Background / History
Konoha Elder and First Defeat
Danzo formerly served as a guard of Senju Tobirama. As a Konoha elder, he holds a position described as second only to the Hokage and commands Root operatives whom he painstakingly cultivated 16 17.
He enters the Uchiha compound, demands that Bai Ye release a prisoner, and orders him to surrender. The confrontation becomes a battle in which Bai Ye overwhelms his Wind Style with amplified Fire Style. When Danzo becomes distracted by Root’s losses, Bai Ye cuts his right eye; the encounter also costs him an arm 16 17 20.
Bai Ye subsequently threatens to kill Danzo unless Hiruzen Sarutobi pays one billion ryō in compensation. Hiruzen agrees, while Danzo’s injuries deepen his determination to eliminate the Uchiha Clan 19.
Intelligence Leaks and Wood Release Research
Danzo undertakes Wood Release research to counter Bai Ye’s Mangekyō Sharingan. Hiruzen urges him to accelerate the work and provides both funding and personnel, allowing the research to proceed without its previous restrictions 45 65.
Hiruzen also assigns Root to leak the Uchiha force’s movements to Sunagakure, exposing them to ambushes. Evidence later recovered from Sunagakure implicates Danzo’s organization but leaves no direct connection to Hiruzen 65 93.
After Bai Ye conquers Sunagakure, Danzo announces that the Wood Release research has succeeded. Root deploys Experimental Subject No. 13, a sealed, controlled recipient of Hashirama’s cells, in an interception force. Bai Ye defeats its wooden attacks, and the subject’s body eventually explodes into uncontrolled growth that consumes members of the attacking force 86 90 91 92.
Imprisonment and Open War
Bai Ye presents the evidence against Root to Hiruzen. Although Hiruzen knows the accusations are true—and that he ordered many of the acts himself—he publicly rebukes Danzo before questioning the evidence’s authenticity to protect him. Bai Ye responds by using the Uchiha Barrier to imprison Danzo rather than immediately killing him 96 97.
Danzo later joins Hiruzen, Koharu, and Homura in a nighttime assault on the Uchiha Clan, eager to avenge Root and the Shimura Clan’s losses. During the fighting, Bai Ye catches him in Susanoo’s hand and crushes him 102 104.
Following Hiruzen’s defeat and flight from Konoha, Danzo proposes provoking Iwagakure and Kumogakure into attacking the village. His plan is to weaken both the invaders and the Uchiha, then exploit the aftermath to reclaim Konoha. Hiruzen accepts the risk and seeks an alliance with Chiyo 110 114.
Later-World Counterpart
In the later world, Danzo uses Bai Ye’s clash with Root as a pretext to demand his capture and seize his Sharingan. He gathers the Root forces stationed in Konoha near the Hokage’s office, revealing a force nearly comparable to Tsunade’s Anbu 154 156.
After Bai Ye kills his guards and remaining operatives, Danzo unveils his transplanted arm and eyes. He employs Izanagi, a chakra seal, Wind Style, his Baku summon, and genjutsu, but none succeeds in stopping Bai Ye. Tsunade refuses to rescue him after discovering his stolen kekkei genkai 157 158 159 160.
With his arm’s Sharingan exhausted and both allied elders dead, Danzo flees into the Sarutobi compound. He falsely labels Bai Ye an invader and induces the clan’s ninjas to fight while he escapes. Bai Ye devastates the compound, catches Danzo, and confronts him as he attempts another Izanagi activation 161 162 163.
Appearance
- Original-world injuries: Bai Ye destroys his right eye and severs an arm during their early conflict 17 20.
- Later-world transplanted arm: A withered wooden limb containing several Sharingan, with Hashirama Senju’s face on the shoulder 157.
- Concealed eye: Head bandages hide an additional Sharingan until he removes them to fight Bai Ye 157.
Personality
Danzo is contemptuous of the Uchiha and repeatedly assumes that his authority, Root forces, or transplanted powers will let him defeat Bai Ye. Even after suffering major losses, he remains eager to destroy the clan and settle personal grudges 16 19 102 160.
His ambition centers on becoming Hokage. Root’s accumulated strength is explicitly described as his means of competing for that position, and his reluctance to die during the later pursuit is tied to his still-unfulfilled ambition 156 162.
His claims of acting for Konoha give way to self-preservation when he is cornered. He knowingly uses the Sarutobi Clan as expendable obstacles, then vows to avenge its destruction after abandoning its defenders 160 162 163.
Abilities & Skills
Wind Style
- His Wind Style is described as among the best in Konohagakure; Vacuum Great Ball forms a large projectile of wind 17.
- Bai Ye’s amplified Fire Style repeatedly overpowers it 17.
- In the later-world battle, a Wind Style attack passes through Bai Ye’s Kamui and strikes Danzo’s own Baku summon instead 159.
Izanagi
- Allows the later-world Danzo to return unharmed after fatal injuries, including a ruptured heart and being torn in half 158 159.
- He exploits a temporary life to place a sealing formula on Bai Ye before reviving 158.
- Its usable duration and available Sharingan are limited. His arm’s eyes eventually run out, leaving only Shisui’s eye, which he is reluctant to sacrifice 159 162.
Transplanted Sharingan and Genjutsu
- Multiple implanted Sharingan support his later-world fighting strategy 157 159.
- Shisui’s eye greatly improves his genjutsu, but Bai Ye reflects his illusion back with Genjutsu Reversal 159.
Wood Release
- Oversees research using Hashirama Senju’s cells to create controlled Wood Release subjects 65 90.
- His later-world counterpart possesses a transplanted Wood Release arm 157.
- Neither Subject No. 13’s attacks nor Danzo’s own transplanted powers overcome Bai Ye 91 160.
Chakra Sealing Technique
- Places black sealing inscriptions around and on Bai Ye to restrain him 158.
- The seal fails when Bai Ye shatters it through a direct eruption of chakra 158.
Root Command
- Directs clandestine intelligence operations, experimental deployments, and coordinated attacks 65 86 156.
- Root operatives respond immediately to his orders, including commands issued against Bai Ye in the Hokage’s presence 154 156.
Relationships
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Longtime political partner who delegates covert work to Danzo, funds his research, and protects him when evidence exposes Root’s crimes 65 96 97.
- Uchiha Bai Ye / Byakuya — Principal enemy. Bai Ye maims the original-world Danzo, dismantles his operations, and repeatedly defeats the later-world counterpart’s attempts to seize his Sharingan 17 20 92 154 159.
- Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura — Allied elders whose interests align with his. In the later world, they intervene despite anger over his secret transplants and are killed by Bai Ye 160 161.
- Tsunade — Opposes his misuse of Hashirama’s cells. Her later-world counterpart refuses to save him after discovering his stolen Wood Release and Sharingan 90 157 160.
- Aburame Torune and Yamanaka Fu — Guards of the later-world Danzo; both are killed during Bai Ye’s destruction of Root 156 157.
- Shisui Uchiha — Source of his later-world transplanted eye and enhanced genjutsu 159 162.
- Sarutobi Clan — Used by the later-world Danzo to delay Bai Ye during his escape, exposing the compound to a devastating counterattack 162 163.
Trivia
- Danzo’s pain, anger, and resentment feed Bai Ye’s Negative Energy System, meaning his opposition contributes to his enemy’s growth 17 20 37.
- The later-world passages inconsistently identify Shisui’s transplanted eye as the left eye during the genjutsu attack and the right eye during Danzo’s flight 159 162.
