Background / History

Maki was born into the Zenin Family with Cursed Energy so weak that she could not see Cursed Spirits. During childhood testing, clan members dismissed her as useless and argued that she should be expelled; she silently endured the ridicule while clenching her fists. 3

Her outlook changed after meeting Shinsuke Zenin, a relative without Cursed Energy whom the clan nevertheless feared. Maki directly asked why everyone was afraid of him, receiving the answer: they feared death. She began to see strength as the way to overturn the clan's judgment. 4

After initially fearing Shinsuke as a “monster,” Maki returned to ask him for training. She persisted through his refusal, bowing and requesting to become his disciple. Shinsuke set a condition: she had to independently exorcise a Grade 2 Cursed Spirit before he would formally teach her. 11 12

Shinsuke later began training her in weapon use. Over the next five years, Maki developed enough skill to exorcise Grade 3 Cursed Spirits independently. 31 37

When her progress reached a bottleneck, Maki left the Zenin Family for Tokyo Jujutsu High without informing Mai. Shinsuke entrusted her with the Special Grade Cursed Tool Play Cloud, though he required her to complete their original Grade 2 assessment using ordinary Cursed Tools. 42 43
