Background
Konoha Chūnin
Obito was a Konoha Chūnin and teammate of Kakashi Hatake and Nohara Rin. Eager to prove that he had changed since the Academy, he challenged Uchiha Qingye immediately after Qingye returned to camp. Qingye subdued him twice without difficulty, leaving Obito humiliated and unable to accept the gap between them. 17 18 19
During the Kannabi Bridge operation, Obito was confident that completing the mission would finally awaken his Sharingan and let him surpass Kakashi and Qingye. When Rin was captured, he chose to pursue her rather than prioritize the demolition mission. After Kakashi pushed him aside from an Iwagakure ambush and lost his left eye, Obito's Sharingan awakened. 22 25 26
Presumed Death and Madara's Influence
Obito was believed to have died during the operation. Kakashi and Rin intended to recover his body for burial, while Qingye realized that Kakashi's intact remaining eye meant Obito had retained both Sharingan. 32 33
Tobi recovered the critically injured Obito and delivered him to Madara. Madara exploited Obito's memories of criticism from Konoha and his fear of being replaced by Qingye, intensifying his determination to return to Rin and prove himself. 30 41 50 51
Pursuit in the Land of Sea
Enhanced by White Zetsu Tobi, Obito left the Land of Frost to find Kakashi and Rin in the Land of Sea. His altered appearance caused Rin and Kakashi to mistake him for a Kirigakure enemy; Rin attacked him rather than recognizing him. 68 73
Obito fought through Kirigakure ANBU while obsessively pursuing Kakashi and Rin. He phased through attacks with Kamui, used Susanoo for protection, and tore away an ANBU's arm with a space-time ocular technique. His fixation on reaching Rin overrode his injuries and the surrounding battle. 74
When Rin's Three-Tails Chakra went berserk, Obito attempted to reach her despite being badly injured by Qingye's Susanoo. Tobi ultimately took control of Obito's body and forced him into the sea to keep him from further harming himself. 75
Black Zetsu's Guidance
Obito later awakened at the Graveyard of Mountains with his body fully restored. Black Zetsu informed him that Madara had sacrificed himself to save him, then pressed Obito to abandon reality and inherit the Moon Eye Plan through Infinite Tsukuyomi. Obito hesitated, but Black Zetsu used Rin's failure to recognize him and Konoha's condemnation of him to deepen his despair. 81
Appearance
After his recovery, Obito is often concealed within White Zetsu material, making him appear more like a pale monster than a Konoha ninja. 49 73
- Initially wears goggles as a Konoha ninja. 17 22
- When approaching Rin in the Land of Sea, his body is wrapped in white material and his spiral mask opens to reveal a face described as half-rotted. 49
- Wears Tobi's cloak while pursuing Kakashi and Rin. 75
- His left side is constructed from White Zetsu cells and can visibly shrivel after taking Scorch Release damage. 74
Personality
Obito is intensely competitive and emotionally transparent. He seeks recognition from Rin, resents being outclassed by Qingye and Kakashi, and initially refuses to acknowledge defeat even when physically restrained. 18 19
His strongest motivation is Rin. He abandons the Kannabi Bridge mission to save her, believes she will wait for him, and later crosses the Land of Frost and battles Kirigakure ANBU solely to reach her. 25 41 68 74
Madara specifically considered Obito easier to manipulate than Qingye because of his simpler, more emotionally driven nature. After being presumed dead and replaced on Kakashi and Rin's team, Obito's longing for Rin becomes possessive and unstable. 17 50 51
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
Obito possesses both of his Sharingan, unlike the expected outcome in which Kakashi would have received one as a replacement eye. 32 33
- Awakens his Sharingan after Kakashi is injured shielding him from an Iwagakure ambush. 26
- Later possesses a documented two-tomoe Sharingan. 50
- Awakens Mangekyō Sharingan after his later trauma and conflict. 74 78
Kamui
Obito's Mangekyō ocular technique grants him space-time abilities that make his body difficult to attack and allow him to maim targets at range. 74
- Phases his body through Pakura's remotely controlled Scorch Release fireballs. 74
- Uses an ocular technique to tear an ANBU's arm and much of the shoulder into another dimension. 74
- His phasing does not prevent all damage when he is unable to activate it in time; a Scorch Release fireball pierces and damages his White Zetsu-built body. 74
Susanoo
Obito manifests a blue, rib-like initial Susanoo armor during his fight with Kirigakure ANBU. 74
- Blocks Scorch Release fireballs that had continued to pursue him through the battlefield. 74
- Deflects sword strikes and ninjutsu from Kirigakure ANBU. 74
- Its initial form leaves an opening above the armor, which Pakura exploits by dropping a fireball through the gap. 74
White Zetsu Augmentation
Tobi's White Zetsu body reinforces Obito physically and can directly control him when necessary. 68 75
- Allows Obito to leave the Graveyard of Mountains and travel toward the Land of Sea despite the harsh winter conditions. 68
- Replaces part of his body with White Zetsu cells. 68 74
- Takes control of Obito's body and withdraws him when his pursuit of Rin becomes self-destructive. 75
