Mo Chen initially believes himself to be an ordinary outsider, but his concealed heritage is gradually uncovered. His father was a Senju who hid his surname within Konoha and was Tobirama Senju's biological grandson; his mother was Fugaku Uchiha's cousin. Later revelations also establish Uzumaki blood in his lineage. His past and background had been deliberately concealed, and he was attacked outside Konoha under unclear circumstances 19 90 103.

He activates his Sharingan after enduring bullying intended to force an awakening. Although initially shocked, he deliberately conceals his understanding of the bloodline limit from the observers watching him 4.

During Team 9's assessment, Chie Mai and Ryota betray him. His ensuing Wood Style outburst binds and drains Endo Hiroshi, Chie Mai, and Ryota; he cannot initially control the ability, recognizing that his power has outpaced his foundation 8 9.
