Background

Karin and her mother, Kana, were Uzumaki survivors held by Kusagakure. Because their chakra carried immense vitality, the village treated them as “human-shaped pills”: injured shinobi bit them to absorb chakra and recover from injuries. The repeated draining left Kana near death and made Karin a strategic asset Kusagakure refused to release. 25 26 36

She joined Mo Chen's Heroine Group while hiding in a dilapidated hut outside Kusagakure. Initially frightened by the unfamiliar chat interface, she cautiously introduced herself after Ino, Tenten, and Hinata reassured her. 25

Although Karin did not ask the group for help, Mo Chen intervened in Kusagakure, protected her from the hospital staff, and extracted both her and Kana from the village. After Kana recovered, Karin was overwhelmed that she had escaped the abuse she had endured. 30 34 37

Personality

After her rescue, she becomes openly affectionate, excitable, and intensely admiring of Mo Chen. Her gratitude motivates her to train relentlessly, and she measures much of her own progress by whether she can stand beside him in battle. 33 69 78

Her experiences with Kusagakure leave her fiercely protective of Kana and hostile toward Grass shinobi. When she finally retaliates against them during the Chūnin Exams, however, she is shaken by the aftermath and chooses not to kill a surviving opponent. 142 143
