Seeking the Clan Head Position

Uchiha Yuan got even angrier when he thought of Fugaku Uchiha.

How had the Uchiha Clan ended up with a Clan Head like him?

Fugaku Uchiha's defining trait was indecisiveness. He had not the slightest backbone when it came to getting things done.

As Clan Head, he'd let his clan members clamor for a rebellion while he stood caught in the middle, unable to make a decision.

Later, when he learned that Itachi Uchiha had taken on the mission to wipe out the clan, he was actually relieved.

It was as if his unspoken thought was: At last, I've passed off this thankless job. I'll just lie down and let them cut my throat without resisting. Whatever happens to the Uchiha, I can't exactly fight my own son, can I?

What's more, Fugaku Uchiha had accomplished nothing during his time as Clan Head.

First, he had done nothing to change how the villagers saw the Uchiha Clan, leaving the clan increasingly estranged from Konoha.

Second, he had clung to the hope that the village leadership would relent, despite their relentless pressure. When two tigers fight, there will be a clash. Unless one side completely overpowers the other or wipes it out, there will be no end to the conflict. When Konoha was founded, the Senju Clan had completely overpowered the Uchiha. The lessons of the past were right there, yet Fugaku Uchiha had failed to learn from them.

Third, after the clan had spent so long preparing for a coup, they simply gave up in the end. Fugaku Uchiha, as Clan Head, had brought nothing but shame upon the Uchiha Clan.

The Clan Head of a great clan should be prepared to fight to the death, even when they know the clan is doomed, and never let their enemies get off easy! They shouldn't lack even the courage to strike.

Most importantly, Fugaku Uchiha had a Mangekyo. It wasn't that he lacked strength; as a Clan Head with strength, he had simply lost the bloodlust to fight!

Take the Kaguya Clan of Kirigakure, for example. Their circumstances were almost the same as the Uchiha's. The village leadership wouldn't tolerate them, and under its influence, ordinary villagers had demonized Kekkei Genkai. Haku had merely shown off his Kekkei Genkai, and the villagers killed his mother!

The Kaguya Clan might not have been very bright, but at that point, its members understood that the Fourth Mizukage (who was being controlled by Obito) and Kirigakure's leadership would never tolerate them.

In that situation, it could only end when one side fell. So they fought to the death. You've driven us to this, so we won't let you Kirigakure get off easy either!

The Kaguya Clan chose to launch a coup, and in the end, the whole clan was wiped out. Only Kimimaro survived.

But their courage and fighting spirit had done their ancestors proud!

By contrast, just thinking about the Uchiha Clan made Uchiha Yuan feel ashamed.

That was why Fugaku Uchiha absolutely couldn't remain Clan Head. Only by forcing him out and taking the position himself would there be any chance of changing the Uchiha Clan's fate.

At that thought, Uchiha Yuan took a deep breath and turned his attention to the other two battlefields.

Hyuga Asana was holding her own against a Chunin, though defeating him would be a little difficult. Meanwhile, Shibi Aburame had already taken out all four Kirigakure Shinobi.

Seeing that, Uchiha Yuan hurried over to help. Together with Hyuga Asana, he defeated the Chunin and took his head.

Hyuga Asana didn't say anything about being able to handle it herself. They were on a battlefield, not playing house. Showing off like that now would have been foolish.

Yamanaka Kizuki, who had been hiding in the rear, came out once she saw that everyone had defeated their enemies.

After quickly dealing with the bodies, Shibi Aburame led them onward.

Uchiha Yuan's squad spent two full days scouting the battlefield. During that time, they ran into three groups of enemies.

Uchiha Yuan killed five Kirigakure Shinobi in total, but only received four Stat Points.

That was because one of the five barely even counted as a ninja. He was about the same as a disposable extra in an ordinary fourth-year class at Konoha Academy. Aside from having Chakra in his body, he was no different from an ordinary person.

After several days of testing, Uchiha Yuan had more or less figured it out: he only gained Stat Points by killing someone with genuine ninja abilities.

In other words, they had to be at least as strong as a Genin for him to gain Stat Points. Disposable extras didn't even qualify for a single Stat Point.

"All right, my mission ends here," Shibi Aburame said when they reached the edge of the battlefield.

"Teacher Shibui, we disarmed so many traps along the way and took out three groups of enemies. Does that count as a great achievement?" Yamanaka Kizuki asked.

"If this operation were a village mission, it would probably count as an A-Rank Mission. For newly graduated Genin, that's quite an achievement," Shibi Aburame said.

"Yuan, Asana, did you hear that? An A-Rank Mission! We just graduated and already completed one. The three of us are incredible!"

"Teacher Shibui's the incredible one. Don't forget, he took care of most of the enemies we encountered," Uchiha Yuan said.

"True. Teacher Shibui could easily suppress even a Jonin. He must be one of the strongest Jonin around!" Hyuga Asana said.

Being praised by his students made Shibi Aburame a little embarrassed. He cleared his throat and said, "I'm not one of the strongest on this battlefield. I wouldn't stand a chance against the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist.

"With one of them, I could make sure everyone got away safely. With two, I might have to choose who to save."

At the mention of choosing who to save, Yamanaka Kizuki shuddered. He was the weakest one here, so he'd be the one left behind, wouldn't he?

It would clearly make more sense to protect Hyuga Asana and Uchiha Yuan, who were both stronger. They would have a better chance of escaping than he did.

At that thought, Yamanaka Kizuki felt even more pressed for time. He wanted to improve his strength as soon as possible. He didn't want to die on the battlefield!

"Yuan, have you learned a new Genjutsu?" Yamanaka Kizuki asked.

"I still haven't quite mastered Tree Binding Death."

"That's all right. Once we're back at camp, use me to practice! We'll improve together."

Uchiha Yuan smiled. "Sure! Just don't run away at the last minute."

"I definitely won't."

Hearing them talk, Shibi Aburame understood that Yamanaka Kizuki wanted to improve his mental techniques by resisting Genjutsu.

Shibi Aburame didn't object to the idea. Quite a few members of the Yamanaka Clan had tried it. Early on, their mental techniques—especially the range of their sensory abilities—had indeed improved quite a bit. But later, they'd developed some resistance to Genjutsu, and their mental techniques had stopped improving.

Still, it seemed no one from the Yamanaka Clan had ever tried this with a member of the Uchiha Clan.

After all, the Yamanaka Clan had always been aligned with the Hokage, and its relationship with the Uchiha Clan certainly couldn't be called good.

The Uchiha Clan's Genjutsu was without a doubt the best in Konoha. With the added power of the Sharingan, if they were willing to help members of the Yamanaka Clan improve their mental techniques through Genjutsu, they might actually get some surprising results!

At that thought, Shibi Aburame became a little interested in the idea too.
