Background
Sukuna was originally human, but gradually transformed into a curse-like being as his power increased. A millennium before the novel's present, he preserved himself through twenty finger Cursed Objects; his mummified original body also remained sealed within a major barrier. 58 59 129 130
Yuji Itadori became Sukuna's first modern vessel by swallowing one of his fingers. Sukuna initially failed to retain control because Yuji could suppress him, and his offer to help seize Yuji's body was mocked by Shinsuke Zenin. 58 59 He later exploited Yuji's unconsciousness and binding vow to take over temporarily, but Shinsuke repeatedly interrupted his plans, expelled him from Yuji's body once, and defeated him during the Shibuya Incident. 64 65 91 93
Sukuna eventually invoked the binding-vow phrase “Kihaku,” separated one of Yuji's fingers into a Cursed Object, and force-fed it to Megumi Fushiguro. This transferred Sukuna into Megumi's body and granted him access to the Ten Shadows Technique. 124 Although he used Megumi's shikigami and domain to fight Shinsuke, he was defeated again and agreed to relinquish Megumi's body after three days. 127 129
After obtaining Tengen's body, Sukuna used Tengen's authority over the Culling Game to assimilate non-sorcerers' Cursed Energy. The resulting evolution made him vastly stronger and exceptionally difficult to kill, but he was ultimately overwhelmed by Shinsuke Zenin's fully opened Eight Gates and a coordinated final attack from Toji Fushiguro. 135 141 145 147
Appearance
Sukuna's appearance changes according to his vessel and degree of reincarnation. His incarnated form is marked by black tattoos and predatory features, while his evolved Tengen form becomes enormous and inhuman. 58 141
- In Yuji Itadori's body, he manifests black markings across the skin and pointed fingernails. 58
- He is described as having four arms and two faces in his established King of Curses form. 59
- After absorbing massive amounts of Cursed Energy through Tengen's body, he develops two independent faces and six elongated arms, towering over a twenty-story building. 141
- His evolved body can be rebuilt from Cursed Energy even after self-destruction, provided his head remains intact. 144
Personality
Sukuna is arrogant, impulsive, and openly contemptuous of both sorcerers and Cursed Spirits. He treats violence as entertainment, kills according to his own whims, and resents being treated as anything less than the strongest being present. 60 138
He values strength above morality or companionship. Sukuna considers attachment a weakness, mocks those burdened by responsibility, and dismisses love as meaningless. 126 138 Even so, he recognizes powerful opponents: Shinsuke Zenin, Satoru Gojo, and Kashimo Hajime all earn his interest because they can challenge or amuse him. 91 138 144
Sukuna is also calculating when his interests are at stake. He selected Megumi for the Ten Shadows Technique, used Yuji's binding vow to engineer a vessel transfer, and sought Tengen's body to evolve beyond the limits of ordinary sorcerers. 124 127 130
Abilities & Skills
Incarnation and Vessel Possession
Sukuna exists through finger Cursed Objects and can manifest through compatible vessels.
- Yuji became his vessel after consuming a finger, though Yuji could normally suppress Sukuna's consciousness. 58 60
- He used the binding-vow trigger “Kihaku” to gain one minute of control over Yuji's body. 124
- He converted Yuji's little finger into a new Cursed Object, then forced Megumi to consume it and transferred to Megumi's body. 124
- Yuji's control, Shinsuke's intervention, and damage to the vessel can restrict Sukuna's ability to act freely. 60 64 93
Cursed Energy and Reverse Cursed Technique
Sukuna possesses immense Cursed Energy reserves and highly advanced regeneration.
- He can restore lost limbs, organs, and severe bodily damage through Reverse Cursed Technique. 64 139
- He regenerated after being reduced to only his head by absorbing Cursed Energy, reconstructing his body with Barrier Techniques and Reverse Cursed Technique. 144
- After taking Tengen's body, he could recover from domain-related burnout so quickly that it was nearly negligible. 137
- His super-evolved state grants enormous reserves but threatens his self-control when he absorbs too much external Cursed Energy. 141
Slashing Techniques
Sukuna employs invisible and high-output slashes in both ranged combat and close quarters.
- He can launch rapid slashes capable of destroying buildings and controlling an opponent's movement. 88
- Scythe produces grid-like slashes that seal off escape routes and can cut through space. 92 139
- His evolved form can casually create kilometer-long ravines with a single massive slash. 142
- Shinsuke Zenin's exceptional durability and mobility allow him to endure or evade attacks that would otherwise be fatal. 91 92
Flame Arrow
Sukuna can form and fire a golden-red flame arrow.
- The projectile generates enough heat to visibly warp nearby space. 92
- Shinsuke countered it by crushing it with an air cannon before it could connect. 92
Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine
Malevolent Shrine is Sukuna's barrierless Domain Expansion, manifested directly into open space rather than enclosed by a conventional barrier. 91
- Within its range, targets with Cursed Energy are struck by Cleave, while targets without Cursed Energy are struck by Scythe. 91
- Its sure-hit slashes are continuous and nearly impossible to evade inside the domain. 91
- In Shibuya, Sukuna compressed its range to 150 meters to increase the power and speed of its slashes. 91
- After evolving through Tengen, he expanded Malevolent Shrine over a much larger area and used it repeatedly in domain clashes. 136 137
Ten Shadows Technique
While inhabiting Megumi Fushiguro's body, Sukuna wielded the Ten Shadows Technique with far greater scale and flexibility than Megumi had displayed. 125 127
- Summoned enlarged versions of Nue, Divine Dogs, Rabbit Escape, Max Elephant, and other shikigami. 125 126
- Expanded the incomplete Chimera Shadow Garden to flood the battlefield with shadows and summon multiple shikigami at once. 127
- Summoned Mahoraga and fused remaining shikigami into Chimera–Jaw Spit and Chimera–Nue. 127 128
- His shikigami were still destroyed by Shinsuke Zenin, who treated Sukuna's use of the technique as a demonstration of Megumi's potential. 128
Tengen Assimilation
Sukuna used Tengen's body to evolve into an entity beyond his original state.
- He gained Tengen's immortality Cursed Technique and authority over the Culling Game's systems. 135
- He assimilated non-sorcerers' Cursed Energy without fully assimilating their bodies, concentrating the power within himself. 141
- The transformation created a giant six-armed form with overwhelming physical strength, Cursed Energy output, and regeneration. 141 144
- Despite this evolution, he was defeated after Shinsuke opened all Eight Gates and struck him with the final Evening Elephant attack. 145 147
