History

Origins on the Sun Star

Di Jun and his younger brother Tai Yi develop within blood cocoons hidden by an Innate Formation on the Sun Star. When East King Duke takes the Fusang Tree’s origin, Di Jun chooses not to interfere: protecting their imminent manifestation matters more than retaining the spiritual root. He nevertheless senses that East King Duke will become a formidable enemy 9.

The brothers later develop influence on the Sun Star and feel a natural aversion when the Witch Clan emerges. At Purple Heaven Palace, Tai Yi recognizes East King Duke’s aura and attacks him over the earlier loss of the Sun Star’s origin. Di Jun attempts to protect his brother after East King Duke defeats him 39 52 53.

Founding the Yao Race

After Hongjun’s first lecture, Di Jun and Tai Yi approach Kunpeng as a potential recruit. During a later lecture, Di Jun requests permission to establish the Demon Race, initially declaring that all beings with spirits should belong to it. The proposal provokes the assembled cultivators, particularly the Three Pure Ones, and Di Jun quickly exempts the palace’s great powers from his claim 56 62.

Hongjun approves the race’s establishment but appoints East King Duke and Queen Mother of the West as the heads of male and female immortals. This separate authority frustrates Di Jun’s hopes of ruling all primordial beings. Back on the Sun Star, Bai Ze persuades the disappointed brothers to proceed 62 63.

With Bai Ze and nine other transformed exotic beasts forming the Ten Great Demon Sages, Di Jun establishes a territory west of Buzhou Mountain, opposite the Witch Clan. His declaration receives Heavenly Dao merit, enabling him and Tai Yi to become Quasi-Saints 63.

The Heavenly Court and Heavenly Marriage

Hongjun later tells Di Jun that the ruler of the Yao Race cannot become a Saint. Despite this setback, Di Jun continues expanding his faction. A sensed opportunity leads him, Tai Yi, Fuxi, Bai Ze, and others up Buzhou Mountain, where they discover the heavenly staircase leading to the South Heaven Gate 71 76.

Bai Ze recommends the Taiyin Star’s rulers as candidates for Heavenly Empress. Di Jun personally visits Xi He and Chang Xi, discussing the Dao before proposing marriage. Xi He develops affection for him and accepts; Chang Xi refuses and eventually seeks refuge with East King Duke and Queen Mother of the West 78 79.

Nuwa officiates Di Jun and Xi He’s Heavenly Marriage, and the couple receives merit. The Witch Clan then interrupts the celebration with insults and a full-force advance. Di Jun fights Zhu Rong in his Golden Crow form, gaining the upper hand through his Primordial Spirit cultivation and companion treasure before the battle expands 82 83.

Di Jun subsequently establishes the Yao Heavenly Court and proclaims himself Heavenly Emperor, with Xi He as Heavenly Empress. The declaration attracts Heavenly Dao merit but angers both the Three Pure Ones and the Witch Clan 91 92.

War and the Search for Sainthood

During the renewed Witch–Demon War, Di Jun deploys the Myriad Stars Array. The Witches answer with the Twelve Capital Gods and Demons Array and manifest Pangu’s true body, placing the Yao leadership in mortal danger. Hongjun intervenes, confirms Di Jun’s heaven-ordained position, and forbids further warfare before the appointed calamity 92 93 95.

Di Jun refuses to accept permanent subordination to the Saints. East King Duke’s victories give him hope that proving the Dao through laws could offer an alternative to a Saint position. He also pursues Hongyun’s Primordial Violet Qi through prolonged planning, but the opportunity escapes after Hongyun’s death 88 90 123 138 139.

The loss nearly destabilizes Di Jun’s mind until Tai Yi uses the Chaos Bell to steady him. Di Jun takes Hongyun’s Nine-Nine Soul Scattering Gourd and prepares to withdraw, but Fengdu confronts the Heavenly Court’s forces, repels them, and demands that they leave Hongyun’s remains behind 138 139.

The Human Race Campaign

Facing another inevitable war with the Witches, Di Jun accepts Jiu Ying’s report that human flesh and blood can restrain them. He orders a secret operation to obtain those materials and forge the Witch-Slaying Sword. Fuxi carries the plan to Nuwa 114 115.

Di Jun dispatches four divisions of Heavenly Generals against the Human Race. When Kong Xuan interrupts the slaughter, he sends Tai Yi and Fuxi to remove the obstacle. The campaign ultimately kills tens of millions of humans and supplies the sword’s materials 117 119 147.

East King Duke’s Azure Emperor clone defends the humans, and East King Duke himself attacks the Heavenly Court. Di Jun fears the confrontation despite Nuwa’s protection; Xi He is injured, and Di Jun and other demons are temporarily imprisoned while the Saints intervene 120 121.

Final Battle and Death

In the final Witch–Demon War, Dijiang kills Xi He while she is attacking Hou Yi. Di Jun immediately attacks Dijiang with the River Diagram and Luo Book. When Gou Mang intercepts him, Di Jun unleashes the concealed Witch-Slaying Sword and kills the Wood Ancestral Witch 146 147.

With the Witches’ formation broken, Di Jun joins Tai Yi and Fuxi in a coordinated assault that kills two more Ancestral Witches. Dijiang’s self-destruction devastates the Yao forces, and further Ancestral Witch self-detonations destroy Di Jun’s body and True Spirit. Tai Yi witnesses his brother’s death and subsequently self-destructs as well 147.

Appearance

  • True form: A majestic three-legged Golden Crow 9 147.
  • Before manifestation: Enclosed in a massive blood cocoon, with a Primordial Spirit phantom floating within his bird form 9.
  • Spiritual presence: Radiates Yang Fire and an imperial aura even before completing his Innate Dao Body 9.
  • Demeanor: Described as noble during his courtship of the Taiyin Goddesses 78.

Personality

Di Jun combines expansive ambition with practical caution. He sacrifices access to the Fusang Tree rather than endanger his manifestation, warns Tai Yi against criticizing Hongjun, and listens to Bai Ze’s advice after a political setback. His restraint also extends to abandoning plans to annex the Dragon Clan because East King Duke’s Dao field lies in the East Sea 9 63 228.

His imperial pride is inseparable from his pursuit of personal power. He wants the Heavenly Emperor to stand equal to or above the Saints, rather than become their puppet. Failures involving sainthood provoke profound despair, though he eventually regains his composure after losing Hongyun’s Violet Qi. His willingness to order mass human slaughter shows how far he will go to secure victory over the Witches 90 114 138 139 147.
