Background / History

Before his on-page introduction, the Donquixote Family was already a major North Sea arms supplier. At least half the weapons used in the war that destroyed Freyvans had been purchased from the Family; after the war, its smuggling ships exchanged weapons for money and supplies from the newly enriched nations. 10

Doflamingo founded the Donquixote Family and built it around underground black-market trade. Although the organization was feared in the North Sea, it had not yet gained the later stature of an underworld emperor or a Shichibukai, leaving its smuggling operations vulnerable to attacks from rival pirates. 10 17

At Spadamalus, Senor Pink brought the stowaways Abel and Luo before Doflamingo. Intrigued by Luo's desire to destroy the world and Abel's resourcefulness, Doflamingo ordered Trebol and Diamante to test them, then accepted them as trainee members after Abel endured Diamante's attack and rose again. 17 18 20

Doflamingo offered the boys the possibility that a Devil Fruit acquired through the Family's black-market dealings could cure their Lead Sickness. He later elevated both from trainees to official Family members, accelerating recruitment and training as he sought to stop hiding from the world and expand his power openly. 21 28

After the Skunk Pirates hijacked three Family smuggling ships, Doflamingo personally led the retaliation at Quelpa. His forces destroyed the Skunk Pirates' trap and defeated three additional pirate crews that attempted to sink the Flamingo. 35 36 37 38

The Navy's pursuit under Vice Admiral Tsuru repeatedly forced Doflamingo to retreat. During one interception, he rescued Abel and Buffalo from a fall with his strings, confronted Tsuru directly to cover his crew's escape, and returned injured but uncaptured. 28 39 41 42

Following the destruction of four pirate groups and the killing of several Navy personnel, Doflamingo's bounty rose to 130 million Belly. He treated this notoriety as secondary to his wider underground ambitions. 44

When Rakeish secretly colluded with other groups, he ordered retaliation; yet when Jora suggested the Navy's timely arrival meant there was a traitor, he rejected the accusation without proof, believing suspicion would destroy the Family from within. 23 28

His concept of “family” is conditional and hierarchical. Cadres hold absolute authority over lower-ranked members, while he evaluates recruits chiefly by their potential and usefulness; Abel and Luo were given opportunities despite their illness because Doflamingo saw possible value in them. 20 22 28
