Background / History

The Donquixote Family was founded by the former Celestial Dragon Donquixote Doflamingo. Before gaining his later status, the organization was already a rapidly expanding North Sea criminal force with a recognized emblem and multiple strongholds. 17

The Family profited from the destruction of Freyvans by supplying at least half of the weapons used in the war. Afterward, it exploited the victorious nations' wealth and fear of renewed conflict, pushing them into further arms purchases and arms races. 10

Its smuggling operations faced open resistance from North Sea pirates. When the Giant Bear Pirates and Hundred Swords Pirates raided a Family ship, Senor Pink defeated both captains, while the kingdom's soldiers avoided arresting Family personnel for fear of retaliation. 12 14

Abel and Luo stowed away aboard a Family smuggling ship and were brought to Doflamingo at the Spadamalus stronghold. Initially accepted as trainee members after a test against Diamante, they were later promoted to official members as Doflamingo accelerated his recruitment and expansion plans. 17 18 28

Following the hijacking of three smuggling ships in Quelpa, Doflamingo personally led a retaliation operation. The Family annihilated the Skunk Pirates and three allied pirate groups, then escaped a Navy pursuit led by Vice Admiral Tsuru. 35 38 41 42

Leadership and hierarchy

• Donquixote Doflamingo — Captain and founder. His orders are absolute, and he personally decides recruitment, operations, punishments, and the distribution of Devil Fruits. 17 18 28 49
• Highest cadres — Senior members possess authority that trainee members must not challenge; offending one can warrant death under the Family's rules. 22
• Trainee members — Recruits are tested before becoming official Family members. Abel and Luo began in this status before their promotion. 18 28

Blood Family Rules

The Family presents itself as a group whose members help one another and never betray each other. In practice, the rules demand absolute loyalty to Doflamingo and respect for cadre authority. 21 22

Doflamingo regards betrayal as unforgivable. He refused to accept suspicion against a Family member without proof, but stated that he would personally execute anyone confirmed to have sold out the organization. 23 28
