Background / History

Following the Dao-Demon Conflict, Luohu's destruction of the western earth veins left immense Karma upon Hongjun. To help repay it, Hongjun preserved and cultivated the Innate Bitter Bamboo and Seven Treasures Bodhi Tree—future Jieyin and Zhunti—as eventual bearers of the West's burden. 2 3

Hongjun monitored the western lands because of this Karma. When Jieyin's Form Manifestation Heavenly Tribulation drew his attention, he discovered Randeng's extensive repair of the western earth veins. He identified Randeng as a variable carrying a thread of Pangu's Fortune and judged him better suited than Jieyin and Zhunti to lead the West. 5

When Luohu's remnant soul attempted to corrupt Randeng through the Nine-Rank World-Ending Black Lotus and the method of fortune, Hongjun intervened. He halted Luohu's assault, removed Luohu's control over Jieyin, inspected Randeng's Spiritual Platform, and confirmed that Randeng had not used merit to force his cultivation forward. 7 8

Impressed by Randeng's foundation, restraint, fortune, and judgment, Hongjun imparted the Method of Slaying Three Corpses to Attain Sainthood, accepted him as a disciple, and bestowed the Jade Void Glazed Lamp. The arrangement also bound Randeng more deeply to the responsibility of reviving the West. 8

Hongjun later determined that Randeng's early interventions had accelerated numerous events throughout the Great Desolation. While examining these changes, he experienced an internal conflict: one consciousness aligned with Pangu's desire for living beings to retain change and freedom, while another, associated with the Heavenly Dao, regarded Randeng's disruption of heavenly secrets as grounds for execution. Hongjun rejected the latter's demand and proceeded with his intended merger with the Dao. 30

After attaining Sainthood, Hongjun announced that he would lecture at Purple Cloud Palace in thirty thousand years. He subsequently summoned Randeng and explained that the sermon would both guide living beings toward the Great Dao and help Hongjun accumulate the Merit, Destiny, and opportunities needed for his integration with the Dao. 35 37

Appearance

Hongjun is first seen as an ancient, sacred old man with white hair and brows, carrying a Primal Chaos whisk. After his ascension, his presence becomes profoundly unfathomable, surrounded by Purple Qi and the rhythm of the Great Dao. 7 36 37

Hongjun is calculating and discerning. He closely observes the Karma of the West, recognizes Randeng's unusual potential, and evaluates his disciple's decisions before accepting him. His approval of Randeng rests not merely on cultivation talent, but on Randeng's restraint in using merit and his ability to judge circumstances. 5 8

He is protective toward those he chooses to support. Hongjun personally interrupts Luohu's attempt to turn Randeng into a puppet, frees Jieyin from Luohu's control, and provides Randeng with both teachings and powerful treasures. 7 8

Despite his growing alignment with the Heavenly Dao, Hongjun retains a belief that the Great Desolation belongs to all living beings rather than to an autonomous Heavenly Dao. His struggle against the cold, punitive consciousness within himself reflects his resistance to absolute stasis and control. 30
