Background
Kakashi displayed exceptional talent from childhood: he performed the Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu at age five, graduated from the Ninja Academy at five, and became a chūnin at six. His early accomplishments made him the benchmark against whom Uchiha Qingye measured himself. 1
He is the son of Hatake Sakumo and inherited Sakumo's White Fang short sword. Sakumo's death occurred five years before Kakashi's spar with Qingye. 19
Kakashi trained under Minato Namikaze alongside Obito and Rin. During the Kannabi Bridge operation, Obito's insistence on rescuing the captured Rin helped change Kakashi's outlook on missions and comrades. 18 26
Appearance
Kakashi is a white-haired shinobi who later wears a mask while serving in ANBU. After the Kannabi Bridge mission, his left eye is injured and kept bandaged while Minato plans to arrange a replacement. 18 32 92
- Carries Hatake Sakumo's White Fang short sword. 19
- Uses alloy leg weights during training and removes them before serious combat. 48
- Is referred to as a “white-haired masked brat” during the Land of Sea conflict. 71
Personality
Kakashi is intensely competitive and accustomed to surpassing his peers, which contributes to the arrogance Minato identifies during his fight with Qingye. He initially believes Qingye failed to react to Chidori, only to learn that Qingye deliberately passed up multiple openings. 19 20
Obito's presumed death and public criticism over the team abandoning its mission leave Kakashi burdened by guilt and self-doubt. He believes he must become stronger to protect Rin and fulfill what he sees as Obito's final request. 32 35 41
Despite his doubts, Kakashi prioritizes his comrades in decisive moments. He follows Obito to rescue Rin, pushes Obito away from an ambush, and later attempts to hold off Kirigakure ANBU so Rin can escape. 26 32 73
Abilities & Skills
Jōnin-Level Speed and Taijutsu
Kakashi is a high-speed close-range fighter capable of matching Qingye in a prolonged sword duel. He stimulates his body's cells with Lightning Release chakra to further increase his movement speed. 19
- His speed and reactions are difficult for lower-ranked ninja to follow. 19
- Minato notes that his observational ability does not always keep pace with his speed. 19
- He trains with leg weights to improve his physical performance. 46 48
Hatake Clan Swordsmanship
Kakashi fights with the White Fang short sword inherited from his father and later relies on Hatake swordsmanship when unable to use Chidori. 19 48
- Uses the White Fang short sword in his spar with Qingye. 19
- Had not yet mastered much of the Hatake clan's sword techniques during that spar. 19
- Returns to his family swordsmanship against Hōzuki Mangetsu. 48
Nature Transformations
Kakashi specializes in Lightning Release and can also use Earth and Fire Release. He possesses all five chakra natures naturally, though he has not yet learned Wind Release. 47
- Lightning Release — his primary nature and the basis of his speed enhancement and Chidori. 19 20
- Earth Release — one of the additional transformations he has mastered. 47
- Fire Release — known, but less emphasized than his Lightning and Earth Release. 47
Chidori
Kakashi develops Chidori, an A-rank Lightning Release technique that concentrates dense chakra in his palm and emits a sound like a thousand birds. 20
- The technique is powerful enough that Kakashi does not consider it suitable for a spar. 20
- Its charge is so fast that it can outpace Kakashi's visual tracking and leave him vulnerable to counterattacks. 35 92
- Qingye copies Chidori with the Sharingan and later uses it to defeat Kitsuchi, shocking Kakashi. 20 31
- Kakashi later works on a new variation emphasizing shape transformation, range, and coverage at the cost of some speed and piercing power. 92
Summoning and Tracking
Kakashi can summon Pakkun, a ninja dog used to track a distinctive plant-like scent associated with White Zetsu. 53 55 60
- Coordinates with Qingye and Pakkun to trace the source of White Zetsu surveillance. 55 60
- Uses Pakkun's reports to help narrow the search toward the Land of Frost. 60 64
Equipment
- White Fang short sword — Hatake Sakumo's inherited blade. 19
- Alloy leg weights — two ten-kilogram weights removed before combat with Hōzuki Mangetsu. 48
- Pakkun — ninja-dog summon used for scent tracking and reconnaissance. 53 55
Relationships
- Minato Namikaze — Teacher and mentor. Minato critiques Kakashi's combat awareness, supports him after Obito's presumed death, and later brings him into ANBU. 19 32 92
- Uchiha Obito — Former teammate and rival. Kakashi follows Obito to save Rin, loses his left eye while protecting him, and is devastated by Obito's presumed death. 18 26 32
- Nohara Rin — Teammate whom Kakashi repeatedly protects. He later attempts to escort her off the Land of Sea and faces Kirigakure ANBU to buy her time. 45 72 73
- Uchiha Qingye — Peer, rival, and later two-man mission partner. Qingye surpasses Kakashi during their spar, copies Chidori, and becomes the person Kakashi tries to catch up with. 19 20 31 46
- Might Guy — A companion whose straightforward belief in saving comrades contrasts with Kakashi's uncertainty over mission priorities. 41
- Pakura — Temporary ally during the Land of Sea conflict. Kakashi coordinates with her while infiltrating a Kirigakure camp to rescue Rin. 71
Story Role / Major Arcs
Kannabi Bridge
Kakashi challenges Qingye after Obito is defeated, engaging him in a high-speed sword fight. Minato observes that Qingye had opportunities to strike Kakashi but deliberately held back, exposing Kakashi's overconfidence and lack of battlefield observation. 19 20
He demonstrates Chidori to Qingye before the Kannabi Bridge operation. Qingye's Sharingan copies the technique in front of him, to Kakashi's frustration. 20
When Rin is captured, Kakashi initially hesitates because of the mission but chooses to follow Obito and rescue her, repeating Sakumo's choice to value comrades over orders. He is ambushed during the rescue attempt and suffers a severe injury to his left eye. 26 32
After Obito is buried beneath rubble and presumed dead, Kakashi blames himself and seeks to recover Obito's body for burial. 32
Recovery and Reassigned Team
Kakashi struggles with village hostility toward himself and Obito after the mission. He seeks advice from Qingye and Guy on whether he made the right choice, but remains convinced that only greater strength would have prevented the tragedy. 38 41
Minato asks Qingye to look after Kakashi and Rin because Kakashi's mental state has deteriorated. Qingye instead argues that he and Kakashi should operate as a two-jōnin team while Rin is assigned to safer rear-area medical duties. 45 46
Land of Sea Operations
Kakashi fights beside Qingye against Kirigakure forces, including Hōzuki Mangetsu. He removes his training weights and relies on Hatake swordsmanship after being unable to use Chidori. 47 48
He assists Qingye in rescuing Pakura from a Kirigakure ambush, then returns alone to Konohagakure while Qingye follows the White Zetsu trail. 55
During the conflict around Kijin Island, Kakashi infiltrates a Kirigakure camp to rescue captured Konoha medical ninja and Rin. As Rin's sealed Three-Tails becomes unstable, he attempts to hold off pursuing ANBU so she can reach the sea. 71 72 73
ANBU Service
After Minato becomes Hokage, Kakashi joins ANBU as part of Minato's effort to establish personnel he can directly command. He continues developing a Lightning Release technique intended to address Chidori's visual-tracking weakness. 92
