Background / History

Kunpeng first appears outside Yan Dao Palace, where he and the East Prince pressure Haotian to reveal when the palace will open. He identifies himself as “Kunpeng of the Northern Darkness” and supports the East Prince’s challenge to Haotian’s authority. 12

During the search for seats at Yan Dao Palace, Kunpeng relies on his Innate Extreme Speed and powerful true body to force his way through restriction stages. He claims one of the Golden Cloud seats, but Zhunti targets him after Hongyun yields his own seat. Kunpeng refuses contemptuously, alienating the assembled Great Powers; Primordial Lord of Heaven and Tongtian Sect Master pressure him into yielding the seat. 16 20

Kunpeng holds Hongyun responsible for the humiliation and loss of this opportunity, despite Hongyun having yielded his own seat voluntarily. His resentment deepens after Hongyun obtains Primordial Violet Qi and later prevents Kunpeng from pursuing Human Race refugees inside Zhenyuanzi’s Dao Field. 36 97 99

As a Demon King under Di Jun, Kunpeng proposes attacking Wuzhuang Temple and continuing the Human Race hunt, but Di Jun rejects the proposal and orders him to withdraw. Kunpeng then secretly seeks vengeance against Hongyun. 99

He recruits Styx by offering Hongyun’s Primordial Violet Qi as payment. The pair ambush Hongyun and fight him for eighty-one years; Kunpeng lands the decisive black ray after Hongyun is exhausted. Eastern Emperor Taiyi intervenes before they can claim the Primordial Violet Qi, rebukes Kunpeng for colluding with an outsider, and orders his return to the Heavenly Court. 100 101

After the old Heavenly Court’s fall, Kunpeng builds power in Northern Darkness and attempts to seize the Heavenly Court through his Good Corpse and Evil Corpse. Haotian kills the Evil Corpse and drives off the Good Corpse, leaving Kunpeng with a lasting vendetta against him. 147 148 154

Appearance

Kunpeng can assume an immense true form rather than a human body. In this form, he is a sky-spanning winged giant whose arrival disrupts the surrounding Dao rhythms and spiritual aura. 16

He is also calculating and opportunistic. He recruits allies when advantageous, uses Penglai and the Human Race’s dynastic upheaval to expand his influence, and builds defenses and troop routes across Northern Darkness. 100 201 202 229 239

His defining trait is his determination to survive. When defeat becomes unavoidable, he abandons armies, territory, spiritual treasures, essence blood, and ultimately his Quasi-Saint Peak body rather than die. 245 246 248
