regenerative ability through repeated injuries, then imposed physical conditioning under constant supervision. 8 51 56
After the Roger Pirates disbanded and Roger was arrested, Rayleigh went into hiding rather than provoke the Navy into pursuing the remnants of Roger’s crew. He settled around Sabaody Archipelago with Shakky, gambling frequently and later working as a coating craftsman. 185 196 221
Appearance
Rayleigh was initially described as a yellow-haired man wearing glasses. In later years, his hair is white; his body bears dozens of scars accumulated over a lifetime at sea. 1 20 369
- Wears glasses in his younger years. 1
- Has numerous large, overlapping scars across his body. 20
- Uses an eyepatch-like upper-face mask when concealing his identity. 196
- Carries a sword and keeps it ready to draw when danger appears. 1
Personality
Rayleigh is relaxed, sarcastic, and often irresponsible-looking in daily life. He openly enjoys gambling, alcohol, and women, and will delay serious conversations to finish a few rounds at a casino. 19 369
Beneath that casual behavior, he is deeply loyal to Roger and protective of the people he considers family. He worries about Roger’s illness, recognizes Bai Chuan’s willingness to sacrifice himself for his crew, and quietly supports younger pirates without trying to control their paths. 24 195 203
He is also blunt as a mentor. Rayleigh deliberately exposes Shirakawa’s complacency, refusing to let his student mistake surviving a few exchanges for true strength. 43
Abilities & Skills
Master Swordsmanship
Rayleigh is a Great Swordsman whose style was developed through real combat and personal experimentation rather than formal inheritance. 12 387
- Split a massive sea tornado with Sword Qi before it could destroy the Roger Pirates’ ship. 8
- Intercepted Golden Lion Shiki’s powerful slash with an equally strong strike. 56
- Held Garp back during the Navy’s assault while preventing him from interfering with Roger’s battle. 51
- Considers fighting Douglas Bullet bare-handed to be impractical; his sword is central to his combat strength. 387
Haki
Rayleigh possesses Conqueror’s Haki and is regarded as one of the Roger Pirates’ strongest Haki users. 20
- Identified Shirakawa’s newly awakened Conqueror’s Haki and assessed its potential. 7
- Is sought out by Shirakawa for Armament Haki instruction because Shirakawa considers Rayleigh’s Armament stronger than Gaban’s. 48
- Detects hostile intent and killing aura, including the bloodlust of Mol’s pursuing general. 24
Combat Instruction
Rayleigh trained Shirakawa from his earliest days aboard the Roger Pirates, beginning with testing the limits and stamina cost of Shirakawa’s regeneration. 7 8
- Designed endurance and strength training around Shirakawa’s stamina limitation. 8
- Used sparring pressure to reveal Shirakawa’s lack of experience and overconfidence. 43
- Helped shape Shirakawa’s swordsmanship before Shirakawa later became a Great Swordsman. 12 221
- Warned Luffy not to provoke Bai Chuan before he was strong enough, then continued helping Luffy train in later years. 344 396
Ship Coating
After retiring from piracy, Rayleigh became a coating master on Sabaody Archipelago. 221
- Coated the Silver Pirate Group’s ship for its descent to Fish-Man Island. 228
- Was later asked to coat a ship for the Silver Pirates’ infiltration of Big Mom’s territory. 396
- Uses his coating work as a low-profile occupation despite his reputation as Roger’s First Mate. 238
