Geography & Layout

Heavenly Dance City is arranged in a “field” pattern around four main streets. The City Lord's Mansion occupies the center, while the Chu Family residence stands on North Main Street. South Main Street is a busy commercial area with vendors, passing carriages, teahouses, and crowds. 11

• East, west, south, and north gates — The city has four gates, manned by Heavenly Dance Guards; all were shut during the lockdown. 36
• West Street — Luoyu Hall occupies a large compound in the middle of the street. 30
• Du Hua Pavilion — Located east of the city; used by Chu Qing and Wu Qianhuan as a meeting place. 24
• Earth God Temple — An older, neglected temple where Er Gou temporarily shelters; a newer temple caused it to fall out of use. 36
• Cicada Forest — Lies beyond the city and is connected to Luoyu Hall by a long secret passage. Local rumors portray it as haunted, despite prior guard searches finding no proof. 35

Governance & Security

Wu Ganqi serves as Heavenly Dance City's City Lord. He is regarded as a righteous and effective governor; before the later crisis, major Jianghu vendettas were uncommon within his territory. 10

The Heavenly Dance Guards enforce the city's security, patrol its streets and walls, investigate threats, and defend its gates. Their casualties near Ten Thousand Night Valley exposed a wider security crisis: a guard with severed legs crawled toward the city to deliver a cryptic final message. 10 11 20

• The guards are personally devoted to Wu Qianhuan, the City Lord's daughter, treating even her using them as footholds during a pursuit as an honor. 22
• During the lockdown, the guards searched throughout the city and reinforced all four gates. 36
• Their defenses were compromised by Luoyu Hall's concealed passage to Cicada Forest, which enabled hostile forces to enter unseen. 35 45

Political Conflict

Ten Thousand Night Valley

Ten Thousand Night Valley lies east of Heavenly Dance City. Although the two powers had previously maintained a relatively close relationship, friction intensified after the new year, when scouts from the valley began appearing in the city. 19 34

Wu Ganqi first warned Gu Qianqiu, Ten Thousand Night Valley's leader, through correspondence. Gu denied involvement; as incidents continued, he eventually stopped replying. 34

Ten Thousand Night Valley sought Chu Yunfei's death because Chu Yunfei and Wu Ganqi together were considered too strong for it to defeat directly. The intended assassination was meant to clear the way for war against Heavenly Dance City. 26

Luoyu Hall Conspiracy

Luoyu Hall established itself in Heavenly Dance City only three years earlier, rising rapidly from obscurity into one of its major powers. 18 30

Its leadership secretly conspired against the city:

• Liu Shijie, Luoyu Hall's Vice Hall Master, colluded with the Iron Horse Seven Bandits. 24
• Tang Xi cultivated the Hate Heart Demonic Art and was assassinated by Chu Qing. 30 32
• Tang Yinfeng coordinated with Ten Thousand Night Valley, planning to use Luoyu Hall's passage to bring enemy forces into the city for a pincer attack. 35
• The passage concealed gold, weapons, jewelry, and more than ten previously missing civilians. 35

Shashen Gang Infiltration

The Shashen Gang entered Heavenly Dance City through Luoyu Hall's secret passage with the goal of helping bring down the city. Under its agreement with Ten Thousand Night Valley, the gang expected to divide Heavenly Dance City's influence between them after victory. 45

The gang used Steward Liu's mansion as its base while operating within the city. Its leader, Cheng Sihai, believed the lockdown was focused only on Chu Yunfei's reported assassination, unaware that his group had already been exposed. 49 50

• Chu Qing returns to the outskirts of Heavenly Dance City after seven years away from the Chu Family. 3 4
