Background / History

Kakuzu grew up in Takigakure and remembers a happy childhood there, along with people he once wanted to protect at the cost of his life. Born near the end of the Warring States Period, he belonged to the same broad generation as Hyuga Shin and Hashirama Senju, though he was younger than both 11 170.

For his village, Kakuzu dared to attack Hashirama with a kunai and engage him at close range. Hashirama defeated him within a few moves but deliberately spared him. Kakuzu nevertheless regarded surviving a confrontation with the God of Shinobi as a source of pride 11 170.

After being wronged by Takigakure, he stole its forbidden Earth Grudge Fear item and cultivation method, then defected. The village made only symbolic attempts to capture him before abandoning the pursuit. He did not return for decades 170 171.

Earth Grudge Fear extended his life but also restricted his prospects for further improvement. Disillusioned and distrustful after betrayal, he spent decades working alone as a bounty hunter, replacing a lost sense of purpose with earning money. War suited this lifestyle: it supplied fresh hearts and lucrative black-market commissions 11.

Personality

Kakuzu is deeply attached to money and treats wasted time as lost income. His former methods include bounty hunting and robbing wealthy, poorly protected targets, whom he generally releases once paid. Yet his greed is not absolute: after joining Shin, he offers eighty million ryō of his own savings to support the organization 26 43 44.

He is efficient, cautious, and disciplined in carrying out assignments. He questions Hidan’s suitability as a teammate but follows Shin’s orders, checks a new member’s identity even after seeing a genuine communication ring, and insists that Hidan respect their leader. Organizational management is less comfortable for him than fieldwork; decades of solitary living leave him poorly suited to building and administering a growing organization 26 33 57 64.

His restraint has clear limits. Early on, he normally avoids killing people unable to fight back unless they provoke him, and he condemns Hidan’s indiscriminate sacrifices. Later, his loyalty to unification supports a much harsher outlook: he treats those who refuse to become companions as enemies and participates in killing civilians obstructing the invasion, despite first attempting to explain his position 26 137 295.
