Background / History
Naruto begins as a member of Kakashi Hatake's team alongside Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno. During the Land of Waves mission, he impulsively charges Shirozumi before Kakashi can finish issuing orders, forcing Sasuke to protect him from Kisame 9. When their mission to escort Tazuna becomes dangerous, he agrees with his teammates to continue rather than abandon it 10.
During the Chūnin Exams, Sakura considers withdrawing because she fears holding Naruto back and ruining his dream. Naruto's response inspires her to remain in the exam and resolve to become stronger 50.
Urashiki Ōtsutsuki targets Naruto for the Nine-Tails' Chakra, but fails to steal it because of a sealing technique and instead abducts Naruto 123. Sasuke rescues him by exchanging places with him through Amenotejikara, accepting capture in Naruto's place 124.
Naruto later commits himself to Sage Mode training. Although the Nine-Tails offers him power immediately, Naruto refuses to abandon Sage Art; he insists on mastering both powers to protect those he loves. The Nine-Tails ultimately agrees to assist him because of the Ōtsutsuki threat 271.
While fighting Kimimaro, Naruto and the Nine-Tails cooperate on a dangerous escape plan: Kurama retracts its Chakra to create an opening, while Naruto uses a kunai and wire to pull himself out of range. The crisis leads to the appearance of Minato Namikaze within Naruto's mental space, and Minato subsequently uses Flying Thunder God to evacuate Naruto 300 302.
After Sasuke's power rapidly advances to the Rinnegan, Jiraiya takes Naruto away for further training. Jiraiya identifies Naruto's route to catching up as communication with all nine Tailed Beasts through the Nine-Tails' power 465.
As Naruto begins promoting Sage Mode internationally, he discovers that Kurama and the other Tailed Beasts had concealed their ability to cultivate Sage Mode. Rōshi and the Four-Tails' successful Sage Mode cultivation exposes this deception and shocks Naruto 467 507.
Kakashi, Kushina, and Kurama later arrange to alter Naruto's personality through Engraved Tsukuyomi. Within that Genjutsu World, Naruto experiences an alternate Konoha in which his parents are alive, encounters the Sage of Six Paths, and becomes embroiled in a conflict involving Ōtsutsuki Isshiki, Obito, his own dark side, and the Sage's sacred relics 577 578 580 615 630.
Personality
Naruto is determined, impulsive, and often mischievous. He and Konohamaru attempt to use Shirozumi as a training target while disguised through Transformation Jutsu, reflecting their shared taste for pranks 46.
He is quick to act when companions are endangered. During the Land of Waves mission, he rushes at Shirozumi immediately after deciding to confront an apparent enemy, despite Kakashi's attempt to direct Team Seven 9.
He becomes increasingly tactical with experience. He exploits Kakashi's personal history by transforming into seductive versions of Minato Namikaze and Uchiha Obito, distracting his teacher long enough to take lottery tickets 156. Against Kushina's Impure World Reincarnation body, he recognizes that direct attacks are ineffective and instead chooses a mental attack plan 350. He also follows Kurama's advice to create distance and prepare Sage Mode while confronting Shirozumi's Crimson King 341.
Despite his casual behavior, Naruto accepts responsibility for the damage caused by his Nine-Tails transformation and agrees to help Tamaki clean it up without hesitation 479. He also seeks to share Sage Mode beyond Konoha in the interests of peace and friendship between villages 491.
Within the Engraved Tsukuyomi World, Naruto recognizes that his prior promotion of Sage Mode had unintended consequences and chooses a mission to help the wider world rather than protect only himself 608. However, he remains exceptionally trusting and forgiving, even lending Sage Mode Chakra to his hostile dark side in the belief that they share the same body 629.
Appearance
Naruto is a blond shinobi and the host of the Nine-Tails.
- Can enter Sage Mode through an unconventional “take-off to sleep” preparation method 271 382.
- Sage Mode gives him toad-like eyes and orange pigmentation around his eyes 322.
- Uses Nine-Tails Chakra Mode in combat and training 334 348.
- Is frequently associated with Shadow Clones, Rasengan, and transformation-based techniques 156 297 350.
- In the Engraved Tsukuyomi World, his body and abilities differ from his real-world state, allowing unusually rapid Sage Mode activation but also causing unstable changes in his form 587 612.
Abilities & Skills
Sage Mode
Naruto trains at Mount Myōboku and develops an unorthodox but efficient path into Sage Mode.
- Initially enters Sage Mode only briefly after discovering a shortcut 273.
