Background
Obito was believed to have died after Iwagakure’s Earth Release: Rock Lodging Destruction nearly crushed him during the Third Shinobi World War. His body was never recovered, and he had not yet awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan at that point. 146 443 512
His Mangekyō awakened only after he saw Kakashi pierce Rin through the chest. Madara subsequently equipped him with White Zetsu flesh and Hashirama Cells, treating him as a useful successor rather than an equal. 453 512
As the Masked Man, Obito’s identity was obscured by his single visible Sharingan and use of Kamui. Tobirama eventually reasoned that the supposed “Madara” was likely Obito, citing the connection between Obito’s missing eye and Kakashi’s Sharingan. 146
Appearance
Obito commonly conceals his identity behind a mask, exposing only one Sharingan. When Kakashi forcibly extracts him from Kamui Space, his face is revealed to be heavily disfigured. 439
- His body incorporates White Zetsu matter and Hashirama Cells. 453 618
- His modified body dulls, but does not eliminate, his perception of pain. 460
- In Six Paths Mode, he appears unnaturally pale. 657
Personality
As a child, Obito was remembered as a warm-hearted boy who helped lost kittens and elderly women. The contrast between this reputation and the Masked Man’s later conduct leaves the original Akatsuki members unable to reconcile the two identities. 457
His adult identity is defined by fixation, self-deception, and calculated manipulation. He initially insists that the dream world is real and pursues Infinite Tsukuyomi as an escape from reality, while his nightmares and continued fixation on Rin reveal that his attachments never disappeared. 410 411 412
Obito is capable of patience and long-term planning, but repeatedly underestimates opponents or acts carelessly once events seem favorable. His encounter with Isshiki forces him to recognize that Infinite Tsukuyomi alone cannot resolve the threats beyond the shinobi world. 409 618
Abilities & Skills
Mangekyō Sharingan: Kamui
Obito’s Mangekyō technique grants access to Kamui Space and forms a direct connection with Kakashi’s corresponding eye.
- Transfers himself and others through Kamui Space. 412 438
- Absorbs or retrieves matter through spatial distortion. 411
- Can receive Kakashi’s Sage Mode Chakra through the link between their paired Sharingan, even while his own Chakra is restricted. 512
- Kamui inflicts spatial damage rather than ordinary ninjutsu damage, allowing it to threaten targets with immunity to ninjutsu. 363
- His offensive and defensive uses are split between the paired eyes; Kakashi demonstrates the offensive extraction side more precisely. 439
Hollowfication
Hollowfication lets Obito phase his body through attacks by transferring affected portions through Kamui.
- Initially manifested passively during his Mangekyō awakening and rampage. 559
- Later functions as both a maintained state and an active technique, with Obito able to become tangible at will. 559
- Has a five-minute limitation and requires him to become tangible for teleportation. 439
- Cannot operate automatically while he is inside Kamui Space; manual activation leaves him vulnerable to attacks faster than his reactions. 618
- Isshiki’s assault strips him of this crucial defensive ability. 618
Hashirama Cells and White Zetsu Integration
Madara’s modifications grant Obito exceptional survivability and Chakra-related advantages.
- His body contains White Zetsu flesh infused with Hashirama Cells. 453
- He can remain alive briefly after a pierced heart due to these modifications. 618
- Madara considers the cells valuable enough to infiltrate Obito’s prison and attempt to extract them for himself. 452 453
Genjutsu and Deception
Obito combines Uchiha genjutsu with careful manipulation of others’ assumptions.
- Madara concludes that Obito used genjutsu on him to obtain information concerning Infinite Tsukuyomi and the Ten-Tails’ Jinchūriki. 443
- He repeatedly adopts a helpless or righteous façade to direct stronger allies toward his own objectives. 653 655 657
- He uses Naruto’s guilt and Minato’s concern for the shinobi world to secure cooperation in gathering Tailed Beasts. 653 655
Fourth Power Variants
The Engraved Tsukuyomi settings assign additional rule-based powers to Uchiha.
- Future Vision — In one world, Obito foresees the future opponents of imminent battles and tries to save Minato from his predicted fate. 606
- Kamui Space enhancement — In Naruto’s Engraved Tsukuyomi world, Obito gains amplified attributes within Kamui Space and can permanently obtain abilities from enemies he kills there. 611
Six Paths Power
After collecting Tailed Beasts and gaining control of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, Obito becomes the second Sage of Six Paths.
- Extracts Tailed Beasts while presenting himself as a protector against the Ōtsutsuki Clan. 653
- Uses Black Zetsu’s grafted half to bypass the usual Rinnegan and willpower requirements for controlling the Demonic Statue. 657
- Retains Kamui as an escape option even after entering Six Paths Mode. 659
Relationships
- Kakashi Hatake — Former comrade and holder of Obito’s paired Sharingan. Obito alternates between concern, resentment, and plans to reclaim Kakashi’s eye; their shared Mangekyō link remains central to both their abilities. 78 439 512 559
- Nohara Rin — Obito’s enduring emotional fixation. Witnessing her death at Kakashi’s hand awakens his Mangekyō Sharingan. 411 512
- Madara Uchiha — Benefactor, manipulator, and later rival. Madara gave Obito Hashirama Cells, regards him as a tool, and later attempts to take those cells back. 447 452 453 454
- White Zetsu — Companion and support figure who provides intelligence, fuses with Obito for travel, and assists his actions in Kamui Space. 411 412
- Black Zetsu — Possesses Obito after Isshiki’s attack to keep him alive and preserve its own lucidity, while subtly influencing his thoughts about Kaguya. 618
- Minato Namikaze — Obito’s former teacher. Obito first empathizes with Minato’s pain, then later deceives him into aiding the Tailed Beast-gathering plan. 410 653 655
- Naruto Uzumaki — Initially manipulated through trust in Obito’s heroic façade; later witnesses Obito abandon that façade after the Isshiki crisis escalates. 653 655 659
- Original Akatsuki members — Reject Obito’s attempt to recruit them for Infinite Tsukuyomi and punish him after he is exposed. 457 461
Story Role / Major Arcs

Second Sage of Six Paths
- In Naruto’s Engraved Tsukuyomi world, Obito works alongside Naruto, encounters Isshiki, loses Hollowfication, and begins reconsidering the limits of Infinite Tsukuyomi. 617 618

- Obito becomes the second Sage of Six Paths, releases Isshiki near Konoha, and falsely claims Kamui malfunctioned. 657
- When Kushina proposes removing his Sharingan to prevent further releases, Obito abandons his heroic façade and admits that he deliberately freed Isshiki to force Konoha into fighting beside him. 659
