Background
Konoha’s forces faced a worsening situation in the Land of Grass. Captured enemy ninja reported more than 1,500 Iwagakure ninja in the region, commanded by Kitsuchi, the son of Third Tsuchikage Ōnoki. Kannabi Bridge crossed a major river nearly a hundred miles from the Land of Fire border, behind a network of enemy outposts 9 15.
By the time Minato Namikaze reached the front, Konoha had lost three strongholds in two days. Iwagakure’s numerical advantage had grown to nearly a thousand ninja, prompting Shikaku Nara to propose an operation against the bridge. Aburame Ryoma supported the plan but insisted that several squads were needed rather than one 18.
Qingye initially feared the battle because his knowledge of the original timeline included devastating Konoha casualties on the accompanying frontline battlefields. Before deployment, he enhanced his bloodline to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan and postponed his Chakra Loan repayment to restore his combat capacity 1 21.
Objectives and Deployment
| Element | Purpose or arrangement |
|---|---|
| Bridge demolition | Destroy Kannabi Bridge and withdraw immediately after completing the objective 22. |
| Diversion | Draw Iwagakure forces away from the main front by threatening their rear. Shikaku explicitly included this in the plan; Nara Shiosui recognized it as the infiltration squads’ underlying purpose 18 22. |
| Three-pronged infiltration | Kakashi’s team, Qingye’s squad, and an Ino-Shika-Cho squad approached from separate directions 22. |
| Demolition supplies | Minato distributed nine scrolls, one to each infiltrating ninja. Unfolding and throwing a scroll deployed enough explosives to destroy the bridge 22 28. |
| Minato’s role | Minato separated from the squads to fight on the main front, later returning to extract the survivors 22 31 32. |
| Operational risk | Enemy reinforcements could surround the squads deep behind Iwagakure’s lines, making escape difficult even after successful demolition 18. |
Participants
| Side / Group | Members | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Konoha command | Shikaku Nara, Minato Namikaze | Planned the operation; Minato supplied demolition scrolls, fought on the main front, and conducted extraction 18 22 31 32. |
| Root involvement | Aburame Ryoma | Advocated sending multiple squads and specifically requested Qingye’s participation 18 20. |
| Qingye’s squad | Uchiha Qingye, Yūhi Kurenai, Hyuga Himon | Reached the bridge, demolished it, and held off the surrounding reinforcements 27 28 29. |
| Kakashi’s team | Kakashi Hatake, Uchiha Obito, Nohara Rin | Diverted from the mission after Rin’s capture. Rin joined Qingye’s squad after being rescued 25 26 34. |
| Ino-Shika-Cho squad | Akimichi Dōtō, Nara Shiosui, Yamanaka Santen | Drew a large pursuing force; Qingye intervened to prevent their deaths 23. |
| Iwagakure command | Kitsuchi, also rendered as Huang Tu | Entered the bridge battle and was defeated and captured by Qingye 31 32. |
| Iwagakure interception force | Mahiru, Oishi, Hokari | Mahiru captured Rin; Oishi and Hokari attacked Kakashi and Obito after Mahiru’s death 25 26. |
| Covert manipulators | Uchiha Madara, White Zetsu, Tobi | Madara directed White Zetsu to lure reinforcements to the bridge; Tobi retrieved the severely injured Obito 25 30. |
Course of the Battle
| Phase | Events |
|---|---|
| Deployment | Minato and the nine squad members entered the Land of Grass. The three squads separated after receiving their demolition scrolls 22. |
| Ino-Shika-Cho interception | An Iwagakure sensory ninja detected the Ino-Shika-Cho squad. Roughly seventy to eighty enemies pursued them toward Qingye’s route. Rather than endanger his squad, Shiosui chose to stop and fight 23. |
| Qingye’s intervention | Qingye relieved the trapped squad and covered its escape. His group led pursuing enemies toward Madara’s hidden cave, where explosives collapsed the terrain and Madara killed intruders 23 24 25. |
| Madara escalates the operation | Madara ordered multiple White Zetsu to impersonate Konoha ninja and lure nearby Iwagakure forces toward Kannabi Bridge. He intended the resulting crisis to stimulate Qingye’s Sharingan 25. |
| Rin’s rescue | Qingye killed Mahiru with a single Sword Leap Flame strike and rescued Rin. She left a message for Kakashi and Obito before accompanying Qingye’s squad toward the bridge 25 26. |
| Kakashi and Obito’s ambush | Oishi’s invisible attack cut Kakashi’s left eye as he pushed Obito out of danger. Obito awakened his Sharingan, killed the stealth attacker, and later saved Kakashi from another attack, becoming buried beneath rubble 26 32. |
| Final outpost and intelligence | Qingye subdued the last outpost with genjutsu. Interrogation revealed at least a hundred defenders at the bridge, including at least two jonin, with possible supply escorts on the opposite bank 27. |
