Background / History
Jola was trained by the retired Great Swordsman Orl alongside his senior brother, Dracule Mihawk. He began swordsmanship later than Mihawk—at ten years old—but resolved to surpass him and spread Orl's school across the seas. He won a local swordsmanship tournament before leaving home. 67 72
After being injured in a clash with Shirakawa, Jola brought him to meet Orl. Orl saw Shirakawa as a worthy opponent, while Jola insisted that any grievance between himself and Shirakawa should be settled personally. 67
Jola chose to sail with Shirakawa because he believed remaining near him would accelerate his growth. After Orl taught him Shadow Step, he formally asked to join Shirakawa; together, they established the Silver Pirate Group and devised its Jolly Roger. 72 73
He left his village with only a small backpack and his two blades. The villagers gave him a warm farewell, while Orl watched the ship depart from the cliffside. 81
Five years after the Silver Pirate Group disbanded, Jola returned to Orl with news that Bai Chuan had survived. He later reunited with the crew as a Great Swordsman and challenged Bai Chuan to test the strength he had gained. 184 210 211
Personality
Jola was initially aloof and rarely spoke to others, but grew more expressive after joining Shirakawa. He can be boastful, competitive, and openly complains when dissatisfied, particularly about bounties, training, or opponents he considers unworthy. 71 107 282
He is intensely ambitious about swordsmanship and measures himself against Mihawk, Zoro, and other elite swordsmen. Despite his pride, he recognizes the gap between himself and stronger fighters and seeks difficult battles to improve. 72 101 285
Jola is deeply loyal to Bai Chuan and wants to help him become Pirate King, even using that ambition to challenge Zoro's resolve. 255 338
His teasing side is especially apparent around Mihawk; he repeatedly misread Mihawk's household dynamic with Perona and Zoro, provoking his senior brother's anger. 337
Abilities & Skills
Dual-Sword Style
Jola fights with two blades and is an elite dual-sword-style swordsman.
- Uses powerful Sword Qi capable of sending opponents flying and destroying obstacles. 254 265
- Can coat both blades in Armament Haki to cut opponents protected by Devil Fruit powers or Iron Body. 91 101
- Uses Dual-Sword Style: Instant Flash, a speed-based technique comparable to a drawing slash. 212
- Initially used a self-developed grip to suppress his strength against Zoro; when serious, he adopts a conventional sword grip and displays smoother swordsmanship. 416
- Defeated Zoro in both their early spar and their later serious duel, while acknowledging Zoro's exceptional growth. 338 416 421
Armament Haki
Jola learned Armament Haki from Orl before meeting Shirakawa.
- Turns his blades black to strike Logia users physically. 91
- Severely wounded the flour-based Logia user Gral, disproving Gral's belief that he was invincible. 91
- Could cut through a Marine Rear Admiral's Iron Body, though the Rear Admiral's mastery of the Six Styles still inflicted significant damage on him. 101 102
- His Armament Haki was stronger than Gellicho's, allowing him to break through the pirate's defenses. 255
Observation Haki
Jola possesses Observation Haki, though he was still unreliable with it when Shirakawa first explained Conqueror's Haki to him.
- At first, it only activated occasionally. 66
- Later reacted quickly enough to block a concealed needle attack aimed at him in Wano. 265
Shadow Step
Shadow Step is Orl's secret footwork technique, taught to Jola before he sailed.
- Designed for both escape and lethal engagements. 73
- Considered difficult for swordsmen of comparable strength to deal with. 73
- Orl stated it would become unnecessary once Jola reached Great Swordsman level. 73
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Twin blades — Jola’s usual swords; he carried them when departing Orl’s village. 81
