Background / History
Jiraiya's life was shaped by the Great Toad Sage's prophecies. He trained at Mount Myōboku, fought Hanzō of the Salamander during the shinobi wars, and earned the title of Sannin. Although he could have succeeded Hiruzen Sarutobi as Hokage, he instead continued traveling in search of the prophesied person who could change the world. 71
During a war in Amegakure, Jiraiya took in and trained the orphans Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan for three years. Nagato's Rinnegan led Jiraiya to believe he was the Child of Prophecy, but Jiraiya later believed that disciple had died and resumed his search. 71 173
His next disciple was Minato Namikaze, Naruto's father. After Minato's death, Jiraiya came to regard Naruto as his final disciple and began writing The Tale of Uzumaki Naruto. 26 71
Appearance
Jiraiya is a large, broad-chested man with wild white hair, a coarse nose, and a red outer robe. He commonly wears wooden sandals and an “Oil” forehead protector associated with Mount Myōboku. 26 60
- His usual attire includes a loose red robe, often worn open, and wooden sandals. 26 49
- In Sage Mode, his face develops pustules, red eye markings, and horizontal toad pupils. 60 85
- Fukasaku and Shima can perch on his shoulders while he uses the Twin Toad Technique. 60 109
- His right arm is severed during his battle with Source. 270
Personality
Jiraiya initially presents himself as shamelessly lustful and spends much of his free time pursuing women or gathering material for his adult novels. His first encounter with Naruto begins with an attempt to recruit him for this purpose. 26
Behind the frivolity, he is observant, candid, and deeply protective of his students. He recognizes Naruto's abandonment by Konoha, takes responsibility for training him, and refuses to abandon the village when it faces crisis. 27 39
He values freedom and originally refuses the Hokage position, but he is not indifferent to Konoha's fate. He repeatedly accepts personal danger to protect the village, Naruto, and the wider shinobi world. 39 172 175
Naruto's criticism of his stagnant power reignites Jiraiya's competitive drive. Rather than resign himself to the Great Toad Sage's prediction of his death, Jiraiya trains further and chooses to confront fate head-on. 106 109