| Assault and demolition | After a sensory ninja detected the approaching squad, Qingye opened with Majestic Fire Annihilation. He overwhelmed the defenders, reached the bridge, and deployed a scroll containing a net of hundreds of Explosive Tags. The bridge collapsed into the river 27 28. |
| Encirclement | Reinforcements arrived before the squad could escape. Qingye established a defensive position, assigned his companions to block river crossings, and used amplified Fire Style and Shadow Clones against the other approaches 28 29. |
| Lightning bombardment | Qingye harnessed the thunderclouds above the battlefield with Lightning Blade: Fang, repeatedly striking enemy formations. The cloud coverage extended over ten miles 30 31. |
| Kitsuchi’s defeat | Kitsuchi attempted to crush Qingye with Earth Mountain Technique, then attacked from underground. Himon warned Qingye, who evaded the attack, pierced Kitsuchi’s abdomen with Chidori, and knocked him unconscious 31. |
| Extraction | With Kitsuchi defeated, the remaining Iwagakure ninja fled. Minato arrived, retrieved the surviving squads with Flying Thunder God, and brought them and the captive commander back to camp 32. |
Battlefield Tactics
Riverbank Defense
- The Niranjana River was approximately two hundred meters wide at the bridge, preventing enemies from simply jumping across after its destruction 29.
- Qingye instructed his companions to use an earth wall as cover and throw Explosive Tags through openings at enemies attempting to cross the water 29.
- Himon, Kurenai, and Rin repeatedly bombarded the river, forcing back crossing attempts and generating extensive steam 29.
Mangekyo-Amplified Fire Style
- Qingye activated his left-eye Susanoo ability for double reinforcement of physical strength and ninjutsu power 29.
- Two Shadow Clones covered the upstream and downstream approaches while his main body confronted the arriving forces 29.
- Large-scale Fire Style ignited forests over several miles and forced the enemy to concentrate on defensive Earth Style formations 29.
Falling Lightning
- Lightning Blade: Fang guided repeated lightning strikes from the gathered cumulonimbus clouds; Qingye did not need to release all their energy in a single attack 30.
- The bombardment struck enemies on both banks and reinforcements approaching downstream, restricting both advance and retreat 30 31.
- Qingye shattered Kitsuchi’s protective Earth Style shield with a lightning strike before defeating him at close range 31.
Aftermath and Significance
Military Outcome
- Qingye’s killing of hundreds of Iwagakure ninja, combined with Minato’s frontline fighting, brought the previously unequal forces into approximate balance, with Konoha potentially holding the advantage 33.
- The bridge’s destruction hindered large-scale Iwagakure supply transport. After two days of rest and the arrival of reinforcements, Konoha resumed its offensive and ultimately expelled Iwagakure’s forces from the Land of Grass 37 38.
- Kitsuchi became a hostage for future negotiations. At Qingye’s suggestion, Minato agreed to place a Flying Thunder God mark on him as a deterrent against renewed conflict 32.
- Qingye’s squad received a ten-million-ryo mission reward, and his achievements substantially increased his standing among Konoha ninja 38 51 52.
- Kitsuchi’s captivity remained a diplomatic issue after the fighting. Qingye later threatened his safety by sending his cut hair to Iwagakure, prompting Ōnoki to agree to pay the ransom 80 85.
Changes to Kakashi and Obito’s Fates
- Kakashi lost his left eye without receiving Obito’s Sharingan. Obito retained both eyes, leading Qingye to anticipate the possibility of an opponent with double Kamui 32 33.
- Obito was presumed dead by Konoha, but Tobi had retrieved him alive. Minato and Kakashi later recovered a mangled body believed to be his, which was brought home and buried 30 38 49.
- Minato coordinated mission reports with Qingye to protect his students from condemnation for abandoning the objective to rescue Rin. Nevertheless, the incident leaked, and villagers accused Kakashi and Obito of failing their duties 34 38 45.
- Madara exploited those accusations during Obito’s recovery, arguing that he had no place left in Konoha and that his comrades no longer needed him 41 50.
- Minato subsequently asked Qingye to form a new team with Kakashi and Rin, extending the battle’s consequences into the Land of Sea campaign 45 46.
Influence on Qingye’s Later Ninjutsu
- Qingye noticed unexplained explosions when lightning struck the river during the battle. Investigating similar effects afterward led him to study water electrolysis 42.
- The battle’s combination of heat, water, and lightning preceded his later Infinite Explosion Ninjutsu, which used seawater electrolysis, hydrogen detonation, and expanding thunderclouds 69 70.
