Appearance
- Elderly Daoist: Appears in a gray Daoist robe, with an ancient, initially expressionless face 13.
- Eyes: Described as murky and old, yet capable of conveying curiosity, wariness, or overwhelming indifference 14 44.
- Manifested presence: Can appear remotely as a phantom formed from purple mist 78.
- Battle appearance: His hair and beard bristle when he personally confronts Taiyuan with the Jade Disk of Creation 123.
Personality
Hongjun treats the Primordial World as a chessboard, arranging cultivators, karmic debts, and Calamities into a predetermined order. His outward detachment conceals a willingness to sacrifice individuals: he considers Hongyun’s death necessary to resolve Karma and begin a Calamity 14 51.
His response to Taiyuan develops from curiosity into alarm. Initially intrigued by a cultivator who ignores Saintly seats, he later attempts to bring Taiyuan under his control through Primordial Violet Qi. When that fails, he turns to manufactured conflicts and attacks on Taiyuan’s foundations 14 44 64 68 86.
Hongjun usually remains composed even when a plan fails, but repeated defeats expose frustration and exhaustion. His final confrontation marks a change from indirect manipulation to personal combat; after losing, he accepts Taiyuan’s victory with relief and recognition 68 89 117 123.
Abilities & Skills
Heavenly Dao Authority
Hongjun exercises oppressive authority as the Heavenly Dao’s spokesperson 61 78.
- His voice and Saintly presence reach cultivators across the Primordial World 6.
- A remote decree freezes the river of stars and prevents Taiyuan’s Judge’s Brush from descending 78.
- His pressure overwhelms Zenith Heaven Golden Immortals and Quasi-Saints without requiring a direct physical attack 78.
- His authority has constraints: Taiyuan’s vast Merit and Heavenly Dao-recognized Underworld position prevent Hongjun from simply killing him directly 78.
Fate and Karma Manipulation
Hongjun redirects events through karmic arrangements and changes to heavenly secrets 14 89.
- Plans for Jieyin and Zhunti to displace Hongyun and Kunpeng from their seats, creating debts and resentment that would lead toward Hongyun’s death 14.
- Spreads the claim that Hongyun possesses Primordial Violet Qi, drawing treasure-seeking attackers to Huoyun Cave 50 51.
- Alters fate through the Jade Disk of Creation, influencing Di Jun toward releasing the ten Golden Crows 89.
- Later manipulates karmic connections to threaten the order Taiyuan has established 122.
Primordial Violet Qi Distribution
Hongjun uses Primordial Violet Qi both as a route toward Sainthood and as leverage over its recipients 63 64.
- Attempts to force a strand upon Hongyun during the attack on Huoyun Cave 51.
- Offers Taiyuan a strand as a reward for establishing Reincarnation; accepting it would create a karmic obligation to Hongjun 63 64.
- Splits a masterless strand between the East Sea Eye and the Immemorial Volcano, provoking competition around the remnant souls of the Ancestor Dragon and Primordial Phoenix 65.
- His control is not absolute: Taiyuan catches the strand intended for Hongyun, refuses another offer, and neutralizes the divided strands under Underworld jurisdiction 51 64 68.
Heavenly Dao Chains
Hongjun deploys chains that suppress Mount Sumeru while draining its Destiny and spiritual veins 86 87.
- The chains damage the mountain’s medicinal garden and suppress its Chaos Green Lotus 86 88.
- Attempts to attack them expose Zhunti to severe Heavenly Dao backlash 87.
- Their continuing operation relies on a concealed black formation flag as a pivot 87.
- Taiyuan removes the flag, weakens the chains with the Netherworld Earth Book, and tears them apart using Pangu’s Wish Light and his Glazed Pure World Body 87 88.
Creation Disc Combat
Hongjun’s strongest documented combat tool is the incomplete Creation Jade Disc, also called the Jade Disk of Creation 117 123.
- Releases Heavenly Dao suppression strong enough to pin and mortally wound an early-stage Saint skeletal chaos beast 117.
- After Hongjun reverses his Dao integration, the disk is freed from Heavenly Dao supervision and becomes a weapon belonging solely to him 123.
- Its edge carries the runes of the Three Thousand Great Daos and slices through Purple Cloud Palace’s dome 123.
- His full-force attack ultimately fails to harm Taiyuan, and the disk is cracked 123.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Jade Disk of Creation / Creation Jade Disc — Incomplete treasure used for observation, fate manipulation, Heavenly Dao suppression, and direct combat. It projects a miniature image of the Great Desolation and also serves as Hongjun’s chessboard 86 89 117 123.
- Primordial Violet Qi — Saint-making resource used as a reward, karmic tether, and bait for renewed Calamities 51 63 64 65.
- Black formation flag — Concealed pivot sustaining the Heavenly Dao chains over Mount Sumeru; dislodged by Taiyuan’s Treasure Dropping Golden Coin 87.
Relationships
- Taiyuan — Uncontrollable variable who becomes Hongjun’s principal adversary. Taiyuan disrupts his Saintly arrangements, rescues Hongyun, establishes Reincarnation, refuses co-option, and ultimately defeats him 14 44 51 60 64 123.
