Background / History

The Sage of Six Paths established the Chakra system and embedded fragments of his will within Chakra Seeds, allowing him to influence shinobi minds, actions, memories, and predetermined fates without their awareness. He treats shinobi as both controllable pawns and resources to be harvested for Yin- and Yang-based power. 19 21 185

During the Warring States Period, Hyuga Shin repeatedly interfered with the Sage's intended fate, including the reincarnations of his two sons. The Sage attempted to use Hashirama Senju and Uchiha Madara to eliminate Shin, but Shin survived, sealed his Chakra Seed, and became difficult for the Sage to investigate. 23

The Sage resides primarily in the Pure Land, where his true body is restricted from casually entering the Ninja World. He can instead extend his will through Chakra, possess individuals, send soul projections, or use vessels created from White Zetsu and Otsutsuki-descendant blood. 23 129 186 233

Although he considers himself the architect of the Ninja World's destiny, the Sage was drawn into the Pure Land by the World Will and constrained by its rules. He became one of the Five Great Kings, tasked with maintaining the Pure Land while unknowingly serving as a means for the World Will to harvest the living world. 219

Personality

The Sage is patient, calculating, and intensely controlling. He prefers to operate through hidden influence, carefully constructed “scripts,” and proxies rather than open intervention. 23 67

He becomes openly ruthless when his control is threatened. Faced with the rise of Spark, the Nether Ninja Village, and later the Country of the Cauldron, he escalates from covert manipulation to possession, propaganda, direct military coordination, and personal combat. 89 229 237

His confidence is repeatedly undermined by Hyuga Shin and Taiyi Sage. These setbacks make him increasingly vigilant, frustrated, and unwilling to accept the Ninja World's changing direction. 186 251 279

Abilities & Skills

Will of the Six Paths

The Sage embeds his will in Chakra Seeds and uses Chakra as a medium to influence the Ninja World's inhabitants.

  • Can manipulate thoughts, behavior, and fate through Chakra without immediate detection. 19 21
  • Stronger shinobi are believed to be more susceptible to his influence. 19
  • Can possess or infiltrate targets such as Orochimaru, Tsunade, Nawaki, Minato Namikaze, Madara, and the Senju brothers. 23 121 170 185 231
  • Can gradually erase memories and historical awareness through embedded Chakra influence. 237
  • His will can be detected and removed through divine sense and specialized sealing methods. 21 30

Fate Manipulation

The Sage maintains a predetermined “script” for major figures and events in the Ninja World.

  • Senses deviations from fated outcomes, such as Nawaki surviving. 23
  • Traces altered fate backward to identify the source of interference. 23
  • Previously arranged the conflict between reincarnations connected to his sons and is suspected of orchestrating Indra and Asura's opposition. 23 58
  • His control weakens when key individuals have the Will of the Six Paths removed. 89 217

Chakra and Yin-Yang Release

The Sage possesses vast Chakra reserves and powerful Yin-Yang Release.

  • Condenses a Yin-Yang Release scepter and Truth-Seeking Orbs. 89 224
  • Harvests soul essence in the Pure Land as ultimate Yin Release power while drawing Yang essence from living shinobi. 185
  • Uses the combined Yin-Yang power to maintain peak combat capability without the Otsutsuki clan's reliance on elixirs. 185
  • His incomplete Yin-Yang rules and Truth-Seeking Orbs are countered by Sage Art: Natural Energy. 224
  • Natural Energy cannon fire heavily suppresses and damages his Chakra-based body. 302

Soul and Pure Land Manipulation

As a Pure Land King, the Sage can control souls and access the boundary between the Yin and Yang realms.

  • Summons and recalls souls through the Pure Land, including former Kage and the Senju brothers. 121 185
  • Harvests the souls of powerful Pure Land residents to replenish his strength. 185
  • Can maintain or exploit the connection opened by Impure World Reincarnation. 129 186 231
  • Sent a soul body carrying immense Chakra into the Ninja World to personally oppose Hyuga Shin. 129
  • Cannot freely deploy his true body in the Ninja World while bound by Pure Land rules. 23

Spatial Techniques and Vessels

The Sage possesses limited spatial-rule mastery and can create powerful bodies for use in the Ninja World.

