Background

Usop was originally an ordinary Paladin and Uncle Ebony's apprentice within Luffy's Defias Rogue group. Sun Busong personally recruited him into the first Imperial Guard core team, trusting that Ebony would find a path for Usop's advancement. 20

Usop and his master joined the Defias organization after witnessing Stormwind nobles' forces oppress civilians. Although the two Paladins were initially constrained by their faith from killing, Luffy's group rescued them and nearby civilians during one such confrontation. Usop adopted the Defias identity to continue pursuing justice outside Stormwind's authority. 143

After the defense of Night Town, Sun Busong entrusted Usop with the town's management, Imperial Guard recruitment, and 100,000 gold coins in operating funds while he traveled with Heavy Fist. 33 Usop's administration helped place Night Town on a path of development, though Sun Busong later intended to move him away from logistics and back toward larger operations. 45

Personality

Usop is intensely loyal to Sun Busong and consistently treats him as both commander and elder brother. He carries out orders diligently, manages details efficiently, and repeatedly takes responsibility when Sun Busong is absent. 33 146 153

He is cautious and practical in battle. During the Night Town siege, he ordered the available magic users to conserve mana and focus-fire the Banshees rather than waste resources dispelling confused soldiers. 31 He also prioritizes security, proposing that Goblin Amateur Radios be restricted through a Reputation or Contribution system rather than freely distributed. 141

Despite his professionalism, Usop can be excitable around rare equipment, envious of Luffy's good fortune, and openly delighted by his armored Swift Zulian Tiger mount. 143 344 401 He also has occasional clumsy moments, including accidentally stealing one million gold coins from Sun Busong during the Alterac Valley battle. 368
