Background / History
Luo is a survivor of Freyvans, the “White Town,” whose inhabitants were devastated by Lead Sickness and war. He knew Abel through their church, where Luo’s father had treated Abel’s Amber Lead Syndrome. After hiding among corpses, Luo was discovered by soldiers and nearly executed before Abel intervened. 3 4
During their escape from Freyvans, Luo endured hunger, beatings, and pursuit alongside Abel. He refused pity from strangers, stealing two offered coins rather than accepting charity, but intended to use the money to feed both himself and Abel. 7 10
Luo and Abel stowed away aboard a Donquixote Family smuggling ship and were brought before Donquixote Doflamingo. Luo directly asked to join the Family, declaring his wish to destroy everything he saw; his despair as a White Town survivor convinced Doflamingo to give both boys a trial. 17 18
During the trial against Diamante, Luo rashly attacked with a short sword and a concealed grenade, but was effortlessly defeated. He later shielded the badly injured Abel from Diamante’s follow-up attack and personally treated Abel when the Family’s doctors refused to help. 19 20
Although Doflamingo accepted him, Corazon repeatedly drove Luo out of the Family base. Luo persisted through twenty ejections, eventually attempting to assassinate Corazon with a hidden knife before fleeing; he was captured during his attempted escape. Doflamingo nevertheless promoted both Luo and Abel to official Family members. 22 25 26 28
As an official member, Luo received training in swordsmanship, physical combat, firearms, and tactics. He struggled with his illness and lagged behind Abel, Baby-5, and Buffalo in several exercises, leaving him increasingly frustrated with his own perceived weakness. 30 32 33 48
Appearance
Luo is a sickly young boy whose appearance visibly reflects his Lead Sickness.
- Wears a distinctive black-and-white spotted hat. 3
- Has white patches on his face caused by Lead Sickness; he sometimes covers them with coarse cloth to avoid recognition. 7
- Was disguised by Abel with wrapped cloth and a face covering while they attempted to evade authorities. 16
Personality
Luo is fiercely proud, defiant, and unwilling to accept pity. Even while starving, he chose to snatch charity rather than be treated as someone helpless, and he repeatedly insisted on remaining with the Donquixote Family despite Corazon’s abuse. 7 23
His trauma from Freyvans fuels an intense hatred of the world, the World Government, and the Navy. Initially, this manifests as reckless aggression: he challenges vastly stronger opponents, threatens Corazon, and attempts an assassination when desperation overwhelms him. 18 19 23 26
Despite his volatility, Luo is loyal to Abel and possesses considerable resolve. He protected Abel from Diamante, treated his injuries himself, and continues training despite the physical burden of Lead Sickness. 20 32