- Uses Shadow Clones to synchronize memories and sensations, reducing his activation time to 50 seconds 273.
- Briefly activates Sage Mode in battle after exposure to Sasuke's Chidori Stream, but cannot sustain it because of his emotional condition 322.
- His shortcut is difficult to explain; a Mount Myōboku toad provides the technical instruction to Kakashi and Konohamaru instead 480.
- Traditional Sage Mode requires balancing Natural Energy, mental energy, and personal Chakra; failure risks Natural Energy erosion and transformation into a toad statue 480.
- The Tailed Beasts secretly interfere when he attempts to use the traditional method, ensuring that he continues relying on his shortcut 467 474.
- He later writes Naruto's Sage Mode Secret Teachings to distribute his method throughout the Shinobi World 489.
- In the Engraved Tsukuyomi World, he can gather Natural Energy and enter Sage Mode far more quickly because his altered body lacks his usual physical advantages and requirements 612.
- His Sage Mode remains usable within Kamui Space despite a curse that otherwise prevents his usual preparation method 613.
Nine-Tails Chakra
As the Nine-Tails Jinchūriki, Naruto can draw on Kurama's Chakra, though their cooperation is not always consistent.
- Refuses to rely solely on the Nine-Tails' immediate power, choosing to cultivate Sage Mode as well 271.
- Reconciles with Kurama, who reveals his name and lends Naruto power to stop Sasuke 323.
- Reaches peak stats with Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, but recognizes he still needs more techniques and skill development 334.
- Can sense malice while using Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, though this sense does not reveal Shirozumi's movements during their speed test 340.
- Cannot access Kurama's power while separated from the Nine-Tails in the Genjutsu World 382.
- Has not mastered the Tailed Beast Bomb by the time his Shadow Clones revolt 346.
- Uses Kurama's cooperation to retract his Chakra cloak instantly and escape Kimimaro's attack range 300.
- Learns that Kurama deceived him about Kushina being a Chakra thief and manipulated him into attacking her 351.
- Kurama and the other Tailed Beasts later attempt to limit Naruto's Sage Mode development out of fear of the Great Toad Sage's prophecy 467 474.
Six Paths Yang Power
During the Engraved Tsukuyomi World conflict, Naruto becomes connected to the Sage of Six Paths' power.
- The Sage of Six Paths contacts him through Engraved Tsukuyomi because Naruto has gathered the Tailed Beasts' Chakra and fulfills conditions associated with the Child of Prophecy 580.
- Naruto distrusts the Sage's offer of power, but the Sage forcibly implants Six Paths Yang Power into him with the Six Paths Staff 633.
- While bound to the Sage's sacred relics, Naruto absorbs residual Chakra from the Nine Tailed Beasts contained within the Sage's remains 634.
- These developments occur within the Engraved Tsukuyomi World and are distinct from Naruto's ordinary real-world power progression 633 634.
Shadow Clone Technique
Shadow Clones are Naruto's signature tool for combat, training, and Sage Mode preparation.
- Uses a single clone in his challenge against Kakashi, surprising him with a more measured approach 156.
- Uses Multiple Shadow Clones and ninja tools to confuse Kimimaro after being overpowered 297.
- Creates a swarm of clones for cover against Kushina and uses them to pursue a mental-attack strategy 348.
- Coordinates a clone to launch Toad Oil Spray before following with a Super Great Ball Rasengan 350.
- Sustaining excessive numbers of clones causes fatigue; the clones eventually rebel and force him into Sage Mode preparation 346.
- Uses Shadow Clones to fill the Sage of Six Paths' mental space and restrict his movement, though even thousands of clones cannot harm the Sage 632.
- Learns that the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique is itself a form of Space-Time Ninjutsu 632.
Rasengan and Wind Release
Naruto uses Rasengan-based attacks and seeks to expand them into stronger techniques.
- Defeats Kushina's Impure World Reincarnation body with a Super Great Ball Rasengan following Toad Oil Spray 350.
- Begins trying to develop Rasenshuriken while observing Kakashi and Konohamaru's Sage Mode work 486.
Transformation Jutsu
Naruto uses transformations for deception, distraction, and humiliation.
- Employs transformations based on Minato and Obito to exploit Kakashi's emotional vulnerabilities 156.
- Uses disguise alongside Konohamaru during their attempt to approach Shirozumi 46.
- Uses Six Paths: Seduction Jutsu through Boruto's Shadow Clones as part of the rescue from Urashiki 124.
