Background / History
Kate grew up hearing stories of Karl Black and became one of his most fervent believers. By his fifties, he remained emotionally invested in Black’s legacy; when Karl Black’s statue appeared to blink, Kate excitedly insisted that he had seen it move, prompting Adeph to reprimand him for losing composure. 17
Kate is Adeph’s student and a Reshaper, meaning memories carried in his soul from a previous life allow him to advance faster than an ordinary Awakened One. 17 46 He holds the title of Light Servant, has gained access to the second floor of the Sanctuary, and manages several large companies outside the Void Arts Space. 22 35
After Sean covertly uses Karl Black’s statue to request alchemical materials, Kate volunteers to serve as the statue’s permanent messenger and personally delivers a suitcase of materials to an abandoned factory in Old Sigel City. There, he mistakes Sean for a possible enemy before learning that both were directed there by “Lord Black.” 18 22
Sean’s declaration that The Moon and the Knight preserves Karl Black’s legacy convinces Kate to protect the upcoming book signing. Kate regards Sean as a fellow believer and commits to guarding him despite the danger posed by Quill and the Witch Hunters. 22 23
Appearance
Kate is a middle-aged man in his fifties. In public operations, he disguises himself carefully, but his bearing and magical presence make him difficult to mistake for an ordinary person. 17 22 34
- Wore sunglasses, a scarf, and a rustic cowboy-style jacket while delivering materials to Sean. 22
- Concealed himself among police officers during the Old Sigel City operation. 34
- When using light magic, appears to be bathed in light “like a giant.” 34
- His aura is comparable to that of a Tier Five Wizard and can pressure an encircling force before combat begins. 34
Personality
Kate is intensely devout toward Karl Black. He regards service to Black as an honor rather than a transaction, eagerly volunteers for duties, and is willing to abandon other obligations when Black’s perceived interests are at stake. 18 23
His reverence can make him excitable and childlike around Karl Black’s legacy, in contrast to the controlled, cold persona he adopts in combat. Adeph specifically criticizes Kate for struggling to remain “steady” when the statue moves. 17
Kate is direct, proud, and confident in the overwhelming difference between his power and that of weaker Wizards. He can be blunt toward strangers, dismissive of Charles, and ruthless toward enemies, but is notably approachable with Sean, whom he considers a comrade serving Lord Black. 22 34 35
