History

Before joining Sun Busong, Chi Tao was a seasoned Warsong Gulch participant who had frequented battlegrounds for years. Though he lost roughly six out of ten matches, he regarded them as the best place to practice because combatants did not die there. His Shadow Panther had been his companion for more than ten years. 75 79

Sun Busong met Chi Tao while drinking with Night Elf warriors in Darnassus. Chi Tao agreed to follow only someone stronger than himself, so he challenged Sun Busong to a duel. His arrows barely reduced Sun Busong's health before his mana ran out; impressed rather than discouraged, Chi Tao accepted Sun Busong as his boss. 67

He became the party's guide through Kalimdor, scouting routes and handling local matters as a native Night Elf. He also supported Sun Busong's decision to save Anaya rather than simply kill her, and guarded Serelian and Anaya's resurrection ritual with his Shadow Panther. 68 71

During the battle against Blarion Fire Fist, Chi Tao's Shadow Panther was killed while attacking the mage's shield. Overcome by grief and rage, Chi Tao initially tried to rush Fire Fist, but Sun Busong stopped him and ordered him to seek reinforcements. A year later, Chi Tao still mourned the panther and refused to force a new beast into a companion contract. 75 86 101

With Xiu Ma's assistance, Chi Tao eventually formed a contract with the Silver Elite lion Broken Fang. He later received training from Illina Darkwood and demonstrated a three-element Hunter talent. 97 102 118

After the Sunken Temple campaign, Sun Busong assigned Chi Tao to establish a Hunter squad alongside White Claw. Chi Tao later returned from Kalimdor with Heavy Fist after helping resolve conflicts involving Centaurs, Tauren, and Harpies; however, their unauthorized extermination of the Harpies led Sun Busong to fine both men and temporarily strip their captain positions. 140 430

Personality

Chi Tao is competitive and strength-oriented. His condition for joining Sun Busong was a direct duel, and he openly admired Sun Busong after seeing his endurance, authority over Heavy Fist, and unusual bond with Xiu Ma. 67 68

He is deeply attached to his animal companions. The Shadow Panther's death left him grieving for a year, and he refused to bind a wild beast through force, believing a companion contract required mutual connection. 75 86 101

Despite occasional opportunism—such as quietly pocketing the Hand of Justice—Chi Tao is loyal to the group. He protects allies by taking dangerous aggro, advocates compensation for members excluded from Talent Gem distribution, and accepts responsibility when Sun Busong rebukes him over the Harpies. 108 139 199 430
