Background / History

Madara survived the Battle of the End Valley by faking his death. In later years, he monitored Uchiha descendants, controlled the Third Mizukage, and prepared Obito to inherit his Moon Eye Plan. By the time Qingye encountered his operations, Madara was elderly and relied on the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to prolong his life 24 78.

Madara appears as an aged, frail man with a gaunt face 24.

Personality

Madara favors indirect manipulation over revealing himself. He judges young Uchiha by both their potential and how easily he can influence them: although Qingye impresses him, Madara prefers Obito because he considers a clever, scheming Uchiha harder to control 16 17 28.

He takes pride in his former strength, but his declining body makes prolonged combat dangerous. When Kirigakure clan heads force him to flee, he is determined to survive long enough to finish arranging Obito's succession 77.

• Uchiha Qingye / Aoya — A potential alternative successor. Madara engineers crises to stimulate Qingye's Sharingan, admires his fighting style, and later tries unsuccessfully to entice him with a solution to Mangekyō blindness 16 25 28 69 76.

Story Role / Major Arcs

• Iwagakure battlefield: Madara uses White Zetsu to monitor Uchiha candidates and draws enemies toward Qingye, hoping a life-or-death crisis will awaken his Mangekyō Sharingan. Qingye later leads pursuers to Madara's cave, where Madara kills them 16 24 25.
• Kannabi Bridge: He watches Qingye's battle through White Zetsu and has more Iwagakure ninja drawn to the bridge, while continuing his plans for Obito 25 28 30.
• Kijin Island: Speaking through the Third Mizukage, Madara offers Qingye a way around Mangekyō blindness. The attempt fails, and Qingye defeats the Mizukage's body despite Madara taking control of it 69 76.
• Final escape: Akizuki and Riya attack Madara's underground base. He escapes their assault but exhausts himself far from the Demonic Statue. After learning Obito is critically injured, he creates a clone to continue the plan and dies in a cave 76 77 78.