- Transforms into Shirozumi's likeness while fighting Kushina, using his clones as cover against her Nine-Tails Chakra Mode 348.
Combat Strategy and Sensory Skills
Naruto increasingly relies on Kurama, Sage Mode, and Shadow Clones to compensate for his impulsiveness.
- Coordinates directly with Kurama to create an escape opening against Kimimaro rather than attempting to overpower him 300.
- Uses the combined sensory abilities of Sage Mode and Nine-Tails Chakra Mode to attempt to track Shirozumi during their Crimson King test 341.
- Uses Sage Mode Chakra sensing in the Engraved Tsukuyomi World to locate Obito 612.
- Receives a system-granted ability to observe bullying values after choosing to aid the world in the Engraved Tsukuyomi World 608.
Equipment / Items
- Bottle-kun — a unique ninja tool discovered in an Amegakure pharmacy that may help Naruto enter Sage Mode faster 296.
- Toad oil sealed in the Eight Trigrams Seal — used as part of his plan against Kushina's Impure World Reincarnation body 350.
- Naruto's Sage Mode Secret Teachings — his completed manual for teaching Sage Mode across the Shinobi World 489.
Relationships
- Kurama / Nine-Tails — Naruto's Tailed Beast partner. Their relationship develops from suspicion into cooperation, with Kurama revealing his name and aiding Naruto in battle; however, Kurama also deceives Naruto about Kushina and covertly seeks to restrict Naruto's Sage Mode growth 271 323 351 467 474.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Naruto's best friend and rival. Sasuke rescues Naruto from Urashiki, protects his home through defensive preparations against Tobi, and repeatedly prioritizes Naruto's safety 124 431 465.
- Jiraiya — Naruto's mentor, who brings him to Konoha for strength training and directs him toward the power of all nine Tailed Beasts. He later identifies Naruto's Sage Mode shortcut as a technique that should be spread to resist the Ōtsutsuki 465 470.
- Kakashi Hatake — Naruto's teacher and later Sage Mode student. Naruto defeats him through an emotionally targeted transformation strategy and subsequently teaches him Sage Mode; Kakashi later helps arrange the Engraved Tsukuyomi plan intended to change Naruto's future 156 480 577.
- Konohamaru Sarutobi — Naruto's friend, fellow prankster, and Sage Mode student 46 480.
- Kushina Uzumaki — Naruto's mother. Their reunion is initially tense because Naruto mistakes her for an enemy, but she shows patience and concern for him. Naruto later learns that Kurama deceived him about her identity and nevertheless continues to defend Kurama 346 347 351 352.
- Minato Namikaze — Naruto's father. Minato appears in Naruto's mental space during the Kimimaro crisis and uses Flying Thunder God to save him; Naruto later confirms his parentage through Shirozumi 300 302 351.
- Sakura Haruno — Naruto's teammate. His words motivate Sakura to remain in the Chūnin Exams and work toward becoming stronger 50.
- Gaara — A close friend who treats Naruto as an equal; the two share a playful, brotherly dynamic. Naruto later spends a day assisting Gaara's Sage Mode training, while Temari comes to suspect that Gaara's feelings for Naruto are deeper than friendship 527 532 533.
- Killer B — A fellow Jinchūriki who admires Naruto and assists his group during the Sage Mode dissemination journey. In the Engraved Tsukuyomi World, he also reveals information about Minato and Naruto's connection to the Eight-Tails 379 491 619.
- Rōshi — A fellow Jinchūriki who demonstrates Sage Mode and offers to help Naruto train. Rōshi's successful joint cultivation with the Four-Tails reveals that Tailed Beasts can use Sage Mode, to Naruto's alarm 507 509.
- Shirozumi — Naruto initially confronts Shirozumi during the Land of Waves mission, later uses Shirozumi's image in battle, and tests his speed against Crimson King with Kurama's tactical support 9 340 348. Within the Engraved Tsukuyomi World, Naruto seeks Shirozumi's advice after realizing the consequences of his actions 608.
- Uchiha Obito / Tobi — Tobi attempts to abduct Naruto from his cottage but is driven off by Naruto's defenses and the Senju brothers 431 432. Within the Engraved Tsukuyomi World, Naruto cooperates with an alternate Obito against greater threats, though Naruto's dark side later exploits Obito's abilities for mass Chakra absorption 613 623.
- Sage of Six Paths — The Sage contacts Naruto through Engraved Tsukuyomi to stop Kaguya's revival, but their relationship is marked by distrust after the Sage forcibly grants Naruto Six Paths Yang Power 580 633.
