Background / History
Konoha service and Hyuga Shin’s recruitment
Orochimaru serves as Nawaki’s teacher and commands Konoha’s Iwagakure battlefield forces. During an enemy encirclement, he raises Rashomon to block incoming ninjutsu while Tsunade breaks through toward Nawaki’s squad 16 50.
Hyuga Shin identifies him as the best candidate to carry forward his mission, valuing his intelligence, scientific curiosity, strength, and potential to lead a rebellion. Their discussions push Orochimaru to question the chakra system, the causes of recurring wars, and the possibility of unifying the ninja world 10 20 25.
After Hyuga Shin removes the Sage of Six Paths’ influence from his soul, Orochimaru seeks further answers and joins his cause. Their friendship develops unusually quickly: within a month, Orochimaru is visiting Shin daily, sometimes neglecting his own work 30 31 32 33.
Recapture by the Sage of Six Paths
The White Snake Sage warns Orochimaru against approaching Hyuga Shin and interfering with predetermined fates. Rather than restoring his trust in Ryūchi Cave, the warnings deepen his suspicion of the Three Great Sage Regions 38 39.
Orochimaru subsequently avoids combat and prolongs the war on the Iwagakure front. Hiruzen Sarutobi replaces him with Torifu Akimichi and orders him back to Konoha. Behind the recall, the Sage of Six Paths influences Hiruzen and forcibly invades Orochimaru through a concentrated chakra consciousness formed from nearby ninjas’ hidden contingencies 41 50.
Because Orochimaru still uses the chakra system and has not received a soul-protecting firewall, he cannot resist the renewed control. His original consciousness survives, but his actions are directed toward researching Living Corpse Reincarnation and Impure World Reincarnation in the Book of Seals. Hyuga Shin confirms that he can still be rescued but deliberately postpones intervention 50 51.
Liberation and succession
During the battle against Hyuga Shin, the Sage uses Orochimaru’s body to bring former Kage into the conflict and heal injured Jinchuriki and Tailed Beasts. The healing power comes from the Sage’s true body in the Pure Land, not from Orochimaru himself 120 121 122.
Hyuga Shin’s main body intervenes inside an isolated pocket dimension and annihilates the invading will. Orochimaru regains control, describing the experience as despair-inducing. Shin transfers his knowledge, seals Orochimaru’s soul space against further intrusion, and entrusts the Nether Ninja Village to him 123.
With the core members’ support, Orochimaru formally becomes the Second Nether King. Within half a month, he establishes his own prestige through orderly administration and a series of development proposals 134.
Village leadership and defensive wars
Orochimaru expands the academy, develops the hospital and Ninjutsu Library, recruits specialists, and prepares espionage networks. He also uses speeches, rewards, and promises of historical recognition to strengthen the village’s shared identity 150 154.
Against an army of reincarnated ninja, he deploys his own Impure World Reincarnation forces and works to dismantle Hiruzen’s connection to the Pure Land. After the enemy offensive fails, he publicly exposes the Six Paths conspiracy and allows the allied army to retreat rather than spending the village’s limited resources on a costly pursuit 158 160 164 233.
As the village rises to recognition as the Sixth Great Shinobi Village, Orochimaru uses threats of retaliation to secure development time. Nevertheless, he remains concerned about administrative weaknesses and begins training mid-level members to share responsibility 166 168 170.
Country of the Cauldron and world unification
After the Country of the Cauldron’s founding ceremony, Orochimaru immediately returns to state administration. He later supports Jiraiya’s mission to aid Yahiko’s Akatsuki in Amegakure, judging that an allied government there could advance unification without requiring immediate annexation 256 259 260.
His broader strategy combines infiltration, support for sympathetic ninja, suppression of hostile factions, and efforts to prevent the Five Great Shinobi Villages from uniting. When the daimyo undermine these plans, he orders Miyashi Hizokurou to assassinate them. He later gives the great villages a final opportunity to submit before resorting to force 260 269 270 281 282 283.
Orochimaru prioritizes removing Kumogakure’s Chakra Cannon before the final assault to avoid unnecessary losses. The cannon and its designs are secured, while forces led by Pakura and Ishii take control of Sunagakure and Iwagakure. Unification is achieved, with the formal date set for the end of Konoha’s forty-sixth year 294 300.
Afterward, he works to dissolve old village-based factions, marries Tsunade, and helps combat wicked arts that steal Fortune and destiny. During the final confrontation with the Four Sages, he prepares the country’s cannons and orders uninterrupted bombardment once the Natural Energy ammunition runs out 301 303.