  • Travels or sends clones through space to reach the Five Great Shinobi Villages. 237
  • Created a temporary Otsutsuki body by combining a high-quality White Zetsu vessel with blood and tissues from Otsutsuki descendants. 233
  • This vessel possessed approximately 85–90% of his main body's strength. 233
  • His spatial abilities are less refined than Obito Uchiha's intangibility techniques in direct combat. 302

Combat Ability

The Sage is among the strongest known beings in the setting, though he has suffered decisive defeats against Sage-level opponents.

  • His true body fought Taiyi Sage for over five hours in the Pure Land. 224
  • Used Yin-Yang rules to suppress Taiyi before Taiyi's Time rules reversed the situation. 224
  • Was defeated by Taiyi, suffering shattered Truth-Seeking Orbs, a severed arm, damaged robes, and facial injuries. 224
  • Later gained an advantage over Uchiha Madara before Miyashi Hizokurou joined the battle. 301
  • Was pressured by Madara, Miyashi Hizokurou, and Obito, then severely injured by six Natural Energy Cannon shells. 302

Relationships

  • Hyuga Shin / Taiyi Sage — Primary adversary. Hyuga Shin repeatedly disrupts the Sage's fate manipulation, removes his will from shinobi, and defeats his true body in the Pure Land. 23 89 224
  • Miyashi HizokurouHyuga Shin's clone and a major counter to the Sage in later battles; his Natural Energy cultivation and coordination with Madara suppress the Sage. 301 302
  • Three Great Insect Sages — Long-standing but unstable allies. They helped him establish himself in the Pure Land and preserve the Chakra system, but repeatedly limit their direct support. 89 219 229
  • Uchiha Madara — Formerly manipulated by the Sage; resisted his control for months and later fought him directly after learning the truth. 170 301
  • Orochimaru — Former pawn whose soul space was cleansed of the Will of the Six Paths by Hyuga Shin. The Sage later possesses and influences him again on several occasions. 30 121
  • Hashirama and Tobirama Senju — Controlled and recalled through the Pure Land; their souls are harvested to strengthen the Sage's Yin-Yang Release. 121 185
  • Minato Namikaze — Subjected to escalating mental infiltration until he performs Impure World Reincarnation and reopens the Yin-Yang passage. 221 231
  • Evil God Hirazaki Harukawa — Rival Pure Land King who competes with the Sage for valuable souls and resources. 149 221
  • World Will — The force that lured the Sage into the Pure Land, restricted his future advancement, and turned him into a tool for harvesting the Ninja World. 219

Story Role / Major Arcs

Hidden Controller of the Chakra System

Conflict with Spark Organization

After Hyuga Shin removes the Sage's will from Orochimaru and numerous Spark members, the Sage discovers that Kusagakure has fallen under Spark's control. He seeks limited aid from the Three Great Insect Sages to curb the organization's growth. 30 89

Exposure of the Conspiracy

Struggle Against the Nether Ninja Village

Battle in the Pure Land

Taiyi Sage enters the Pure Land and confronts the Sage's true body. Taiyi's complete Time rules and Natural Energy counter the Sage's Yin-Yang Release, resulting in the Sage's defeat and humiliation. 221 224

Trivia

  • The Sage deliberately obscured his own history because widespread knowledge of his role as the Chakra system's hidden manipulator could expose his schemes. 237
  • He views the Nether Ninja Village's growing influence as a serious threat after initially dismissing it as minor. 229
  • He has never obtained a complete Sage cultivation method from the Three Great Insect Sages, despite being their major collaborator in blocking humanity's path to Sagehood. 221
  • The Sage's greatest strategic weakness is that Hyuga Shin's Natural Energy-based methods, seals, and spatial countermeasures repeatedly prevent him from reclaiming control of his former pawns. 129 186 217