- Nuwa — Her attainment of Sainthood through Taiyuan’s Chaos Green Lotus Seed bypasses Hongjun’s planned Violet Qi arrangement. Her protection of Taiyuan later complicates Hongjun’s intervention at the Heavenly Wedding 44 78.
- Hongyun — Intended sacrificial pawn. Hongjun arranges treasure-seeking attacks against him and attempts to force Violet Qi upon him so that his death can advance the Calamity 50 51.
- Di Jun — Addresses Hongjun as a disciple and follows his hints against Taiyuan. Hongjun preserves the Heavenly Wedding and later manipulates circumstances leading to the release of Di Jun’s sons 69 78 89.
- The Three Pure Ones — Figures within Hongjun’s planned cosmic order. He invites them to discuss establishing their teachings; Laozi and Yuanshi are identified as his students when watching his battle against the skeletal beast 72 117.
- Jieyin and Zhunti — Their refusal to contest the Saintly cushions prevents Hongjun’s intended karmic arrangement involving Hongyun and Kunpeng 13 14.
- Houtu — Her transformation into the Six Paths of Reincarnation fundamentally changes Hongjun’s cosmic chessboard and heightens his concern over Taiyuan 60.
- Taiqing — Turns Hongjun’s assassination scheme back upon Purple Cloud Palace by transferring karmic misfortune there, then arrives as Hongjun prepares to finish the skeletal chaos beast 117.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Sainthood and the First Lecture
Hongjun announces himself as the Primordial World’s first Saint and opens Purple Cloud Palace to all cultivators fated to hear the Great Dao. His intended seating arrangement fails when Taiyuan persuades Jieyin and Zhunti to avoid the six Saintly cushions. Hongyun retains the fifth seat and Kunpeng the sixth, preventing the planned displacement and karmic debts 6 13 14.
After the gathering, a golden decree appoints East King Duke as Head of Male Immortals and West Queen Mother as Head of Female Immortals. East King Duke immediately begins asserting his new authority against Taiyuan’s group 22.
Nuwa’s Sainthood and Hongyun’s Rescue
Nuwa becomes a Saint through a Chaos Green Lotus Seed rather than Hongjun’s Primordial Violet Qi. Left holding a strand he can no longer distribute as planned, Hongjun recognizes Taiyuan as a variable capable of bypassing Heavenly Dao arrangements 44.
He then directs attention toward Hongyun by circulating the claim that Hongyun possesses Violet Qi. During Kunpeng and Ming He’s assault on Huoyun Cave, Hongjun sends the strand toward Hongyun to force the intended outcome. Taiyuan intercepts it barehanded and prevents the sacrifice 50 51.
Reincarnation and Failed Co-option
The completion of the Six Paths of Reincarnation convinces Hongjun that Taiyuan can no longer be left unchecked. He summons Taiyuan to explain his interference with the world’s life-and-death cycle 60 61.
Taiyuan cites the Heavenly Dao’s Merit as approval of Reincarnation. Hongjun offers him Primordial Violet Qi, but Taiyuan refuses the karmic tether and instead requests that the West be excluded from future Calamities. Hongjun neither grants nor rejects that request, stating that contributions to Heaven and Earth bring Heavenly Dao protection 63 64.
Dragon–Phoenix Bait and the Heavenly Court
Hongjun splits the masterless Violet Qi between the East Sea Eye and the Immemorial Volcano to provoke a new Calamity. Taiyuan counters by placing both locations under Underworld jurisdiction, stabilizing the Dragon and Phoenix remnants, and sealing the Violet Qi atop towers as streetlights 65 68.
Concluding that schemes alone are insufficient, Hongjun turns toward the Heavenly Court as a potential opponent for Taiyuan. He also swiftly supports discussion of the Three Pure Ones establishing teachings—an arrangement Taiyuan recognizes as capable of generating wider factional conflict 68 69 72.
At the Heavenly Wedding, Hongjun stops Taiyuan from dismantling the Demon Race’s formation, invoking Yin–Yang balance and the Heavenly Dao’s grand trend. He nevertheless allows Taiyuan to leave with three-tenths of the Heavenly Court’s treasury as compensation 77 78.
Mount Sumeru and the Ten Suns
After Taiyuan becomes Human Race Saint Master, Hongjun places a black chess piece in the West and unleashes a disaster upon Mount Sumeru. Taiyuan breaks the resulting Heavenly Dao chains and openly challenges him 86 87 88.
Hongjun regards the chains as only a probe. He next manipulates heavenly secrets so that Di Jun releases the ten Golden Crows, whose uncontrolled True Sun Fire devastates the Great Desolation and threatens the Human Race Taiyuan protects 89.
Palace Siege and Final Defeat
A skeletal chaos beast besieges Purple Cloud Palace after Taiqing redirects karmic misfortune there. Hongjun must remain to protect the Heavenly Dao core beneath the palace, spending enormous amounts of Heavenly Dao origin before using the Creation Jade Disc to subdue the beast 117.
Taiyuan later develops the Pangu Creation Lotus Platform and chooses to confront Hongjun directly rather than continue responding to scattered crises. Hongjun reverses his Dao integration to free his treasure for unrestricted combat. Their battle destroys Purple Cloud Palace; Hongjun’s all-out attack fails, his disk cracks, and he acknowledges defeat 122 123.
