Background

Chu Qing is the youngest of Chu Yunfei's three sons. While his brothers Chu Tian and Chu Fan were recognized as exceptional talents, Chu Qing was regarded as the comparatively mediocre son. His father arranged a marriage between him and Wu Qianhuan, but Chu Qing rejected the life chosen for him and left home at twelve, promising to pursue his own chivalrous path. 1

For most of the next seven years, he cultivated the Chu Family's inherited Void Scripture in seclusion. Once he began traveling the jianghu, he joined the Sin Mirror Platform, believing its claim of punishing the wicked on behalf of heaven. He later discovered that the organization fabricated accusations for its own interests; after investigating Zhou Changtai and refusing to kill him, Chu Qing warned the intended target and was ambushed by five Sin Mirror Platform assassins. 1

After awakening in a forest with the Assassin System, Chu Qing received the Swift Flying Sword and chose to return secretly to Heavenly Dance City. He did not initially intend to reveal himself, but the Sin Mirror Platform's plot against Chu Yunfei made him fear that abandoning his father would become an irreversible regret. 1 3

Appearance

Chu Qing frequently changes his clothing, voice, mannerisms, and identity to avoid recognition. He commonly operates in dark clothing with a mask when acting as the Night Emperor, but has also passed himself off as a beggar, farmer, porter, and household servant. 3 11 14 22

His one-sword assassination of Xin Youhen was arranged by provoking Xin's pride into allowing him the first strike. 23 24

As an assassin, he is pragmatic about money, rewards, and methods. He openly treats assassination as business, charges clients for information, and uses hidden weapons or poison without hesitation if they improve his odds of survival. 22 24 35

Despite this detachment, he retains a personal sense of justice. He rejected the Sin Mirror Platform's false commission against Zhou Changtai, repeatedly protects Chu Yunfei while remaining anonymous, saves Wen Rou from poison, and gives Er Gou—later Zhou Yi—a chance to rebuild his life. 1 21 43 39
