Background

During the Warring States period, the Uchiha were described as the strongest ninja family, rivaled only by the Senju Clan. Their Mangekyō Sharingan wielders, particularly Madara and Izuna Uchiha, were remembered as a disaster for the Senju, whose Wood Release was considered the principal counter to Mangekyō power. 19 34 36

Following the Second Shinobi World War, the clan remained prestigious but was economically constrained by Konoha's leadership. The Security Force received no funding, leaving the clan to bear its operating costs; easy, lucrative missions were reserved for the leadership's own factions, while the Uchiha received dangerous missions with poor rewards. The clan supplemented its income through weapon sales and, under Byakuya's influence, protection-money collections. 1

History

Rise under Byakuya

Byakuya's conflict with Fugaku and Gen overturned the clan's existing leadership. Fugaku was defeated in a public confrontation, while Gen was detained after his genjutsu was reflected back at him. By Chapter 15, outside clans recognized Byakuya as the figure directing the Uchiha Clan. 6 7 15

The clan then used the Security Force to close businesses across Konohagakure and extract protection fees. The campaign provoked Ino-Shika-Cho and Konoha's leadership, but it also supplied the Uchiha with resources and leverage. 15 19 20

After Tsunade joined as medical captain, Goketsu Senju sought Uchiha protection for the declining Senju Clan. The Uchiha accepted the Senju's assets and settlement under their protection, eventually taking control of one-third of Konoha's assets. 32 33 37

Kushina and the Nine-Tails

The clan's Security Force initially failed to suppress Kushina during a Nine-Tails berserk episode before Byakuya intervened to save them. 39

Kushina later joined the Uchiha Clan under Byakuya's protection. Her membership gave the clan a strategic advantage because Byakuya could control the Nine-Tails through his Mangekyō Sharingan, while Kushina herself experienced freedom from the confinement imposed by Konoha. 48

Third Shinobi World War

Hiruzen assigned the Uchiha Clan to lead the frontal campaign against Sunagakure, expecting the battle to weaken them. Instead, Byakuya led the clan through successive ambushes, and their performance impressed the accompanying Ino-Shika-Cho and Hyuga forces. 62 64 65 67

The campaign culminated in the defeat of Shukaku and the complete occupation of Sunagakure. Byakuya's Complete Susanoo was presented as the “power of the Uchiha clan,” with Sunagakure's leaders comparing it to Uchiha Madara. 73 79 82

Conflict with Hiruzen Sarutobi

While Byakuya was away, Hiruzen released Fugaku, installed him as clan head, and seized Uchiha property. Fugaku's compliance with the Will of Fire allowed the clan's commercial district to become desolate and its buildings to be occupied. 85 98

Upon returning, Byakuya ordered the recovery of clan assets and retaliation against Root and the Shimura Clan. The Uchiha destroyed Root's base, conquered the Shimura Clan, and ignored Hiruzen's attempts to intervene. 98 100 101

Hiruzen, Danzō, Koharu, Homura, their clans, and Anbu then launched a nighttime extermination operation against the Uchiha. The clan had already evacuated its elderly and children and prepared an ambush within its territory. 102 103

The attackers failed to defeat Byakuya. Hiruzen's attempt to destabilize the clan by releasing the Nine-Tails also failed when Mikoto controlled the beast and Byakuya resealed it within Kushina. 104 105

The Uchiha ultimately routed the attacking forces with an armored Nine-Tails Susanoo. Hiruzen abandoned Konohagakure with the Sarutobi, Utatane, and Mito clans after his forces were overwhelmed. 106 108 110

Tsunade Administration

After Hiruzen's flight, Byakuya supported Tsunade's appointment as Hokage rather than claiming the office for himself. Uchiha members became the new ANBU, tasked with the Hokage's protection and Konoha's security. 112

When Iwagakure and Kumogakure attacked simultaneously, Byakuya volunteered the Uchiha Clan to lead Konoha's defense. The clan's continued military prominence made its Mangekyō Sharingan a central concern for the invading villages. 116 117
