Mosen's parents had been killed by the Celestial Dragons. At the time, he hadn't awakened his memories of his past life, but his hatred for the Celestial Dragons meant that as soon as he learned of Dragon's dream, he'd joined without hesitation.
Why else would he have trained so hard, even undergoing a dangerous Lineage Factor modification? He wanted power strong enough to kill the Celestial Dragons and avenge his parents.
Dragon had saved Mosen all those years ago, so he knew about Mosen's tragic past. After a brief hesitation, he agreed to let Mosen join. He didn't assign Mosen any tasks, though. At that point, Dragon had only begun to consider overthrowing the Celestial Dragons. He was still completely at a loss as to what to do or how to do it.
Dragon told Mosen that he was going to find a way to overthrow the Celestial Dragons' rule, and asked him to stay in the Navy for the time being and focus on recovering.
Mosen agreed, overcome with excitement.
Then Dragon gave Mosen a Den Den Mushi so they could keep in touch, and left.
Mosen stayed in Loguetown for the next six months or so, recuperating.
After more than half a year of recovery, Mosen's body had more or less healed, but the heart he'd had before the Lineage Factor modification had been replaced with a Mechanized Heart.
His body had never been able to fully adapt to the Mechanized Heart, and Mosen had grown thinner and thinner over the course of that year.
If not for Life Return, which let him forcibly absorb energy from food to nourish his body, he would've been done for from malnutrition long ago.
Once the Navy confirmed that Mosen's body was in good condition, they assigned him to Impel Down.
Vegapunk's experimental records stated that although Mosen hadn't gained any of the Ice-Ice Fruit's abilities after the Lineage Factor modification, he was no longer susceptible to the cold.
That resistance to the cold made him a perfect fit for Impel Down's 5th Layer, Extreme Cold Hell, where he could put it to good use.
On top of that, Mosen had already mastered Life Return, one of the Six Powers, and was reasonably strong. With the Military Wolves to help, he should have little trouble dealing with the prisoners close to freezing to death in Extreme Cold Hell.
As for whether Mosen was trustworthy, there was even less cause for concern. Mosen had been sent by Monkey D. Dragon, Vice Admiral Garp's son. Doubting Mosen's loyalty was practically the same as doubting Vice Admiral Garp's.
Besides, Mosen had agreed without hesitation to take part in Vegapunk's human experiments. That, too, had put the Navy at ease.
He'd readily agreed to take part in an experiment with such a high mortality rate. That kind of selfless willingness to sacrifice himself for the Navy's future spoke volumes.
And so Mosen was sent to Impel Down and became an ordinary guard in Extreme Cold Hell on the 5th Layer.
He was called a guard, but the temperature in Extreme Cold Hell was so low that even Den Den Mushi couldn't be brought in. The other guards never entered the frozen hell except to feed the Military Wolves, leaving Mosen as its sole permanent guard. He might as well have been the Warden of the 5th Layer.
Mosen had been in Extreme Cold Hell on Impel Down's 5th Layer for over half a month now. During that time, he'd clearly felt that the side effects of his Mechanized Heart seemed to disappear entirely whenever he was surrounded by the frozen landscape.
That wasn't all. In the past few days, Mosen had also sensed that he could vaguely control the ice and snow in Extreme Cold Hell, just as Vegapunk had said might happen if his Lineage Factor awakened.
Mosen was thrilled. He kept experimenting with his ability. At first, he could only control the ice and snow by touching it. Gradually, he no longer needed to touch it; the ice and snow around him would gather at his side as he wished, taking all kinds of shapes.
As Mosen grew more adept at using his ice-based Lineage Factor, his Mechanized Heart changed along with it, until it finally became one with him.
Now, all Mosen had to do was think, and he could shape the ice and snow into all kinds of weapons. He could even recreate Aokiji's ice saber and twin ice spears.
In a sense, his awakened Frozen Lineage Factor was like getting an Ice-Ice Fruit for free—one that didn't leave him afraid of Seastone or the sea.
The only real drawback was that he couldn't turn into ice like Aokiji. Overall, his situation was similar to that of the Vinsmoke Family's modified children, Sanji's older brothers and sisters. It was a trade-off.
The moment Mosen's body and mind fully merged, it was as if a switch had flipped in his brain. A flood of memories from his past life came rushing back, throwing his memories into chaos and leading to what had happened at the beginning.
After sorting through all his memories, Mosen let out a long sigh. So, did that make him an undercover agent planted by the Revolutionary Army in the Navy?
The Revolutionary Army hadn't even been founded yet, but in every sense of the word, he was an undercover agent, wasn't he?
At the thought, Mosen felt utterly speechless. According to his memories of his past life, Pirate King Roger wouldn't be executed until this year. That meant it was now the year 1498 of the Grand Line Calendar, twenty-two years before Luffy set sail. He seemed to have arrived a little too early!
"Awooo!"
A chorus of howls outside the snowdrift interrupted Mosen's thoughts. He froze for a moment, then slowly got up and climbed out of the snow.
"Big, big bro, this guy's still alive!"
"Damn it! He's been buried in the snow this long and still hasn't frozen to death. What a freak! The Military Wolves are coming. Let's get out of here."
With that, the two prisoners, one tall and one short, turned and ran.
Mosen frowned. Those two prisoners had been less than five meters away from him. The prisoners in Extreme Cold Hell all wanted him dead, but with the Military Wolves around, none of them had dared lay a hand on him. What those two had just done had clearly been an attempt to kill him.
Mosen's expression darkened as he thought, I've awakened my Frozen Lineage Factor. In this frozen wasteland, what do I have to fear from them? Maybe I should work with the Military Wolves and make an example of them!
