Background / History

Xue Ding had spent nearly twenty years at the Celestial Master Temple by the time he met Yuan Tianzong. Though he appeared to be in his early twenties, he was thirty-eight years old. As the temple’s senior disciple, he had already taken on teaching junior disciples and had learned to cook while accompanying his master on training journeys. 36 40

When Yuan Tianzong sought the forbidden Celestial Master Cave, Xue Ding refused to reveal its location despite being threatened with death. He admitted that he feared dying, but considered defending the temple’s rules and setting an example for his juniors his responsibility. He eventually directed Yuan to his ninth junior sister, believing Yuan would not harm her and asking that his involvement remain undisclosed. 31 32

Yuan Tianzong’s subsequent suppression of the possessed Old Celestial Master prevented a disaster at the temple. The Old Celestial Master later instructed Xue Ding to build a connection with Yuan, recognizing that Yuan held a favorable opinion of him. Xue Ding approached Yuan honestly on his masters’ behalf, beginning a relationship in which he provided meals and information while receiving cultivation guidance. 32 34 35

Xue Ding is a Daoist cultivator who appears much younger than his actual age. He commonly wears flowing Daoist robes and carries the Celestial Master Sword, presenting a composed and righteous image befitting the temple’s senior disciple. 36 40

His usual conduct is gentle: he teaches even newly initiated outer disciples without reservation and is respected throughout the temple. 31 40

His upright exterior conceals severe inner turmoil. Years of demonic thoughts made him afraid to draw his sword, fearing that battle would destabilize his mind and destroy both his own reputation and that of the temple.