Altered future timeline
In the changed future encountered by Jiraiya, Orochimaru’s unification campaign becomes markedly more destructive. Konoha and the other great villages have been devastated, and the Nether Ninja Village approaches victory through widespread slaughter of ideological opponents. This is an altered timeline, distinct from the main sequence of events 148.
Personality
Orochimaru is inquisitive, analytical, and difficult to befriend. Hyuga Shin appeals to him by challenging assumptions he had previously accepted, while Tsunade is surprised by how quickly the two become close. His curiosity extends beyond acquiring techniques to understanding the systems that govern power, longevity, and fate 10 25 33.
As Nether King, he values talent regardless of its conventional combat standing. He believes every ninja has a useful specialty and identifies candidates for teaching, secretarial work, and medical training. He also respects Tsunade’s independence, consulting her rather than simply ordering her to support a training program 134 175 228.
His concern for his people coexists with ruthlessness. He rewards service, funds pensions, and considers the casualties a mistaken decision could cause, but also orders political purges and assassinations when opponents threaten unification. He is willing to pursue harsh methods while rejecting plans whose risks outweigh their value 223 234 260 270 294.
He is proud without assuming that leadership excuses stagnation. Despite broad support for his rule, he trains to maintain a respectable position among the core members. Administrative overload frustrates him, particularly when powerful colleagues refuse to help, but he accepts carrying more responsibility while cultivating future assistants 166 223.
Abilities & Skills
Impure World Reincarnation
Orochimaru understands the technique’s underlying operation more deeply than Hiruzen Sarutobi 158.
- Revives Kagami Uchiha, Ebizo, Explosion Release Gari, and Heifeng using the village’s cultivated White Zetsu sacrifices 158.
- Those sacrifices allow ordinary Kage-level souls to fight near their living peak; figures such as Hashirama and Madara require better offerings 158.
- Can briefly revive Hyuga Shin as an emergency measure and later summons him when the village’s forces are suffering heavy casualties 158 244.
- Uses reincarnated bodies to locate the interdimensional connection supporting Hiruzen’s technique, enabling its dismantling 158 233.
- Warns that the same disruption is unlikely to work again once the Sage knows what he can do 233.
Anti-Reincarnation Poison
Orochimaru develops poison designed to exhaust the sacrificial life force sustaining an Impure World Reincarnation body 159.
- Tests it against Blue B by delivering a bite through a snake released from his sleeve 159.
- Depleting the sacrifice’s life force causes the reincarnation to unravel 159.
- The effect takes time, giving a sufficiently strong opponent an opportunity to stop it after discovery 159.
- Lists an improved version among the village’s major wartime assets 232.
Ninjutsu and Taijutsu
His repertoire combines Konoha’s secret techniques with the extensive knowledge inherited from Hyuga Shin 123 150.
- Rashomon: Summons a black-and-red, demon-faced gate to intercept a ninjutsu barrage 16.
- Elemental ninjutsu: Uses Water and Wind Release against Hiruzen, and Earth Release to raise himself and his core members above an opposing army 241 244.
- Snake techniques: Deploys attacking snakes, including one whose severed head still delivers its bite 159.
- Independent combat: Defeats Mangetsu’s attempts to pressure him without using snake-related techniques 225.
- Limits: Hiruko’s Sharingan genjutsu causes him considerable difficulty during their spar 225.
Research and Technical Knowledge
Orochimaru possesses broad knowledge of ninjutsu, genjutsu, sealing, swordsmanship, stealth, traps, reconnaissance, and escape methods 150.
- Compiles techniques and medical knowledge into books to strengthen the village’s institutional foundation 150 166.
- Supports Hiruko’s Chimera research as a potential means of improving ninja aptitude 139.
- Establishes a scientific research team that supplies Inoue Hirohiko with a functional prosthetic arm 228.
- Works with Miyashi Hizokurou to trace stolen Fortune and usurped destiny back to practitioners of wicked arts; their initial method is functional but not fully stable 301.
- Finds a method to completely sever his Ryūchi Cave contract after more than a year of research 301.
Persuasion and Psychological Warfare
Orochimaru uses public speaking to build loyalty and undermine enemy morale 154 164.
- Amplifies his voice with ninjutsu so it carries across a battlefield 164.
- Uses elevated terrain to make himself visible and reinforce his authority 241.
- Challenges village propaganda, exposes political wrongdoing, and invites enemy ninja to defect 164 241 243.
- Connects service to recognition, material rewards, and a place in the historical record 154.
