Background

Obito was believed to have died after Iwagakure’s Earth Release: Rock Lodging Destruction nearly crushed him during the Third Shinobi World War. His body was never recovered, and he had not yet awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan at that point. 146 443 512

His Mangekyō awakened only after he saw Kakashi pierce Rin through the chest. Madara subsequently equipped him with White Zetsu flesh and Hashirama Cells, treating him as a useful successor rather than an equal. 453 512

As the Masked Man, Obito’s identity was obscured by his single visible Sharingan and use of Kamui. Tobirama eventually reasoned that the supposed “Madara” was likely Obito, citing the connection between Obito’s missing eye and Kakashi’s Sharingan. 146

During the Nine-Tails attack, the young Shisui Uchiha used Kotoamatsukami to uncover Obito’s plans. Shisui then implanted a Transcription Seal containing a future Kotoamatsukami command into Obito’s eye and erased his memory of the encounter. 689

Rin’s body later disappeared after her death. Madara reveals that a miniature Ten-Tails attempted to consume her corpse, leaving the real body trapped within a tree while producing a Divine Tree Person that merely resembles Rin. 681 685

Appearance

Obito commonly conceals his identity behind a mask, exposing only one Sharingan. When Kakashi forcibly extracts him from Kamui Space, his face is revealed to be heavily disfigured. 439

Personality

As a child, Obito was remembered as a warm-hearted boy who helped lost kittens and elderly women. The contrast between this reputation and the Masked Man’s later conduct leaves the original Akatsuki members unable to reconcile the two identities. 457

His adult identity is defined by fixation, self-deception, and calculated manipulation. He initially insists that the dream world is real and pursues Infinite Tsukuyomi as an escape from reality, while his nightmares and continued fixation on Rin reveal that his attachments never disappeared. 410 411 412

Obito is capable of patience and long-term planning, but repeatedly underestimates opponents or acts carelessly once events seem favorable. His encounter with Isshiki forces him to recognize that Infinite Tsukuyomi alone cannot resolve the threats beyond the shinobi world. 409 618

Within Naruto’s Engraved Tsukuyomi world, Obito adopts the persona of a selfless protector in order to exploit Naruto, Minato, and the Jinchūriki. Once Kushina threatens to remove his Sharingan, he discards this façade and openly uses Isshiki as a weapon to force Konoha’s cooperation. 653 655 659

Even after gaining overwhelming power, Obito remains dependent on others for strategic analysis. He admits that his intelligence has not kept pace with his Six Paths-level physique and takes particular pleasure in making subordinates and captives solve problems for him. 694 703

His Heavenly Spear is tied to his emotional state: his power and Ten-Tails stability are greatest while he remains confident and joyful, but this also leaves him prone to the arrogance of a “proud army.” 710
