Background

Madara was the Uchiha Clan’s former Great Clan Leader, a title uniquely used by the clan for him. He was one of Konohagakure’s founders and had once stood alongside Senju Hashirama, though their conflict eventually culminated in a battle in which Madara was believed dead and Hashirama was gravely wounded. 10 153

After surviving, Madara withdrew to the Graveyard of Mountains. He awakened the Rinnegan only after his life force had largely run dry; its immense chakra could not restore his aged, damaged body. He therefore relied on the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to inject chakra and slow his decline. 88
