Background

Madara was Uchiha Tajima's eldest son and Uchiha Izuna's older brother. While still the Young Clan Head, he rejected Tajima's manipulative leadership and blamed his father's methods for the factional divisions within the Uchiha Clan. He instead wanted to unite the clan's strength against the Senju. 5

He first met Uchiha Kyosuke when Kyosuke returned from the Southern Legion. Madara treated him as a peer rather than a tool of the clan, invited him to dinner, and came to regard him as a kindred spirit. He later assigned two elite guards, Uchiha Izumi and Uchiha Maya, to support Kyosuke's command in the Southern Legion. 5 14

Madara's friendship with Senju Hashirama began during the Warring States period. He shared Hashirama's hope of ending clan warfare and building a village, but their bond repeatedly conflicted with his duty to the Uchiha. Despite his arrogance, Madara takes responsibility seriously. After Tajima disappeared, he immediately assumed the burden of protecting the clan; after Tajima's death, he confronted Uchiha Koji's attempt to exploit the succession crisis. 119 121 He wanted the clan to recognize that his strength came from himself, not merely from his Mangekyō Sharingan or inherited position. 120

Madara enjoys combat against worthy opponents, particularly Hashirama, but his desire for battle does not erase his attachment to those close to him.
