Background / History

Luffy first encounters Sun Busong after mistaking him for a Stormwind spy. Sun’s unexpected knowledge of the Defias Brotherhood, Luffy’s hidden base, and Vanessa causes Luffy to capture and interrogate him. Luffy ultimately believes Sun’s claims after using his talent to judge that he is telling the truth, then accepts him as a friend and permits him to remain with the Brotherhood. 20

As leader of the Defias Brotherhood, Luffy shelters civilians suffering under Stormwind’s nobles, giving them food, clothing, and work. He also rescues Uncle Ebony and Usop when they intervene against noble forces persecuting civilians, leading both Paladins to join the Defias cause. 143

Sun Busong gradually persuades Luffy to leave the Brotherhood’s outlaw status behind.
