Background

Jiang Chen spent three years in the demon world before awakening the Zanpakuto Template. Before that awakening, he had failed to awaken a Supernatural Ability and was treated as weak by his academy peers. The system granted him partial access to Lapis Lazuli Infernal Fire, beginning his rapid growth. 1 18

He lives with and acts as guardian to his younger sister, Jiang Xiaolan. During the Sacred Heart Academy crisis, he entered the demon-infested campus despite the danger because she was trapped in the infirmary. He destroyed the S-Class thousand-year female ghost responsible for endangering her. 3

Zhang Banxian initially addressed Jiang Chen as “Uncle-Master Jiang” because Zhang’s master had once been saved by Jiang Chen’s mother. Jiang Chen later learned that his mother was Jiang Li, a Dragon Tiger Mountain disciple who placed the key to the Monster Suppressing Pagoda seal within him to suppress the demonic energy he had been born with. 4 90 172

The key continuously consumed Jiang Chen’s life force, forcing him to seek a Ten Thousand Year Demon Core to stabilize the seal. He eventually separated the key from his body in the Mother-Child River, removing the immediate danger it posed to him. 126 173

Jiang Chen’s past-life memories gradually resurfaced. He learned that his prior self had prepared a century-long plan against Su Daji and that his memories had fully integrated after the assassination attempt by the Royal Dark Guards. Personality

He is protective of the people he considers family. Jiang Xiaolan’s safety drives many of his decisions, while his loyalty to Fatty Wang and Zhang Banxian repeatedly leads him into danger. He released Muramasa’s second seal to save Zhang Banxian from the Ghost Face Spider Queen, believing that neither of them could be allowed to die while their goals remained unfinished. 31 105

His compassion is selective but genuine.
