Background

Ashiya Doman was an onmyoji of the Heian era and the rival of Abe no Seimei. Their prolonged philosophical disputes centered on humanity’s flaws; after Seimei’s death, Doman’s loneliness became the driving force behind his later plans. He became a monk and adopted the alias Kenjaku. 133

Over a millennium, Kenjaku survived by possessing successive bodies. While occupying Noritoshi Kamo, he conducted the Death Painting experiments: he repeatedly impregnated a woman capable of bearing curse-human hybrids, mixed his blood into the fetuses, and turned her posthumous vengeful spirit into Red Hannya. 53

He later possessed Kaori Itadori after her death and became Itadori Yuji’s biological parent through her body. Yuji’s body was secretly made into the true vessel, Daiten, intended to suppress and ultimately enable Kenjaku’s possession of Sukuna. 53 132

Appearance

Kenjaku’s appearance depends on his current vessel, but a stitched scar across the forehead identifies his possession.

  • In Kaori Itadori’s body, he appeared as a woman wearing sunglasses, with conspicuous forehead stitches. 50
  • When forced out of Kaori’s body, he emerged as a brain with a mouth and escaped independently. 75
  • After possessing Mahito, he reshaped the body into his original appearance: a kind-faced monk in a kasaya. 121
  • His body became emaciated and his hair turned white after Gojo Sawa destroyed his two domains. 95

Personality

Kenjaku is patient, calculating, and ruthlessly pragmatic. He spent a thousand years arranging vessels, cursed objects, experiments, and alliances toward a goal he deliberately kept hidden from most allies. 50 57 132

He treats both allies and vessels as expendable resources. He used Yorozu’s life as a binding vow to modify Sukuna’s tools, planned to consume Mahito for Idle Transfiguration, and openly regarded possessing Haruta Shigemo’s corpse as making use of “waste.” 75 116 120

Despite his confidence, Kenjaku adapts quickly when plans fail. Repeated interference from Gojo Sawa makes him suspicious that his objectives have been anticipated, causing him to abandon the attempt to capture Tengen and instead absorb the Heavenly Pillar. 123

Abilities & Skills

Body Possession

Kenjaku can transfer himself between bodies, inheriting and using the vessel’s techniques.

  • Occupied Kaori Itadori for years and later abandoned her body as a living brain when her self-destruction was contained. 50 75
  • Took Haruta Shigemo’s body after Haruta’s death. 75
  • Possessed Mahito after defeating him, gaining Idle Transfiguration. 121
  • Possessed the severely weakened Sukuna through prior alterations made to Daiten’s vessel. 132
  • His forehead stitches remain visible after possession. 75 121

Cursed Technique: Gravity

Kenjaku can intensify gravity to immobilize and crush targets.

  • Used Super Gravity to hinder Toji Fushiguro’s movements. 69
  • Crushed Mahito into the ground after Mahito’s transformed body pressured him in close combat. 121
  • Used Gravity through Womb Profusion against Kinji Hakari, Takako Uro, and Ryu Ishigori. 123

Blood Manipulation

Kenjaku can create and manipulate blood offensively.

  • Used Piercing Blood against Riko Amanai, though her heat-based technique evaporated it. 69
  • Created blood-serpents with Blood Mandala to crush Mahito’s transfigured humans. 120
  • Used Blood Meteorite to force Toji and Yuta away. 69

Idle Transfiguration

After possessing Mahito, Kenjaku gained Idle Transfiguration, allowing him to reshape flesh and attack the soul.

  • Reshaped his hand into blades, swords, and drills. 121
  • Used soul-targeting attacks against Kinji Hakari. 122
  • Identified the technique as essential to his plan to transform humanity into a new species. 120 133

Reverse Cursed Technique

Kenjaku can rapidly repair severe injuries.

  • Regenerated after Toji and Yuta broke his limbs and repeatedly cut him apart. 69
  • Continued fighting after Gojo Sawa’s sustained assault, relying on Reverse Cursed Technique and his modified body. 75

Domain Expansion: Womb Profusion

An open-barrier domain centered on a towering tree formed from countless screaming faces.

  • Covers an area hundreds of meters wide. 94
  • Can be used alongside Vajra Fallen Hell. 94 95
  • Its Gravity effect overwhelmed Hakari and pressured Uro and Ishigori’s domains. 123

Domain Expansion: Vajra Fallen Hell

A second open-barrier domain manifested as a giant golden, blood-eyed vajra statue.

  • Represents Kenjaku’s second domain, revealed alongside Womb Profusion. 94
  • Its simultaneous activation shocked both allies and enemies. 95
  • Combining both domains severely weakened Kenjaku after Gojo Sawa compressed and threw his own domain through them. 95

Domain Expansion: Pure Land

Kenjaku’s ultimate domain, activated through the Heavenly Pillar to spread his transformation across the world.

  • Uses the Fallen One’s body as a source of cursed energy and the Heavenly Pillar as a transmitter. 133
  • Manifested twenty pairs of hands forming the twenty esoteric Buddhist heavenly deity seals. 133
  • Seeks to convert living beings into Kenjaku’s new species through Idle Transfiguration. 133

Strategic Planning and Cursed-Object Crafting

Kenjaku is an exceptional long-term planner and cursed-object creator.

  • Created Realm-Breaking Vajra Pestles over a century to counter the Six Eyes; each could distort space for one second and teleport its target. 70
  • Modified Sukuna’s cursed tools with Yorozu’s Construction Technique and binding vow to counter Gojo Sawa’s Infinity. 116
  • Gathered clan and imperial bloodlines to awaken the Four Great Vengeful Spirits. 116 118
