Background / History

Zhunti originally lived with Taiyuan and Jieyin on the impoverished, desolate Mount Sumeru. After searching thirty thousand li for materials to repair their mountain gate and finding not even a weed, he urged his brothers to go east and seize a better cave dwelling; he even proposed falsely claiming Eastern treasures were “fated” for him. 1

Taiyuan’s support changed Zhunti’s circumstances. A drop of divine water helped restore his foundation and stabilize his early-stage Zenith Heaven Golden Immortal cultivation. In gratitude, Zhunti vowed to transform the Western Lands through exhausting labor, including sorting earth veins, moving mountains, and gathering spiritual-beast dung to fertilize Mount Sumeru’s fields. 3

Over the following ten thousand years, Zhunti and Jieyin helped turn the West from a ruined wasteland into a flourishing immortal realm. Zhunti became a regular worker in the rear-mountain medicinal garden, tending the Five-Needle Pine and harvesting its fruit. 4

Appearance

Zhunti was initially gaunt and poorly dressed, with patched robes, disheveled hair, and a face marked by hardship. After Mount Sumeru prospered, he became visibly healthy and vigorous, usually appearing as a bald Daoist carrying a golden shovel. 1 4 38

Zhunti is impulsive, outspoken, and intensely loyal to his brothers. In his early hardship, he readily considered shameless schemes to improve their situation; at Purple Cloud Palace, he nearly attempted to cry poverty and kneel for a seat before Taiyuan stopped him. 1 13

He is highly responsive to Taiyuan’s guidance and rewards. Gratitude for his restored cultivation turns into fierce ambition to improve Mount Sumeru, while Taiyuan’s plans—though often beyond Zhunti’s understanding—usually receive his eventual obedience. 3 33 68