At that, Mosen snapped his fingers.
The next instant, he felt a surge of power well up inside him. Under its command, the ice and snow around him formed two spears, which shot straight at the prisoners.
But the spears didn't hit either of them. It was as though they had eyes in the backs of their heads: without even looking back, they easily dodged the twin spears.
"Observation Haki? Right, that makes sense. Pirates with bounties over a hundred million twenty-two years ago would have Two Types of Haki as standard equipment." Mosen muttered to himself.
"Big bro, that guy just attacked us, and the Military Wolves are closing in!" said the square-jawed man.
The short man's expression darkened. In his memory, Mosen hadn't laid a hand on any of the prisoners during his more than half a month in Extreme Cold Hell. Was he planning to make an example of the two brothers today?
"Big bro, what should we do?"
"You hold off the Military Wolves. I'll kill him! There's no way we can run now. If we keep fleeing, the Military Wolves will catch up and tear us apart. We might as well make a stand!"
"All right, big bro, I'll do as you say. But it looked like that guy just used an ability to control ice and snow. Be careful."
"Impossible. Controlling ice and snow is the power of the Logia Ice-Ice Fruit or Snow-Snow Fruit.
"The Ice-Ice Fruit belongs to Kuzan, the Navy's monster rookie, and the Snow-Snow Fruit hasn't appeared in years. If this guy really had the Snow-Snow Fruit, the Navy would be grooming him, not sending him to Impel Down.
"And even if he did have the Snow-Snow Fruit, I wouldn't be afraid! I'm a Great Pirate with a bounty of 180 million Beli. What's there to fear from some little guard? Just keep the Military Wolves busy." With that, the short man charged at Mosen.
Mosen showed no sign of panic. He was proficient in the Six Powers and had mastered Life Return. Though the Lineage Factor modification had left him somewhat frail, he could still fight for a short time.
And who knew how long the prisoner had been locked up in Extreme Cold Hell? He'd probably lost most of his strength. Mosen shouldn't have too much trouble taking him down.
Besides, although Mosen had never experienced this kind of seemingly innate ice-controlling talent in his past life, he knew what it looked like. He'd watched One Piece, Fairy Tail, and other hot-blooded shonen series. They all featured descriptions of ice-based abilities.
And if all else failed, Mosen had spent over a decade playing Dungeon Fighter Online in his previous life. His main character was an Ice Elementalist. Recreating a few abilities should be a piece of cake, right?
When it came to developing the Frozen Lineage Factor, Mosen, standing on the shoulders of giants, had far more tricks up his sleeve than the future Marine Admiral Aokiji.
At the thought, Mosen slowly opened his hand. Drawn by the chill, endless ice and snow gathered in his palm. Frost formed a bow, snow formed its string, and a crystalline bow wreathed in cold appeared in his hand.
Mosen drew the bow, and the ice and snow around him gathered by themselves, forming a glistening ice arrow. He fired it at the short pirate.
The short pirate sneered in disdain and turned slightly, easily dodging Mosen's attack.
"Hah! An attack fit for a child. With Observation Haki, this kind of—" Before the short man could finish, his Observation Haki began blaring warnings. He glanced back and saw that the ice arrow Mosen had fired had circled around and was coming back.
As it flew, the arrow kept absorbing the ice and snow around it, growing thicker and longer by the second!
"How is this possible? You really can control ice and snow! Are you a Snow-Snow Fruit user?" the short man cried, barely dodging the arrow.
Mosen wasn't foolish enough to tell him what his ability was. He kept drawing and firing, sending four ice arrows flying at the short man. Under Mosen's control, they attacked him from every direction.
The short man could only keep dodging the arrows.
He tried rushing straight at Mosen, ignoring the arrows, but every time, Mosen dodged his attack with Shave and Geppo.
A few minutes later, the short man began to slow down. Mosen's lips curved into a faint smile. How much stamina could the prisoners have left after being locked up in Extreme Cold Hell for so long? Mosen's plan from the start had been to wear the prisoner down with ice arrows, then finish him off in one blow.
By then, the short man had figured out Mosen's plan, but there was no way out. There were ice arrows in front of him and Military Wolves behind. Where could he run?
The seconds ticked by, and the short man's movements grew more and more sluggish. One of the ice arrows finally struck him.
But Mosen didn't let his guard down. He was worried the short man might be faking it to lure him closer.
Looking at Mosen, who stood his ground like a mountain, the short man gritted his teeth and cursed, "Damn it! I made it look so convincing, and you still won't come over? Just how cowardly are you?"
Mosen smiled and said nothing. He was just throwing a fit because he couldn't win!
"You coward!"
"Are you even a man? Come fight me fair and square!"
"Chicken! Get over here!"
The short man's insults grew quieter and quieter. Mosen figured he really was finished now.
To celebrate his Lineage Factor awakening and the return of his past-life memories, Mosen decided to give the short prisoner a grand burial.
Mosen took a deep breath. The ice bow in his hands instantly swelled to several times its size. He drew it sideways, and the ice and snow around him surged toward the bowstring, driven by his Frozen Lineage Factor.
"Sleep... forever!"
As Mosen murmured, a gigantic ice arrow shot out. The short man, drained of all his strength, had no way to dodge and took the hit head-on. The four small ice arrows circling in the air shot toward him as well.
The next instant, the arrows burst apart, forming an enormous ice flower. The short man was sealed inside it completely.
After releasing that attack, Mosen ran out of strength. A wave of dizziness washed over him, and he slumped to the ground.
