Classification and Physiology

Soul Beasts are living creatures that cultivate Soul Power rather than possessing Martial Souls. Their accumulated Soul Power is stored in their bodies, alongside a Soul Power Seed that continually absorbs ambient energy 42 94.

• Animal-type Soul Beasts — absorb Soul Power from the air; their Soul Power Seeds are located in their brains and resemble miniature embryos 32 42.
• Plant-type Soul Beasts — absorb Soul Power from both air and soil; their Soul Power Seeds grow in their roots 32 42.
• Attribute plant Soul Beasts — possess a Wood-attribute Soul Power Seed and a second, stronger Seed of another attribute, which determines their outward elemental traits 42.
• Sea Soul Beasts — inhabit the sea; their numbers make Humanoid Transformation dangerous, as transformed individuals may be devoured by other Soul Beasts before reaching land 227.

Plant Soul Beasts gradually enrich the surrounding air with Soul Power through respiration. Older plants therefore raise the Soul Power concentration around them, although their roots can exhaust the soil’s stored Soul Power and leave them waiting centuries or longer for natural replenishment 32.

Soul Rings and Soul Bones

Soul Rings

A Soul Ring may appear after a Soul Beast is killed. Human Soul Masters require one every ten levels to continue advancing 4.

A Soul Ring retains the Soul Beast’s soul, Soul Power Seed, and cultivation. During absorption, a Soul Master must endure the soul’s impact, absorb a compatible Soul Power Seed, and withstand the cultivation energy with their physical body 49.

• Soul Beasts below ten thousand years have weak souls and rarely pose a serious mental threat during Ring absorption 16 49.
• Soul Beasts above ten thousand years possess consciousness and can launch a powerful Soul Shock through their Ring 16 49.
• An incompatible elemental attribute can cause the absorbing Soul Master’s body to explode 16.
• A Soul Skill is the evolution of a Soul Beast’s innate ability; the remnant mental power within a Ring allows the Soul Master to activate that skill with Soul Power 16.
• Plant-type Soul Beasts must be burned to be fully killed; merely cutting off their upper portions leaves their roots alive and prevents Ring formation 15.

Soul Bones

Soul Bones are linked to compressed Soul Power and powerful bloodlines rather than the manner of a Soul Beast’s death. When such a Soul Beast dies, the Soul Power not used to form its Soul Ring may attach to its strongest bone and transform it into a Soul Bone 94.

• Soul Beasts with ordinary bloodlines often lack enough compressed Soul Power to form even one Soul Bone 94.
• Strong bloodlines naturally compress Soul Power, enabling Soul Beasts to fight above their apparent level 94.
• Er Ming’s Soul Power was observed to be roughly 2.8 times that of an ordinary Soul Beast, with especially powerful arm bones 94.

Humanoid Transformation

A Soul Beast that reaches a sufficient cultivation level can take human form. This does not always mean it has ceased to be a Soul Beast; the Silver Dragon King distinguishes between retaining one’s Soul Beast nature in human form and a transformation that fundamentally changes one’s race 212.

At one hundred thousand years, a Soul Beast can transform to avoid its lightning tribulation. This process makes it essentially human apart from the Soul Rings retained in its body; it begins again as a child and can absorb the stored Soul Power in those Rings after reaching Rank 60, at which point its Soul Beast aura disappears completely 213.

• Soul Beasts who transform at one hundred thousand years to avoid a tribulation are viewed by some as traitors to the Soul Beast race 213.
• In the setting’s older racial terminology, beings capable of both beast and human forms are classified as the Demon Beast Race 212.
• Humanoid Transformation can rapidly improve Spiritual Power, while education at Soul Beast Academy further develops intelligence and social behavior 218.
• Transformed Soul Beasts can use Soul Power Clothing, creating and changing garments through Soul Power 101.
• Big White transformed while at eighty thousand years, later passed her hundred-thousand-year tribulation, and absorbed the remaining power in her internal Ring to reach nearly one hundred ninety thousand years of cultivation 218.

Story Role / Major Arcs

• Source of Soul Rings and fertilizer — Early in the story, Soul Beast corpses become central to Jerry’s cultivation research when he discovers that burying them beneath his planted Martial Soul provides enormous quantities of Soul Power 12.
• Star Dou Great Forest development — Da Ming declares that no Soul Beast may harm Jerry and introduces his plan to cultivate healing, detoxification, and Soul Power recovery Plant Soul Beasts 27.
• Forest reorganization — Jerry teaches Ten Thousand Year Soul Beasts how Plant Soul Beasts replenish environmental Soul Power, use fertilizer, and establish mimicry cultivation areas 32.
• Collective defense — The reorganized Soul Beasts begin coordinating across regions, making the Ten Thousand Year region a forbidden zone for human Soul Masters and causing severe losses among investigating sect disciples 33.

Conflict and Coexistence

Humanity’s discovery that Soul Beast Rings could be absorbed turned hunting into a widespread path of advancement. Early conflicts placed Plant Soul Beasts at a particular disadvantage because they were immobile, while humans hunted in groups 224.

Later reforms promote alternatives to indiscriminate hunting:

• Spirit Hall breeds Soul Beasts and allows prospective contractors to personally feed and build familiarity with them before forming contracts 243.
• A contract allows a Soul Beast to cultivate faster through the Soul Master’s Soul Power Seed, while the resulting Soul Ring grows gradually rather than causing a dangerous one-time surge of power 242.
• A long-lived contracted Soul Beast may protect a Soul Master’s descendants and form a new contract with them after its original partner dies naturally 243.
• Jerry advocates sustainable use of captive Soul Beasts, including repeated blood collection supported by Blood Replenishing Pills rather than killing an animal for a single harvest 230.

The Soul Tool World demonstrates the opposite outcome: Beast Tamers used Soul Sealing Soul Tools and violence to enslave Soul Beasts, eventually capturing them on such a scale that land-based Soul Beast populations neared collapse 232.
