Background

Jiang Chen first receives the Zanpakuto Template through his system, which allows him to unlock swords by spending Activation Points earned from missions. The required points scale with a weapon's strength, making especially powerful Zanpakuto prohibitively expensive early on 1 2.

His first major acquisition is the Super S-Class support-type Zanpakuto Omniscient. Omniscient initially cannot be released because its condition requires Jiang Chen to possess a female Zanpakuto, prompting him to obtain Sode no Shirayuki 9.

Zanpakuto are not automatically loyal. Omniscient rebels against Jiang Chen, seizes control of his other blades, and demands that Jiang Chen prove himself worthy. Zangetsu intervenes, forces Omniscient into submission, and establishes the principle that kneeling beneath the blade signifies eternal obedience 19.

Over time, Jiang Chen rejects the view that Zanpakuto are merely disposable weapons. His partnership with Omniscient develops around their shared ambition and mutual growth, while other spirits respond to his willingness to protect and fight alongside them 66 105 232.

Zanpakuto possess pride and may refuse, test, or betray an unsuitable wielder. Omniscient states that Zanpakuto obey strength, while Zangetsu emphasizes that a Zanpakuto without a contractor has no value 19.

• Omniscient comes to believe that Zanpakuto exist to accompany their wielders in fulfilling their dreams, rather than existing solely as tools 66.
