Background

Konoha Chūnin

Obito was a Konoha Chūnin and teammate of Kakashi Hatake and Nohara Rin. Eager to prove that he had changed since the Academy, he challenged Uchiha Qingye immediately after Qingye returned to camp. Qingye subdued him twice without difficulty, leaving Obito humiliated and unable to accept the gap between them. 17 18 19

During the Kannabi Bridge operation, Obito was confident that completing the mission would finally awaken his Sharingan and let him surpass Kakashi and Qingye. When Rin was captured, he chose to pursue her rather than prioritize the demolition mission. After Kakashi pushed him aside from an Iwagakure ambush and lost his left eye, Obito's Sharingan awakened. 22 25 26

Presumed Death and Madara's Influence

Obito was believed to have died during the operation. Kakashi and Rin intended to recover his body for burial, while Qingye realized that Kakashi's intact remaining eye meant Obito had retained both Sharingan. 32 33

Tobi recovered the critically injured Obito and delivered him to Madara. Madara exploited Obito's memories of criticism from Konoha and his fear of being replaced by Qingye, intensifying his determination to return to Rin and prove himself. 30 41 50 51

Pursuit in the Land of Sea

Enhanced by White Zetsu Tobi, Obito left the Land of Frost to find Kakashi and Rin in the Land of Sea. His altered appearance caused Rin and Kakashi to mistake him for a Kirigakure enemy; Rin attacked him rather than recognizing him. 68 73

Obito fought through Kirigakure ANBU while obsessively pursuing Kakashi and Rin. He phased through attacks with Kamui, used Susanoo for protection, and tore away an ANBU's arm with a space-time ocular technique. His fixation on reaching Rin overrode his injuries and the surrounding battle. 74

When Rin's Three-Tails Chakra went berserk, Obito attempted to reach her despite being badly injured by Qingye's Susanoo. Tobi ultimately took control of Obito's body and forced him into the sea to keep him from further harming himself. 75

Black Zetsu's Guidance

Obito later awakened at the Graveyard of Mountains with his body fully restored. Black Zetsu informed him that Madara had sacrificed himself to save him, then pressed Obito to abandon reality and inherit the Moon Eye Plan through Infinite Tsukuyomi. Obito hesitated, but Black Zetsu used Rin's failure to recognize him and Konoha's condemnation of him to deepen his despair. 81
